Jean Lafitte is the most important pirate that you've (probably) never heard of!
Join me today as I recount the story of the Pirate Jean Lafitte who maneuvered his way into helping Andrew Jackson defeat the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Why did he do it? The answer will surprise you!
During my trip to New Orleans I felt like I was drawing inspiration from the air as I walked around. This week I will be sharing some of the stories I picked up along the way, and giving out some writing tips while I do it. Thanks for watching!

I just found you. First, your storytelling reminds me of my late brother's. It's wonderful. Second: I can second your statement about NOLA and inspiration. My husband and I spent a lot of time down there in the 1990s and it is a wonderful place. I have 2 of your subjects in my own novel series. It is a vampire series (oh yeah...so many, but...) and I started it in 1900 in Storyville, where jazz was born and ladies of the night could be entertaining. The first 3 chapters of the first book is set in that time. I did all the historical research (my degree is history) and everyone in those chapters, with the exception of Lilly (protagonist) and Marcus (her maker) and the bouncer for Mahogany Hall, everyone is real, in that time and place, doing those jobs. From the Madam of Mahogany Hall, Lulu White to the other madams, the mayor and city council, all the prostitutes, the priest, undertaker, and the police. I used a thesis of policing in that time that was in the Tulane library. The names of the girls in Mahogany Hall were from the 1900 census records. The City Directory gave the rest, along with some information from Al Rose's Storyville, New Orleans: Being an Authentic, Illustrated Account of the Notorious Red Light District. I also have, later in book 1, a ghost story from what used to be O'Flaherty's Irish Channel Pub at 508 Toulouse St. Oh, and did you know that Jean Lafitte's death and burial aren't known, there is some speculation but nothing for sure. I know where he is. He's making movies in Hollywood most of the time, but has gone from Houston to Russia with a group of vampires. He's one as well. :) That's a great story and I've been to the places you mentioned. NOLA is such a wonderful town.

Good story, bro. The precursor to the US Coast Guard was the Revenue Marines or Revenue Cutter Service - established 1790. They cruised the Gulf of Mexico beginning in the early 19th C. The Louisiana was stationed at New Orleans in 1819. Check out the capture of the Bravo.
