I am not a senior but a middle aged person, and still struggle with all the technology. I have more in common with my parents than the new generation. Every new generation coming from now on will keep getting outdated faster and faster. We might not be able to get by as well in seniors years as you are able to now. Just my 2 cents.

This is a modern re-telling of Somerset Maugham's short story "The Verger", about a man who was fired from his position of church verger because he couldn't read. So he opened a tobacco shop with his meager savings. Then another shop, and another, and eventually began a wealthy businessman. Years later he was asked by a banker what he might have accomplished in life if he had been able to read. The man said "I'd be verger of St. Peter's church".

I do not have a computer or cellular phone, only a landline and an IPad. I put myself through 15 years of university and I do as I please. I feel fulfilled with no Cell phone or Broadband connection fees, I have no debt. I would not have achieved this state of mind, if I spent my time paying out to ‘keep up with the Joneses’.

I'm in the same boat. I've always had an email account and always got hacked. I remember growing up without computers and cable TV. Was I lazy and stupid? Maybe, but I did make it to Assistant Manager at a restaurant in my senior year of high school. Later on when I got into the auto repair business I got ASE and GM certified. I also got to be an office assistant in a body shop. Then I went on to lead the body assembly line at a bus manufacturing company. Does that mean I'm lazy and stupid?

@@lakshmivaidyanathan2254 Having an email address is akin to leaving the front door of your house open. Yes, people may leave you information and opportunities but at the same time everything in your "house" (ie. your life) is open to scrutiny by anyone who wanders by, as it were. With talented peoples on the internet and dark web, there is nothing about you, your loved one's, and friends and family that cannot be accessed. I minimize any and all information that I have on the internet. A few years back I applied for a job, then a couple days went by they called me in for an interview! I got into the interview and everything seemed to be going well, I answered the questions I was asked, stayed calm through a test they gave me and everything was looking "OK" when they (the boss and head of human resources) came in for the last round of questions they wanted to ask me!! The job I was applying for was electronics assembly work and I knew I aced the aptitude part of the test, and I flew through the first batch of questions no problem, in front of the head of human resources, BUT NOW the big boss wanted to talk to me and ask me a couple more things. And I was ready for the last session of question so I thought!! The big boss sat down across from me as they once more went over my work history and asked me a few more general questions about my views and outlook for the job. And I was honest with them, as I was before. Then at the end of the interview the boss looks at me and says: "The only other thing we need is access to your Facebook Account Screen Name!" and I just looked at both of them as though they were joking with me!! You see even though I own a computer, and I have been an avid computer user for years, I never signed up for a Facebook account!! I did at one point have a My Space account, but hadn't used it in years and by this time I was so "done" with "social media" that it never crossed my mind to bother opening another account on another platform like Facebook!! Besides the fact, I am not very "social" of a person anyhow to start with!! It isn't that I "hate people" I am just one of those people who most folks "never understand" so I am usually all alone and left to defend for myself, and I don't go out of my way to make new friends or be outgoing enough to start new friendships!! I am not a total introvert, but frankly because I never seem to "fit in" to social circles I seldom try to fit into normal "group" things and then my circle of friends IS very small and very limited of people I actually trust too! So they both looked at each other when I told them "I don't have a Facebook account!" and then the head of human resources said to me "We can't hire you without your Facebook information!"!! That is when I stood up still looking at them both!! As politely as I could I began to speak and I said: "OK I am sorry but I don't have a Facebook account and I am not planning on starting one either! I am a very private person and even if I intended to start a Facebook account I certainly wouldn't use my own name to do it!" at this point they both looked at me stunned as I continued to speak! "See I understand computers I have worked on them and with them for years, and I have learned ways to hack on them!" and further I stated "I had a boss that had his bank account hacked for $32,000 (which IS a true story in my past), so I don't trust what other hackers can do!" It was at this point I saw the look on the boss's face and the head of human resources as their eyes followed me as I walked towards the door, still talking!! And I now stated "If you can't understand the reason for my privacy or relate to my understanding of computers, then APPARENTLY I don't need to work for you that badly, when you demand I have a Facebook account that you can hold over my head!" It was then I reached to the door knob of the room and looking back at them both I thanked them for their time and walked out!! I was just walking into the lobby of the company offices when I heard a voice behind me, and as I turned I was confronted by the head of human resources! "Thank you for being polite, but if you still want the job you can have it!" he said as I stopped and turned to face him! I once more thanked him for his time, but I knew leaving there was still the best choice to make!!! In the end that same company two years later went out of business, and today it is another empty building in my area where a company used to exist!! The last I heard they had a hard time finding people to work there, and had a bad reputation as a company for employee turn over anyhow!! So glad I dodged that bullet myself!!

And yet, here you are, being very private, on a Google platform. Did you know, Mr. Hacker, that when you signed up for anything on Google that you consented to let them hold your data for at least 35 years and to let them put cookies on your device that will track pretty much everything that device does? But, really, I wonder why they didn't just look up your name on Faceface, what with having it on your resume. Then they could see you didn't have one and ask "why?". Very weird, all around.

The version of the story I heard was different, long before Email, social media, and cell phones. The owner of a large supermarket was in a bankers office, he had just been approved for a very large business loan. When asked to sign the loan agreement, he replied that he had never learned to write. The banker said, 'Can you imagine where you would be if you could write?' Yes, replied the businessman I'd be the Janitor of a house of prayer. As a young man, in the old country, he had to work to support his family, he had no time for school. He came to New York City, seeking to financially better himself. A house of prayer needed a janitor, but he was not hired because he couldn't sign his name. Yes he started with a box of fruit, then a wheel barrow, soon he worked his way up to a renting a small store. From there with hard work, and many years, he then developed small chain of businesses. I heard the story in the late 1980's while working in a meat packing plant in Brooklyn NY. But the story is not unique, and in these days of 'online sales', there are many ways to 'make it' even now...

Interesting. A similar story was in a biography of Harry Houdini from at least 40 years ago. When he was young, while out with his little brother, the boy who would become Harry lost some money that his parents needed. He had a small coin left, so he bought a flower, and then sold it. Then bought two flowers and he and Theo (the brother) sold those. Rinse and repeat, until they’d raised the lost money. So a variation on the story is at least 40 years old.

It's definitely not true, He bought a bag of apples and basically sold them illegally. I don't know what country this is suppose to take place in but if he did this in the US, or for that matter pretty much every country He would have been arrested, possibly could have happened in india or one of the surrounding countries, but also very doubtful.

@@chaosdirge4906 while I agree that the story is fake, it is not because he resold apples. What he did was not illegal and buying things in stores and reselling them is incredibly common, especially in the US.

Great story I hate most technology anyway the most annoying having to give out information before you can view something trivial ....this has got to be stopped

I don't have an E-mail address too. Come what may, but it is an unnecessary burden, when you have enough to worry about in this world.

In my opinion only : “ I feel this video would have been better, if it was in spoken word format.” As I have a Blind lady friend who likes listening to feel good stories like this,” she asked me to write this on her behalf) As I’m not always there to explain the video’s she likes. After all I too wouldn’t want to wait on another to voice a video, if I were in her shoe’s either. 🤔💭 Otherwise a very uplifting video.👍🏽

*What a lovely story. Now go out and find an instance in which it actually happened in the real world. People in these stories succeed only because they know the author.*
