When I was in my late 20s I realised that just because a film/ TV show has the same name as another film / TV show, plus a "2" and a subtitle, that doesn't mean it is a legitimate sequal. Rings of Power is not canon. Nor is any "Star Wars" product that Disney has made.
That's how I see it too. I've outright ignored the more recent LotR and Star Wars stuff and treat everything older as more worth my time, money and interest.

The main reason why we hate Girl Bosses is actually pretty simple: They're not likable! The longer explanation is that Girl Bosses are a form of vindication and the need for praise for simply being a woman overpowering males. But it goes deeper than that, they want us to buy into it. They want us to believe that they're perfect and can do no wrong, that they are deserving to do anything they want to do because of how they feel. There's no humility or character development to help make them likable, because the way they are right now is the way how they're going to be till the end.

Exactly. what is impressive is the huge lack of knowledge the writers have about the characters. I would forgive it if they at least wrote them accordingly with Peter Jackson's trilogy (They were perfectly written for movies that had to tell such a huge story lore wise.) Yet they simply ruin important characters that have a huge legacy. Galadriel is one of the eldest Elves in the whole story, instead she is written like a 20 yo college girl. Elrond who is from a great line of Elves and is known for his wisdom is written as a sceptic antagonistic dude that shouldn't have a thing to say to Galadriel. Sauron an angelic being of great might is simply killed by an orc in the most simplistic and pathetic way. Isildur who is known as a great warrior is reduced to some child that knows nothing of the world. It is frustrating. Never would Galadriel rush recklessly into anything, never would she ignore Elrond's concerns. Never would prime Sauron get outsmarted by an orc, nor would he ever need to be crowned/accepted by orcs. His might alone would grant him such an influence over the mind of these lesser beings. The show is written by people who are trying to transpose todays society into a magnificent story. Galadriel is the 20 yo woman, that needs to free herself from the shackles of the patriarchy and experiment the world by her rules. Elrond is the lesser knowledgeable male, that has no say in what is right or wrong. Sauron is the dumb and evil being that needs a powerful woman at his side to achieve his goal. It needs to stop...

Frankly, I couldn't care less about 'wokeism' or 'simping' or 'moody teenager' characters' or whatever. I'm not even going to watch season 2. Season 1 was bad enough.

Is it just me or does the insistence on hiring as many foreign origin actors as possible make all these modern shows just look like a school play? I have literally no issue at all if Mica from Jamaica wants to play a medieval English Queen at the school play, even the town theatre. When someone is supposed to be a permanent visual piece of art and they completely undermine having realistic depictions of ethnic groups it makes what should be high art into basically a village pantomime that somebody recorded. House Of The Dragon managed to avoid the effect for the most part, though King's Landing having the demographics of London did break the suspension of disbelief quite often. These cinematic creations are supposed to be like windows into another world, but if you've got a group of medieval european knights and it's people from all over the world, the illusion is completely snapped and it's like watching a reenactment group on youtube or something.

@The-Yellow-Man2 ай бұрын
Can we talk a little more about the part where they steal the “nameless things in the deep places of the world” bit? Like seriously they couldn’t help themselves. The “Nameless Things” briefly mentioned by Gandalf is one of the most fascinating things about LoTR and has inspired no end of speculation and discussion between fans. It did this BECAUSE there is simply no answer to be had. The mere suggestion that there are things down there bad enough to scare a Balrog, that these things terrify even GODDAMNED SAURON….was enough to give me chills when I was younger. The thing that makes it so interesting is that we have never had, and never needed an answer. It’s almost Lovecraftian in that sense. It is an unspeakable and unknowable terror we can only imagine, and pray we never experience. But for Rings of Power…..it’s a big slug worm thing that is easily dispatched by one Elf in order to make a joke.

He is absolutely spot on with every aspect of the review and couldn't agree more myself being raised in the 80s and seeing the decline of great movies. Anyway... we still have the books and Peter Jackson, who made the closest concept of Tolkiens' world.

I will just say it...the barrow wights shouldn't even exist at this point. In fact, their origin dates to the fall of Arnor, when the Witch king sent evil spirits from Angmar to inhabit the Barrow-downs. THAT is how they were created, so they shouldn't even be here, Arnor does not exist yet, the Witch king doesn't exist yet. And freaking Tom Bombadil lives in the Old Forest, which is very close to the Shire, not in Rhun for whiskey's sake. At this rate we might as well wake the Balrog sooner, so at least some of these knock off characters get killed off...

It's universally bad. Even a single scene - the fight at the end. Gal has five arrows. Fires four. Has five arrows when captured. It's a small thing, but emblematic. The showrunners either can't count or don't care to. Emptying her quiver could have pushed her to take more rash actions, thus leading to her capture. A single fight scene can use the three-act structure to give depth and meaning and stakes.

Thing is, I am exactly the kind of person that would have been a devoted follower of this series: Read the books in the 70s and 80s and loved the Peter Jackson films. When I heard Amazon was ready to pony up the bucks for a series, I thought "great!" The first season was weak in so many ways, but I was ready to let them learn and was open to a second season. Seems they haven't learned at all and this "easy fan" has no desire whatsoever to log into Amazon to watch this. Once again, thank you for your highly entertaining, insightful, and (dammit) FUN reviews.

The best thing I can say about this show is that a luxury cinema put on the Extended Editions of LOTR on Tuesdays as a promotion/cash-in for this season’s release. 3 evenings of viewing pleasure the like of which I have not experienced in a long time (although the complimentary popcorn and wine probably helped). A pity I’ll not find even a thimbleful of that joy in this show.
