Virginia City in Nevada was once called the richest city in America after the discovery of the Comstock Lode led to a silver mining boom in the area. Over 150 years later, much of the town remains the same, though parts of it are in dire need of restoration and preservation, like the Donovan Mill.
Some might say the wealth created on the Comstock would have never existed had the Donovan Mill not be operational. Others say it was the invention of using cyanide to accelerate gold and silver from ore that created a booming mining industry. We believe it was a happy marriage of both that was created in Northern Nevada. The Comstock Foundation of History & Culture believes the next stage for the Donovan Mill is keeping it in existence. But the work to restore the Mill is reminiscent of its original days in the 1890's. The work is backbreaking, dirty, dangerous, and totally worth it!
