A Portrait of Homelessness

This is a poignant and compelling insight into the plight of the homeless in Sydney. My film students studied documentary making as part of our filmmaking and digital media course. One of their projects was to produce a mini documentary about one of a number of social issues. Two of my Year Ten students, Ethan Ou and Eugene Lee, chose the issue of homelessness. They made this film on "the streets of Sydney" in 2012.

Dear reader, I’ve been homeless 10 years, and as a lady, I feel very proud that I was given this opportunity to see with my individual eyes, the good, bad and ugly side of life, including myself, I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone, but as a caissière, my first job in Europe, it helped, knowing where my role was at the moment in society, I’m engaged since 13 years and my fiancé can’t work me out... that’s life, not only for me, but everyone, thanks for letting me say this, y.t.

Is saddest me to think homelessness exists in our country, when we are the 6th oe 7th richest country in the world. Politicians could sort it out in one vote in parliament, a royal charter to make homelessness unlawful. It will take many attempts for some homelessness people to get out of their way of existence, but for the conscious of the country to rest at night, it must become law now...many thanks for reading.

Dear David, hope you're OK, sorry about our situation altho there was hope somehow and I have small apartment now, sounds grand but the Grand Hotel it isn't, wishing you all the best, take care of yourself, I wish you well, if this isn't a windup, then that doesn't matter, homeless is a way of life and I'm awefully grateful for all those homeless others get me thru... bye bye from Esther

Dear Gordon, in response to your letter, and the stupid letter I was trying to write, it might sound very foolish glossing over how its been and how its going to be for me and everyone etc during so many 'setbacks' thats Life, thanks for being able to share some idea how I picked myself up everything, like an elephant or any vegetarian animal, like I belong and mingle with my flock, just kidding us other sheep, merry Christmas Gordon, tell you the truth, I'm glad this year is over, too many set-backs and glossing my way through this... we live and learn, ps, I blahblah too much, and being homeless, takes so much away from me, and I know, no one is bothered, ok, bye for now
