Join hosts Michael Ard and Stephen Grenier for a curated panel discussion on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with a focus on intelligence analysis, energy policy, and military activity.
Michael J. Ard is the Program Director and Senior Lecturer for the Master of Science in Intelligence Analysis program. A former CIA analyst and manager, Dr. Ard specialized in Latin American and Middle Eastern issues. Part of his career included three years at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where he served as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for the Western Hemisphere.
Stephen M. Grenier is the Program Director of the Global Security Studies program at Johns Hopkins University. He previously served as the Associate Director for Cadet Leadership Programs at The Citadel and as the Director for Canadian Affairs in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. As a career active duty United States Army Special Forces officer, he worked in 32 countries and completed 11 combat tours.
Craig A. Hart is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University’s Energy Policy & Climate program in Washington, D.C. Craig serves as Executive Director of the Pace Energy and Climate Center at Pace University’s Haub School of Law and is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center. In the utility reform area, Craig advised Uzbekistan in its ongoing energy market and utility reform initiative leading to the restructuring of the state energy company Uzbekneftegaz and advised the country of Georgia’s Ministry of Energy in reforming its state electricity transmission company.
Elizabeth B. Hessami, is a licensed attorney and Faculty Lecturer of International Environmental Policy and Environmental and Natural Resources Security for The Johns Hopkins University. She has served as a Visiting Attorney for the Environmental Law Institute (remote) for nearly a decade researching post-conflict natural resources management specializing in armed conflict and the environment. She is licensed to practice law by the Washington, D.C. and United States Supreme Court Bars.
Professor Hessami has served as a consultant on Afghanistan, natural resources, armed conflict, and peacebuilding. She was appointed in 2019 to serve on the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law and is active in the Specialty Group on Peace, Security, and Conflict.
Ronald “Ron” Marks III is a 38-year veteran of the U.S. national security community. A former CIA official, Ron was a Clandestine Service officer, Special Assistant to the ADCI for Military Affairs, and a Senate Liaison for five DCI’s. He went on to serve on Capitol Hill as Intelligence Council to Senate Majority Leaders Robert Dole and Trent Lott. Appointed a 2021 Visiting Professor of Cyber and Intelligence at George Mason University, Schar School of Policy and Government, Marks designed a unique course devoted to the crucial intersection of national security policy and advancing technology.
