As a Canadian, it was very interesting to watch someone who doesn't know the context of the street/place names! Atlantic Canada is generally the Maritime provinces. The Algonquin are a Canadian First Nations people, and the Red River is a river in Manitoba but also refers to the Red River Settlement of Métis people (another aboriginal group - for non-Canadians). "Thunder Bay is near Toronto" was hilarious, and the French in Quebec immediately jumped out. We also tend to have both English and French on many things, including school buses. "RGE" is Range Road, not Ridge Road. The "marks" on the road are actually filled-in cracks caused by the cold weather. When you asked if Peace River was a place, I actually shouted "Yes!" out loud - it is where some of my family is from, my dad actually grew up right in that area by Peace River on a farm. And as many people have mentioned, we have 10 provinces and 3 territories, NOT states! Hope that my little notes were interesting :)

Great vid. A little tip for Canada: if you ever see a sign for "The Beer Store" or the "LCBO", you are in Ontario. Both are Ontario government-owned alcohol stores. You can buy alcohol in grocery stores or whatever, but there are no dedicated liquor stores in the province except The Beer Store and LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario). Both stores are very likely to be in most Ontario cities (even fairly small ones) so it is a good thing to look out for in Canada.

If you see french-only road signs, you are automatically in Québec. If it's in both english and french, it's usually because you are in a city bordering Québec, like Ottawa. Tip on road numbers in Quebec: Odd numbered roads generally run perpendicular to the river (St-Lawrence / St-Laurent), so roughly north-south, and the numbers increase the more you go east. Even numbered roads run parallel to the river, so east-west, and increase as you go north. So, finding a particular intersection of main roads in Quebec is really easy. Anyone who has had to travel around Quebec in the pre-GPS days knows that system to locate yourself on a paper map. It's a super smart and useful system. There are other rules that are a bit less useful for geo-guessing. Like numbers below 100 are highways. 100 roads are main country roads. 200 are slightly smaller main country roads (e.g., that go through towns, at lower speed limits). And higher numbers (300, 400, 500, 600, ..) are usually a branch of a highway with the same lower numbers (e.g., the 440 would be an auxiliary branch of highway 40, in this particular case, the 440 is a section of highway within the city of Quebec that merges with highway 40 once you get out of the downtown area).

"Algonquin" is an entire family of Native American languages, stretching along the Atlantic from North Carolina to Labrador and from there west to Alberta. A major subgroup is "Anishnaabe" which is the major languages of Quebec and Ontario like Ojibwa and Cree. Anishnaabe languages provide common material for US and Canadian place names, including the river name "Mississippi". The last part of that is "river", as in, for instance, the town "Chisasibi" at the northernmost roadhead in Quebec on James Bay.

I thought it might be based on some capitalism loving founders but no, apparently... (from Wiki): "The place name comes from the 18th century Acadian L'Économie, an adaptation of the Mi'kmaq First Nation word for the location, kenomee, meaning 'a place of land jutting into the sea'. Mi'kmaqs presumably named the area thus because the shoreline juts out into the Minas Basin at what is now known as Economy Point. East of this point marks the beginning of Cobequid Bay. Mi'kmaqs hunted and gathered throughout the region for thousands of years prior to the settlement of Acadian families in the Economy area."

They still have Zellers there? They got rid of them in Alberta years ago and replaced them with Target, but then Target left so there was just nothing to replace it for a while. I think Safeway has stepped in to fill the void, mostly.

Great job studying your Canadian place names, you found Thunder Bay, Moncton, and even Peace River right off the bat! If only you had learned the Provincial (not state!) Highway logos, you would have been sure about being in Ontario and in Québec. Though the NB one did save you thankfully from being mislead by the Maritime Ontario sign.

As someone from Atlantic Canada, you spawned in that first one and I instantly was like "that looks like home!" Sure enough that's it. Wow this was really strange to watch. I am used to you knowing way more about these games than I do. But seeing you miss what to me is an obvious clue was really a weird experience. Also, for the fourth one- the bit that confused you where you saw "Ontario".. its a transport truck and it says "Maritime-Ontario", as in it covers those two regions (Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI). Totally understand why that was confusing though.

I play Canada all of the time, fastest time for a perfect score is about 11 mins 47 seconds. First step is to look for provincial indicators. Infrastructure varies in some provinces, license plates are required on the back in others. Quebec is french, NB is bilingual. There are coves on the east coast, and mountainous areas on the west. If its flat, its in the middle. Good job.

Any time you see a small sign with a place name like Germantown, it's what we call a Hamlet and could just be a small place with a few homes or a small community. They were settlements. Over time, they can get absorbed into larger cities or municipalities, but they will keep the name as much as they can.
