A Pipe Cabinet for a Hobbit Farmer

A few months ago I made a pipe that I thought would suit a simple Hobbit farmer. Well, that pipe made it's way back to me and I decided that I needed to make a cabinet as a place to store it along with a long stem pipe my daughters gave me for Christmas years ago. I borrowed some Greene and Greene design elements, such as the cloud lift, as I feel that has a "Hobbit" feel and I wanted it to look like it could be at home in Bag End. I wonder if Tolkien would agree.
Pipe Build - • A "Hobbit Farmer" Pipe...
The wood for this project came from a board that I salvaged at a demolition site. I'm amazed at the quality of lumber that was used in construction nearly 100 years ago. Today it would be very expensive CVG Douglas Fir.

@@StanCrafted no worries mate it was a beautiful build the accuracy was spot on and if that's one thing I have learnt aim to be as accurate as possible and everything is so much easier down the line of a build. I particularly liked the square dowels I will be using this technique. What was the little tool you used to square up the dowle hole? Cheers Karl
@StanCrafted
@StanCrafted 4 жыл бұрын
@@karlpopewoodcraft You are spot on with the accuracy up front leads to quality builds down the line comment. When doing square plugs that are less than a quarter of an inch I've had success just using square steel stock to make the opening. I grind the end a little bit to get it started easier and then just tap it in. For this cabinet the plugs and the steel were 3/16 of an inch.

I had to skip through this video due to time limits, but I intend to watch it through again later. Fantastic cabinet Stan 😊 The grain orientation is so good and really adds to the beauty. I have a lot of reclaimed wood that I recently removed from a friends warehouse. A lot of shelves. He was going to destroy it all and gave me have the chance to take it apart and even transported it for me. I will try and make the most of it all. Especially after seeing this video 😊 ॐ

Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply. I got the wood for this build from my old school building when it was demolished. Unfortunately, much of the valuable wood was still in the building when they tore it down. I can't wait to see what you come up with for projects with the wood that you got.

You got a LOT of usable lumber from that one beam! Is the entire cabinet made from that single piece? And is there a cool story behind it, like it came from Grandpa's barn, or salvaged from the demolition of the old library?
@StanCrafted
@StanCrafted 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. I got everything but the top from that one piece of old 2x6. The wood came out of the old school building that I used to work in. When it was being demolished I asked if I could salvage some wood. Repeatedly I was told no by our school officials. Finally, I called the demolition company and asked them...they agreed as long as I didn't hold them liable if I were injured. I got quite a bit of wood...but only had one night to get it. A friend and I got as much as we could, but it was only a fraction. Mostly it was clear vertical grain Doug Fir like this. I only have a couple of boards left. Trying to save them for special projects. Thanks for stopping by.
