Peter does not mean rock. Peter means 'firstling, that which separates or opens'. Peters original name anyways was Simon which means' heard'. Petra means 'rock'. Many confuse peter with Petra...they are completely different words. Petra will be the place the Jews are takien in the mountains to be protected in the last days. Peter is not the Rock. And Jesus did not call Peter 'the rock'...Jesus was referring to 'himself' as the rock.

The Greek language IS NOT A DEAD language, you can literally ask a Greek friend to translate Petros. It is a universal truth that Petros (Πέτρος) is the masculine of Petra (πέτρα). The Greek names of males or masculine words end with "ος" and female names or feminine words end with "α" for example: Petros (Πέτρος), Petra (Πέτρα) Alexios (Αλέξιος), Alexia (Αλεξία) Aurelios (Αυρήλιος), Aurelia (Αυρελια) Leontios (Λεόντιος), Leontia (Λεοντια) Anastasios (Αναστάσιος), Anastasia (Αναστασία) Maximos (Μάξιμος), Maxima (Μάξιμα) Artemos (Άρτεμος), Artema (Αρτεμα) Augustos (Αύγουστος), Augusta (Αυγούστα) Demetrios (Δημήτριος), Demitria (Δήμητρα) Jesus Christ did not give Simon a Greek nickname! Jesus gave him an Aramaic nickname! John 1:42 "...."You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas." When you translate Cephas to Greek, the literal translation is Petra ("πέτρα") which means STONE, but because Simon is a male, the translator cannot give him a name ending with "α" because that is feminine in Greek. The translator has to give him a male name by putting "ος" at the end, thus, the male name becomes Petros ("Πέτρος), which means "Male of stone" or "Masculine of stone" or "man stone" or "macho stone" or any description that makes it clear that Simon is a male! The literal translation of Matthew 16:18 reads: "And I tell you, you are "masculine of stone", and on this stone I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it." That is why the catholic church is teaching the truth, because Matthew 16:18 literally translates to: "And I tell you, you are "masculine of stone", and on this stone I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it." Also, the Greek "Petra" and "Petros" is used in our daily life, for example: Petrify derives from the Greek word Petra which means stone and the Latin suffix "-ify" which means "to become," thus, Petrify means to become stone. The word "Petrology" is composed of two Greek words: πέτρος Petros, [rock] and λόγος, lógos [study]. Thus, the word "Petrology" is the study of rocks! Petrology is a branch of geology and the scientific name was invented without a religious bias and by simply using the Greek language. The word "petroleum" comes from the Greek word: πέτρος Petros, [rock] and the Latin word Oleum which means oil. That is why Petroleum is literally translated as "Stone Oil" because petroleum is oil that has been derived from stone (animals that have been petrified over millions of years.) All of this has nothing to do with religion, it is science that is using Greek words to name new discoveries such as petroleum. The English word "Petrosus" which means ROCKY or STONY is directly derived from the Greek word "Petros." Stop teaching lies that are contrary to the Greek language and contrary to biblical scripture. There is a saying in science that goes like this: "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence!" Show us the evidence that says that Petros is a small stone? That Petros is a pebble? etc.. You are like a parrot that hears someone talk and repeats the same thing without investigating first the claim. The Greek language IS NOT A DEAD LANGUAGE! There is this country called Greece which is in Europe and they speak Greek! Make a friend and ask him to translate Petros for you. And if you don't have the time for that, GOOGLE HAS A TRANSLATOR: Pebble = πετραδάκι small stone = μικρή πέτρα tiny stone = μικροσκοπική πέτρα The false doctrine that someone taught you and that you repeat like a parrot is all lies! CHECKMATE! I don't blame you, you are an ignorant (not an insult), you ignore the truth! The truth is that PETROS is just the masculine form of PETRA. And that Petros is the Petra where Jesus will build his church! AMEN

Why don’t you follow the Church in which Christ church was built on? He was the guy in this verse Matthew 16:18-19 (RSV2CE): And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. ‡ 19 ¶ I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,§ and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
