I think once people accepted that wrestling was just "sports entertainment", people embraced it. Today people watch wrestling not because they want to see a legit NCAA or Olympic style wrestling match, but because they want to see a show with story lines. They want to see the wrestlers pull off incredible moves and see the opponent take the move safely and live to fight another day. It's all about the wow factor, it's all about getting the most bang for your buck while at the same time still being able to support what you see because you know at the end of the day it's still scripted and no one is out to legitimately hurt anyone. It's about embracing fantasy while also acknowledging that the performers in the ring are highly skilled at what they do. Now wrestlers do get hurt because of the athletic and physical nature of wrestling and when it happens you can see the concern on the fans' faces, no one ever roots for a wrestler to get hurt or wants to see it happen. In the end every one knows it was an accident, it wasn't caused by the opponent wanting to deliberately injure the opponent.

Lou was 100% right about Harley though. I've never enjoyed a Harley match. I think the boys loved him more than the fans.

Strangler Lewis did. And it's a valid point. Because now with AEW they have crossed the line where they are hurting the business with their BS. The business would be in a better place had they not gone much past Race's days in terms of stretching believability.

While the theme is correct, so was Lou. Relative to what was happening with in wrestling Lou’s day Harley’s as cartoony. However Harley still looks legit in comparison to anything post 2011

This is a great example with sports in general, actually just about everything, music, media, etc. but i personally see it all the time being a big nba fan. 90s-early 2000s nba players always saying current nba players aint shit, are soft, wouldnt last a second in their world. Its all silly. If youre a great, youre a great.
@artirony410

I mean with a legitimate sport like the NBA these arguments from old players are just foolish because we have actual data that shows new players are just objectively better than them by multiple metrics.

There are both positives and negatives about any era. My problem is with people acting like this era is perfect, when in fact it isn't. We could talk about the pointless 20 minute matches where you already know who's gonna win or the main events with little to no stakes, or main events on Raw or Dynamite or any other show where it just ends with no cliffhanger or anythinng to make you go watch next week... but for example, many storylines from the last 3-4 years are really much better than some from even the ruthless aggression era. They should mix them all and make the "perfect" product. That being said I still love watching WWE and AEW PPVS.

Yeah, but like this isn’t what it used to be anymore we did something good with that era now we’re doing something different but what are you saying? Are you saying that maybe the new era of WWE or Pro wrestling? Is it like what it was back in the early 2000s or are you saying that like even though there are some things that are perfect, but there are some other storylines that are not if you’re saying that what makes you not interested like you were

Yeah but there IS a line. We all know its entertainment, but movies still have to be believable within the universe where they take place. There is no reason to not ATTEMPT to make the audience suspend disbelief. Otherwise, you're just doing gymnastics exhibitions or hitting each other with chairs for no reason

Except that line doesn't separate realistic and unrealistic (because if you look at it honestly, pro wrestling hasn't been realistic since at least the 60s), but between "unrealistic I accept" and "unrealistic I don't accept". Thing is, everybody puts that line in a different place.

But there is a caveat in there in that there are times where things have gotten so cartoony, phony, over the top, however one wants to say it. While wrestling changes in the variety of moves wrestlers do, at its core wrestling doesn’t and shouldn’t change.

It's almost like EVERY older generation in _every_ field doesnt want to stay up to date with changes and thus treats those changes as a problem caused by the next generation. People used to complain that, "kids these days, with their paper and pencils! None of them know how to properly wipe a slate with a rag" Before, students used slate and chalk.
