This song is so beautiful. For me I think its about wanting what you can't have.

*I've never had any drug, or alcohol problems, but I've struggled with mental illness for most of my life, and this song just reminds me very much of being committed to a psychiatric ward. Antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers tend to make me feel very complacent, like a zombie. It's a very beautiful song!*

I'm only a couple of minutes in, but I'm noticing how well-timed the on-screen lyrics are. Most lyrics videos I see change a bit too early or a bit too late, this is refreshingly spot on!

Thank you for watching! What A Perfect Circle song/album is your favorite?

At current, this album is my favorite. I'm very very new to Maynard's "other" bands (I'm sure he doesn't appreciate when people assign hierarchy to the bands he's in, but you know what I mean). A buddy I met who's a regular at my bar re-introduced me to Tool and showed me a few Puscifer and APC songs (he'd often request that I played them over the bar's speakers when we had the right crowd) and I took a nose-dive into All Things Maynard. I started with certain songs rather than full albums, because the ADHD that caused me to hyperfixate on MJ music (hellooo endless fountain of dopamine!) is the same ADHD that tends to not let me stay on one album very long, but most of the APC songs I learned front to back were off this album. I won't get into the details, but a few of them hit kind of close to my heart in a few different ways, and I finally listened to this one front to back and was even more in awe than I had been. (Funny enough, this was around the time you posted this video.) Then a little over two weeks ago my cousin, a fellow "black sheep" in my family, died of a heroin overdose. The next time one of Thirteenth Step's songs came up on my playlist, I wondered if I'd be able to handle listening to anything from the album. On the drive to my hometown before the funeral, I listened to this one top to bottom again. From my grandfather's house to the funeral home, I listened to The Noose, The Outsider, and Blue. Leaving the funeral (especially given what I observed within and about my family during the service) I re-listened to The Noose and The Outsider. And on my way back home, I played the album through again (had to start with Aenima upon my departure from my family, though 😉). All of that to say, it's extremely difficult to choose any favorites. Many of MJ's songs give me the sensation of him expressing things that I should be feeling but can't. But for right now, this whole album takes up a huge section of my Replays List. Now that I've written this novel, I'm going to hit play again and actually listen to your commentary on this particular song ;)

I interpret the apples line as: once apples fall from the tree they start to die. They lose their life source and slowly begin to rot. They were in his eyes being nurtured and growing but now he is losing energy and life.

I really like that interpretation! Probably closer to the true meaning than what I said. Thank you for watching and commenting.

This is one of my favorite songs, just the melody and you can really hear Maynard's voice and tone which is very nice. I agree with the perspective of a person in recovery... the album cover has the 13th step on it. I went to a 12 step program and always heard of the 13th step being the one where people date other members in the program, and it never works out because they are in recovery and not thru the program yet.... so sponsors always tell their newbys not to date members of the program because it causes other issues and might make them go back to using/drinking. I think that's why I like the song too because, ya, I can relate to going to a program of recovery from drinking and love hearing music by others who have been through it. I like the Maynard quotes you added too! I never saw those or heard of another artist who did this song first. I'll have to look that up! Thanks for reviewing this song!

Thank you for the suggestion and the comments, this really was one if my favorite videos to make so far. I did have the true meaning to the 13th step as well-* The act of “13th Stepping” is when a more experienced member of a 12th step group - man or woman - pursues a romantic relationship with a new group member. In early recovery, new members of a 12-Step group should always look for and use the strongest foothold to remain sober. Needless to say, the 13th Step rarely offers that stable footing. * but decided to save that for The Package Lyric Reaction, if you haven't heard that one yet, give it a listen. The opening and closing of say hello to the rugs topography, I've liked to think of it as the first hello as either a flash forward to the latter Hello or a scene where they, like you said, in rehab zoning out near a rug, or possibly this is before they were in rehab. The last Hello, maybe they kidnapped the nurse and have been apprehended and are face down near a rug again, staring at it. It's a nice song.

Thank you so much Twitty! I'm glad to hear you overcame addiction, keep it up! I'm torn between this and Mer De Noms as my favorite, but this one definitely has more personal meaning to me.

@@DestructiveMediaYT I'm so sorry, I totally jumped the gun and noticed after I made that comment😂! I thought for a long time that the APC version was just the song, and then I fell head first into Failure's music after discovering it was a cover. Love both versions! I enjoyed your video👍

Thanks for watching! I also found out about this being a cover when I made this video, and also love the original version now and a few of Failure's other songs. Atom City Queen by Failure has really growing on me the last week or so.

13th Step just barely edges out Mer De Noms. For me....... But those two albums are top notch
