I saw Davidji years ago at the Chopra center... He was yelling at his staff, berating and bullying them, saying narcissistic rantings like "I'm doing this for your own good..." I can't take any of his spiritual advice seriously after seeing how he treats others in a position of less perceived power. I can't take him seriously as a spiritual teacher after seeing how he abuses his power.

I'm not defending David Ji, and I believe what you stated is true, though do you feel that people can become enlightened and change for the better? Do you believe in second chances? +Steven Peters I'm not saying to throw the baby out with the bath water... Take from David what techniques and lessons resonate with you. I attended a seminar led by him and he has great knowledge. But don't put him on a pedestal. He has his own growth lessons like all spiritual teachers and humans. It's easy to be all sunshine and rainbows when the cameras are on but how you act when you're frustrated with your staff shows your true level of wisdom. The Ji on his name is a self bestowed term of endearment it didn't come from his staff or students. I have a right to speak my truth about my direct experience with him since it has bothered me ever since I witnessed it. For the 5 staff members I saw berated that day I hope my words help them feel liberated. I'm liberated by speaking my truth. And I honor your opinion.

When he said “you don’t have to meditate 20 years, like me” I stopped the video. The “like me” exposes his superiority rather than humble teachings. There are real gurus and spiritual teachers so don’t worry about what he’s doing. It doesn’t matter.

Davidji is distorting the ancient teachings from the Gita and Upanishads. The essential teaching of these texts is the unity of Atman, and Brahman; of the untiy of the individual and God. He says nothing of this essentia truth, and focuses only the aspect of fulfilling one's desires within the world, which is ignorance and a distortion. The world is regarded as an illusion (maya), or play (lila) at best in these texts. It is not 'real', in the sense we imagine it to be. We desire water from a mirage by thinking that the world can offer us happiness through fulfillment of our desires. There are so many forces at play in this world. The desires of every being are interplaying out on Earth, such that not every person's desires can possibly manifest. Even then, to place one's happiness and focus on their desires takes one away from their own Self, and their Unity with God; the enjoyment of which is far beyond the fulliment of any temporary desire in the world. Indeed, the satisfaction of desires is limited and finite, while the Bliss and Joy that one finds within oneself is permanent and not dictated by any outside circumstance. One who finds satisfaction from within himself is free, while one who finds his satisfaction in the world is bound. Only the one who understands their relationship with the totality and God can truly manifest their desires, and then their desires are no longer their own, for the one who desires has been transcended, rather the desires of this "no-one" are a force of the totality acting through the individual. This is the true knowledge of the Upanishads and Gita, not what Davidji is selling us in this video. However, this truth is hard for some people to understand or accept. They cannot face the truth that their desires are not what will make them happy, or that they are not who they take themselves to be. For those people, I hope you enjoy this video.

I think you've added some important insight here. The only qualification I'd suggest is that as long as we are experiencing this maya-rooted "reality", there are at least some desires that are essential to be filled if we are to have the time and energy to direct our attention toward unity with the Divine. If one's belly is pained with hunger, one's lips are parched with thirst, or one's skin is clothed only in a bitter cold wind, it is next to impossible - even for an enlightened soul - to reach for Reality while living in a human body. On the other hand, desires for things that are not essentials of life - a fast car, say, or a Gucci wardrobe - can lead us on a detour from our search for Truth. That is at least how I see it. Then again, I'm still a student. :-)

Yes, certain desires are necessary for human fulfillment. Absolutely. There is no reason to deny individuality and the desires that come naturally from it. Certain desires are natural to human survival and the unique individuality of a person. These desires do not keep one bound to maya. However, desires that arise from vasanas (negative habitual tendencies) will perpetuate suffering and furthermore prevent us from finding fulfillment in life. Vasanas and mental impurities are the roadblocks that prevent us from human and divine fulfillment. These are the tendencies that through introspection we see create perpetual attachment and agitation in our minds: drinking, sex, shopping, escapism; we all have our "things" that continually pop up in our lives that cause us suffering over and over. Without addressing vasanas, fulfillment from manifesting a desire is temporary at best. What people want is to be happy, and they think their desires will make them happy, but it's a mistaken outlook on themselves.
