What i did was bought two heat sinks for it and placed it on either side with a high quality thermal pad. TOTALLY did t he trick, Made it bulky but found heat sinks for both in black and silver to match the drives. I conveniently had a PERFECT case for them, I think it was a GO-PRO square case, and it fits them perfectly. SO, I do know what you're talking about.

I was considering this little enclosure but after i saw that write speeds were capped out at 1gbps I decided to go with a different option. I needed a case because i plan on transferring data from another external M.2 drive, just a little over 1TB of data. Considering both M.2 drives are pcie gen 4.0 with a read speed around 5,000 mbps and write of 3,000 mbps this enclosure would kind of cripple it's performance. It will be interesting though to see how fast the total file transfer takes since yesterday I backed up about 3TB of data from an SSD to an external HDD and it took almost 10hrs to transfer everything.

Contrary to popular belief, SSDs perform better and last longer in higher temps than lower temps as NAND is very similar to battery cells which degrade in cooler temps. Your standard metal sticker M.2s come with are efficient enough to prevent the PCB getting damaged

sheesh so the (PCIE 4.0)gen 4 tends to get hotter than (PCIE 3.0)gen 3 will the gen 4 last longer than gen 3?
@betablockrr
@betablockrr Жыл бұрын
@demon6937 I think overall it will be the same longevity as NAND technology has really advanced over the years and most brands can outlive a HDD. But it's higher shouldn't throttle speed, you only need to worry about protecting the PCB and surrounding motherboard which the stickers on M.2, or the thin metal cover some come with, or laptops metal holder is sufficient enough to do
@demon6937
@demon6937 Жыл бұрын
@@betablockrr another question would the 10gbps ssd enclosure enough for storage purposes? I've seen 20gbps and 40gbps(thunderbolt) but the enclosure tends to be more expensive.
@betablockrr
@betablockrr Жыл бұрын
@demon6937 10Gbps would be perfectly fine, even SATA SSD at 6Gbps is still pretty fast and for most uses like games, updates and file transfer you won't notice much difference unless your transferring 100GB at a time. Also just letting you know that thunderbolt enclosures will say 40Gbps but thunderbolt limits it to 20-22Gbps as it reserves the rest for video signaling

@bipbop3121
@bipbop3121 Жыл бұрын
Taki said he has had overheating with other external enclosures. Maybe he moves more data, especially if test related. It's not how often you use it, but how much data you move when you do. Someone infrequently, might actually be moving more games, than the person who is frequently moving only one or two around. Kind of like when people get a new phone and they're loading it up with all their apps, their new phone gets hot and they forgot how hot their old phone alkali was, when new doing the big load. I think the less frequent someone does it, the more games they will have completed or tired of and the more they'll want to load up.

The perforated plate by the fan makes it kinda stupid. It will seriously restrict the inflow of air. I like the product and if I ever get it might just properly open up the inlet. On the comment about the fan speed: these simple devices often only have one speed, as they're just plugged to a constant voltage pin (look at lot of raspberry pi fans that you can either plug to 3V or 5V on the GPIO pins). This might not be the case here, though.

bro it takes thousands of writes to kill an SSD, just use it as hard as you want. I've used one now that has thousands of writes, it's full, it's beginning to degrade but barely and the thing is a decade old. Just use your SSD, new tech will exist, make it easier to save files, and outclass it by several times before you get remotely close to killing the drive.
@Ruby_Mochii
@Ruby_Mochii Жыл бұрын
@@escapetherace1943 I'm talking about transferring 100s of GB of games constantly like a few times a day, I doubt people does that but, it would literally just eat DWPD and its not guaranteed to work over that. Best case scenario is just not to transfer every so often, if not at all would be even better. It's a storage medium It's best used/read as it is than constantly transferring, also It's inconvenient. Newer drives also has less write cycles than previous gens so ymmv It also might be better if you get a much bigger capacity as a full SSD wears out much quicker than it is over 75ish% if you have a lot of big capacity games or a lot of them. 2tb 2230 nvme ssds might not be enough for people these days and I don't think there's any bigger ones.
