Nice work, sensei! Two more slide tips. Besides blocking, learn to momentarily leave the index finger that's behind the slide on the string(s) if you lift the slide off the string. Avoids an intermittent note from an open string from ruining your nice solo and is another means to achieve tasteful control of note duration. Lastly, keep in mind that the string(s) will get louder as you slide up. No biggie if you're only moving a couple of frets. But move five or more frets and the increase in volume may be an affront to your audience. Solutions include a deft movement of your volume pot, a volume pedal or you can include a compressor in your signal chain (ala Little Feat).

I think you should drag your left hand index to mute strings behind slide. Not just when you lift off. Unmuted, sympathetic vibration of other strings behind the slide, especially with any gain, can ruin a take with excess noise.

Eric, this is an all-time great video. I've played Open D slide since 1975. Badly enough. I never figured out blocking; I just sort of palm muted with left hand, and used fingers behind the slide on right hand as well. So, thanks for that. Also, the idea of licks BEHIND the slide/chord position had never occurred to me! I'm a slow learner. I only found this out recently but while I knew the famous story about Lowell George injuring his finger on a model aeroplane so that Ry Cooder had to do the slide part on Willin', I didn't know that Lowell had permanently injured his hand and was only able to play slide after that, as his fingers couldn't do normal chord positioning. To me, he was the king of slide tone, along with Ryland and Duane.

Yes! I remember covering "Shuffle it All" in my band when I was 15! Marc Ford = one of the all time greats! AAAAAA plus Izzy Stradlin is eternally fascinating to me - one of the most reclusive rock heroes ever!

I’ve tried with slide but I just can’t get along with it so I got into using Open D for more modal, folky style picking, which I love jamming around with. This, however, has given me the impetus to give it another bash coz you’ve nailed it on the technique involved… Top video as always sir, peace ✌️ p.s. I love the fact that you don’t run ads and pander to the bullshit! Bravo sir, bravo…

Is there a particular electric guitar type/style best suited for slide?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Not really! You'll folks use strats, teles, les pauls, and SGs - all the usual suspects - it's all in the technique!

@@EricHaugenGuitar It's hilarious. It's a fly on the wall type mockumentary of him hiring a backing band and going out the road. A must watch for any middle-aged male of modest talent who has ever considered it. He also did an actual tour all in character as David Brent which I went to see. It was very funny. It was on Netflix over here. Don't know if it's available in the States.
