It's tree poaching - the whole "anonymous text" is just to cover them if they get caught. Pecan wood has extremely high value on the market right now. Pay attention to how carefully the first tree was cut-down... It was logged. Trees do get stolen. Forestry crimes, especially urban/suburban forestry crimes, are the least widely known about agricultural crimes and forms of theft - something that would even leave most local Law Enforcement scratching their heads over. The tree removal needs to get reported to their local Natural Resources Officer.

We had a similar thing happen to us. Came home one day and saw a big red X spray painted on our oak tree in the front yard. We didn't think much of it because it looked like the process that happens when the county is going to remove a tree for whatever reason and we didn't particularly like the tree anyway. A few days later we came home and the tree was gone. One thing we did notice was that the elm tree right next to it was still standing and that tree was half dead. So we called the county people about removing that one too and they told us they didn't do that because out where we live, it was considered our property all the way to the road and we'd have to make arrangements with a tree company to remove it. When we questioned them about the oak tree being mysteriously removed, they didn't know anything about it. All we can figure is that oak is an expensive wood (elm is not) so somebody probably wanted it for the wood.

One tree can easily produce at minimum 50 to 150 pounds per harvest. Each year that tree would yield $683 minimum; over 50 years that's $34,150 minimum in pecans. Or... It's a scam that preys upon unsuspecting contractors. Often involving homes that are listed for sale, but look vacant. The scammer will request work over the internet, such as: exterior painting, landscaping, driveway, etc, and pay with a check. The scammers often set the price by saying, "would $18,000 be enough to cover the painting?" All this communication is either happening by phone, or through digital means. Usually whatever price the scammer says, will be attractive enough for the contractor to want the project. Then the scammers, who say they're out of town, will have someone drop off a check, but it'll be for more than the agreed upon amount. @@lenitaa7938 In many States, you also cease to own whatever parts of your plants grow across your property line, and the adjacent property owners have every legal right to trim anything within their property without notice to anyone else. Meaning they can legally trim your tree back. Their only legal limitation is that they cannot trim anything to an extent or in a manner that would cause permanent damage resulting in disease or death to your plant. The law recognizes that you can only own nature when nature is completely immovable and anchored and that you cease to own said nature if it moves to someone else's property. This is why you can't own wild animals or the actual water that flows over the ground or the sky above you. And at a certain depth, you may not even actually own the earth under your land or the minerals contained therein.

Actually it has happened more than once. One time I actually went out and looked at one of those jobs and nobody was there but there actually was a realtor sign. I called the number on it and the person who answered confirmed my suspicions that the job request was almost certainly fraudulent. I don't know what the motivations are for this kind of scam. I always try to meet with the owners on the site to fully evaluate all the work in the yard including issues the owner hasn't spotted yet and I do those evaluations for free so when the owner doesn't want to meet I consider that a big red flag.

Most arborists and tree removal services are legally obligated to have the homeowner, or someone who has legal permission to speak on their behalf on site as they do the work in my state. Provided that the tree being removed is near a dwelling anyway. The power company has the right to trim/remove any tree interfering with their lines though. I think the county also has the power to deem trees dangerous and have them removed if they are a risk to pedestrians and traffic. It is strange that two pecan trees would be removed from private property though. I know that the wood of pecans is quite valuable so perhaps it was theft.

It doesn't matter if the tree cutters were faked into it or not. It was still tree poaching. They should be bonded and insured and they, the tree cutting company, owes you a replacement of the same age/value. Which is a LOT more than people think. A Pecan that age, maybe what, 50-60K USD at least? This is most likely an actual crime though, Tree Poaching. But it still doesn't matter if it was or not as far as the company liability. The company is liable, they will pay up, or take them to court, but you might want the police to investigate for tree poaching. The cutters owe the family a tree of equal age, size, and type. The reason tree poaching is highly likely is they didn't pick the older tree that has external flaws visible plus is too large to easily cut and run.

This sounds like a scam I have been hearing about that's pretty old. The fact that other people have come out to cut down the other tree is proof of that. I have heard this is common with roofing jobs as well. The scammer contacts several contractors to do work and gives a bad check outright for over the cost of the work along with the address and whatever else they can come up with on public records like listing for a house to make it seem like they are the owner. They then contact them saying they overpaid and want the extra money to be paid back and the work done to some random person's home. The contractor if smart realizes they were lied to and doesn't do any work.... or in this case would do the work and then think the check was real and pays the scammer money back. The scammer disappears with the contractors money and now leaves the contractor scammed for services rendered, stolen money, and the unwitting homeowner is bombarded with unwanted work and sometimes it gets done when they are away and are left with destroyed property.

It would depend on the equipment and the type of labor involved, could they just FELL it, or would they have to first trim the upper boughs/limbs due to the confined space? Could one of those machines that raises a worker in a "buckety" be used, or would a work have to literally climb and rope himself to the upper parts of the tree to first drop large boughs so they fall in a direct, controlled, targeted fashion so as not to hit that house or adjacent one (they appear close?)
