A notable thing is that Serperior also just happened to have the perfect stat-spread (namely Speed) and movepool to compliment this ability. When compared to the other very known Contrary abusers like Malamar and Lurantis (Enamorus oftentimes does not run Contrary-focused sets), they still end up in NU or below because they don't have speed and support movepool to eject them to otherwise greater heights. Contrary Superpower < Contrary Leaf Storm as well. Thanks to its naturally high speed, decent enough bulk, Leaf Storm giving it a +2 boost, and great support movepool (namely Glare), Serp is able to take this ability and run with it in higher tiers. The ability just happens to compliment and synergize with specifically Serperior's inherent traits very well.

Exactly. Serp being Mono Grass is actually an advantage over, what I’ve commonly seen discussed/wanted, is making it Grass/Dragon. Meteor wouldn’t have much of an advantage over Storm spam, and you’re also making it much weaker by introducing more SEs than NVEs. It’s a great litmus test for Fangame Balancing Philosophies.

@@DraconicCatgirl STAB Draco hits the vast majority of mons for neutral damage at least, while being able to hit Dragon types super effectively (a notable Leaf Storm resist) is pretty bonkers. It also would like being neutral to Fire and even more of a blanket check to Water and Electric types. I'd say Grass/Dragon Serp is a net positive overall, especially in rom hacks that does not feature Fairy types like original Volt White 2. I speak from experience. I was able to meme over the late/postgame of Volt White 2 Redux with Contrary Grass/Dragon Serp.

It's funny, if you go back and look at people's initial reactions to Contrary Serperior in Gen 6, a majority of people called it overhyped and that it would drop to UU or even RU once new toy syndrome wore off. 10 years later and Serperior is ranked 4th in Gen 6 OU, and has been a consistent top OU threat aside from Gen 8.

I'm semi-convinced Serperior would have had a one way trip to Ubers in gen 5 had it received Contrary. It could pretty much completely scare away the common weather setters in Politoed and Tyranitar, making it a huge asset in winning the weather wars, and it's 113 speed stat put in in a hilarious speed tier, letting it get the jump on the likes of Latios and Garchomp, notable speed demons at the time. In fact, Alakazam is the only common pokemon I could think of at that time that could outspeed the snake (without a choice scarf, that is).

Here's a quick tip if you're getting constantly swept by Serperior: use Skeledirge. It has everything you could ever want in a Serp counter it's a fire type so it reaists leaf storm, it has unaware so it ignores all contrary boosts, and its signature move Torch Song is a sound based move which bypasses substitute. It's honestly kinda hilarious that Skeledirge seems almost hand crafted to be a Serperior counter

Ever since I started playing Pokemon in Gen 5, Serperior was always my favorite starter. To see Serperior not just survive but thrive in the harsh power-crept meta of Gen 9 just puts a big smile on my face. Especially since Serperior managed to find value in what would otherwise be a pretty mid tera type. The success of Serperior throughout Gens 6-9 really just shows what one broken ability can do to a Pokemon and in the case of Serperior, I'm all here for it.

While I love the snake and agree its better than ever and the superior sweeper due to its high speed. I think Enamorus is the better abuser of stellar since it just hits so much harder off the bat and had amazing coverage on both the physical and special side. Superior will always use special moves, but Enamorus can hit you with moonblast and superpower on the same set.

Serperior is also notable for being one of the biggest punishers of Defog usage. You could potentially accidentally give it a +1 Evasion boost, then it sets up a Sub and starts glaring at your team as your moves suddenly have the reliability of Stone Edge.

Serperior is my favourite Pokémon ever, being the starter to my first Pokémon game, Black 2. And as a kid, I used to get called a Contrarian all the time. So finding out that Serperior was a Contrarian like me was such a magical moment for me. Love this Pokémon so much, I use one whenever I can

Serperior is fairly decent in the TCG. Since a lot of top decks are Dark based and you have the combination of Earthen Vessel and Gardinia's Vigor, Serp can do some good work. But it's so cool to see a starter that struggles as much as Meganium in the main campaign to a demigod in singles.

I argue that tera stellar is a worse tera type for serperior over just using tera fire/ground For the reasons that it doesnt change its weaknesses and that under most circumstances youd prefer just boosting with leaf storm And to add on top even at +2 a neutral tera blast is still very livable over a super effective +2 tera blast despite not getting a boost afterwards

Honestly pokemon designed like serperior are some of my favorites, where their stats lean it into one role while their ability leans towards another. Serp’s stats are designed to make it a fast and semi-bulky support mon, but it’s ability allows it to be threatening. Dragalge is another good example

Can't wait for Contrary Serperior regional Grass Fire type from the next Legends game that has 3 more speed and a signature move that's a physical fire OR grass move clone of Overheat. (It does grass or fire damage based on which does more damage, thus ignoring abilities like Sap Sipper) It will be the definitive Sun Sweeper of Gen 10, and pair perfectly with Walking Wake.

Oddly enough, Serperior Vstar has somewhat of a niche use in TCG. Because a large part of the current meta revolves around dark types with weakness to grass (specifically Charizard ex), off meta lost box decks sometimes play Serperior to hit consistent one shot knock outs on these decks. There are MANY better options, but it has seen testing and usage on online ladder.

Honestly, its stats aren’t much but seems better than all the other starters you get: have quite the vast defensive AND offensive set ups, good coverage and STAB, and it built right feels…more tanky than Meganium which is quite a feet in of itself 🧐 idk abt competitive but I remember my ‘Perior taking a Fire Blast from Shauntal’s Chandelure and kid me was like 😱🤯🤯🤯 sure I was like 3-4 levels higher BUT STILL!!! I even got off a leech seed and managed to a good swap in (playing on set mode, no nuzlocke) Even w.o the Contrary ability, it still can be fearful since it can be a mixed-speedy attacker. But my fav set was Big Root (so 252 in hp) and then I guess some in defenses since it’s naturally speedy. Get a mom to set up screens and then Serperior goes to work w Leech Seed+Giga Drain+Glare-Twave/Substitute+X Scissor Edit: I know some sets run para so it can outspend some mons/neutralize them for save switch ins, but others also run para+toxic so it can deal w stalls AND fast threats while taking a hit or two :)
