Thanks for admitting it. I know it's exciting to try to play like a pro, and I'm not saying you can't, just go off and have your own learning experience first. So that the ladder isn't flooded with people who have no idea what they're doing. 😁

@@DollyBowman When you construct your own team, you have an idea of how you made it. @DragN_H3art
@DragN_H3art 4 ай бұрын
@@misteral9045Not necessarily, team building is a large roadblock for new players because it takes a lot of game knowledge to know what works. Taking a prebuilt with some additional notes of how the teams works allows the new player to focus on in-game decision-making to enable their known gameplan instead of having to constantly figure out something on the fly. This offloads a lot of the mental overload as a new player and lets them more easily get into playing the game, which lets them build game knowledge and hopefully evolve to modifying or outright building a new team in the future.

I completely agree. I love his teams, I love HOW he plays pokemon. But I also recognize that I don't have the world champ diff needed to pilot these teams. I think his perish song team is the perfect example of the Wolfey effect. He accidentally climbs to #1 on SD ladder and has his team stolen, but no one can pilot it so they change the win con and it's still an amazing team! I see this as similar to the Matt Mercer effect in D&D. Matt is great, and he's a great DM in many ways, but you can't put those expectations on others. In both cases, great guys trying to do something unique gets copied, watered down, and repeated enough that it sours the original.

Wolfey is why I got back into Pokemon. Admittedly exactly because I like jank > normal cores. I'm absolutely not good enough to pilot what Wolfey puts out, but they're super interesting and fun and definitely keep me playing longer than if I tried to play exactly meta all the time. It's also a sign that maybe the most meta thing isn't always the most powerful, just the most consistently playable without wracking your brain with 4D plays with odd Pokemon.

People seem to have a real misunderstanding of what meta is. The meta is simply what gets played the most. Usually it's the most competitive, because the point of the game is to win, but it's also all the gimmicks and memes and anti-meta teams too.

Wolfey is the Mathil of Pokemon. Mathil is a Path of Exile youtuber/streamer who builds off-meta characters that tend to require powerful gear and high skill to see the level of success that he achieves with them; for a long time, his builds neglected player health, making it easy to die frequently if you weren't careful, but because he's one of the most popular content creators for the game, hundred if not thousands of people will flock to any new build he makes chasing the success they see on his screen.

Wolfey’s teams are the biggest double edged sword as a viewer. When his creative strategies work, it makes for some of the best content the competitive scene has to offer. Next came False Swipe and Freezai showing the singles side of things. Only THEN did KZbin decide to hard push Wolfey’s videos. Guess you could also throw meta-chasing into this category, but that one also exists outside the realm of teams/decks/builds/etc.. I wonder if there's any more out there I haven't found yet.

I’m never even played Pokemon VGC, but I think this is a bigger problem than Wolfey or Pokemon VGC. I play multiple card games that have big streamers. Any time a new deck video gets popular, you immediately start seeing it pop up when you’re playing. New combos that weren’t discovered before are being played and entire deck archetypes have been made by content creators. So while I do enjoy your video, it may be a much bigger phenomenon that just doesn’t have a term yet.

Same goes for blunder/pokeaim and smogon singles, it’s annoying, personally I call it the monoclaw effect because when monoclaw was made as a team style, ALL of mid ladder was using it

It's not only on showdown, happens the same in the actual games, if not more.

you I Wolfey wow believe hate can't Also something that's just occurred to me is that while with most youtubers I have to watch them at like 2x speed to have them be at a tolerable pace, you talk fast enough that I can't understand you past 1.25x. I very much appreciate this.

A fun thing and observation I've made is that this effect is not just limited to Pokemon. If a comp player of any game really gets a big enough voice, the moment they try something unusual, a bunch of people are gonna flock to it to try and replicate it. It's kinda funny watching herd mentality in real time

I saw this a lot on the Gen 3 ou ladder with jimmothy cools videos. I remember he covered a vaporeon team and for like.. a week half the people used it.

This applies to pokaimmd as well. I always see his teams flood the ladder the day after the video goes live.

There's a lesser Cybertron effect that happens too. He'll cover a cool new team and then everyone on showdown will show up with the same one, to the point of him running into teams he covers 1-2 videos later fairly frequently.

VGC players when they see an identical team more than once: “alright, which youtuber uploaded about their latest team? Time to spend 40 minutes watching the video on how to use it…” Smogon players when they see an identical team more than once: *scrolling through the forums at team preview* “WHERE THE HELL IS THE RMT???”
