I think best you could do is finding an adapter for PCIe with already included power lines for separate power brick, and make the pc in a way the gpu card gets out from the case in transversal position while combining with i9 9900T. I would like to see how it would perform in that way

3:53 Taking a look at the 8500T datasheet, It only has 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes which can be either 1x16, 2x8 or 1x8+2x4. This motherboard is probably configured for the latter with a possible configuration where that SSD2 section is populated by another NVME slot which can operate at x4. Though the B360 controller in this board also offers 11 more PCIe 3.0 lanes. 12:32 Considering the extra height added by the A2000 shroud, it looks like there's plenty of space for the 2.5 SSD to go in there over the CPU heatsink.
@thinhdora
@thinhdora 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your information. About adding 2.5 SSD into the extra space, I also considered. The difficulty is I might need another longer SATA flex cable to route from under the GPU which is not easy to find. Moreover, the space above the cpu shroud, especially near the rear exhaust, has high temperature. Thus I thought it wouldn't worth it. Just use an M2 SSD with suitable amount of space, and use external SSD via USB 3.0 if needed is good enough and more simple.
@Karti200
@Karti200 9 ай бұрын
The problem is not the space itself but getting a specific flex cable that both sends power and data. Lenovo has their own one used here and it is very short
@BrunodeSouzaLino
@BrunodeSouzaLino 9 ай бұрын
@@Karti200 That's just a regular flex cable which combines SATA and the smaller SATA power into a cable which terminates into a regular SATA one on the other side. Those are common on laptops. when you don't want a round cable and a vertical connector on the board. Some adapters even have a removable flex on the drive side so you can procure a longer one just in case.

The CPU seems to be giving way for the GPU to use up all the powerbudget. Notice the cpu racing to reach 800mhz a large portion of the time. I suggest that you try to run Throttlestop to force the CPU to clock higher and or increase its TDP limits which might be artificially limited by the motherboard since it detects a 70w GPU in the main pcie slot.

Back in the days of the 1st gen Intel Atom, I paired an Atom 330 with (I think) a 9600GT, but there was a minimum CPU clock requirement, so I had to overclock the Atom to something like 2.2ghz in order to get it to boot, but it worked fairly well for the time period. I also experimented later using a discrete 9500 card (The GPU component of the Atom 330 was based on a GeForce 9500) and it did perform a bit better than the onboard graphics. Kind of the inverse of the clock speed problem you had here.

I have done this with 2 P330's ( 8700T & 9700T ) Tiny's. Both have a GTX1070 8GB connected with a riser cable. They were just collecting dust haha. I'm also using a Dell DA-2 for external power ( 6+2). Zero issues with everything maxed out in Afterburner. The GPU is on a metal stand designed to go into PC case. The stand was 12$ and is all metal with magnets on the bottom. I'm considering mounting both PC's ( one on each side ) of an open-air vertical mount test bench. The one that is vertical and had a handle. They are like 30$ on Amazon. I use them for my testing and VM's. Sometimes I'll use the one to capture / record my 4K 60 Microscope Camera in OBS to take a load from my desktop. These are awesome and I had everything just laying around so why not tinker.

If you don’t want to mod, pay attention to the IO bracket. Factory fit models I know are Nvidia P and T series, they share the same IO bracket, and they have dedicated bracket from Lenevo. This is some good engineering skills, when you said oh it doesnt support 65w gpu i thought you were just going to replace and i was about to quit the video but you lowered the power down which was an amazing workaround. And 3D make case solution also was very delight. One thing ive noticed that looks GPU's are more dependent on CPU's in compare to past, i remember we killed 2500k and used it for years with highend cards, but now 8500T, 8400 like 8th gen series are struggling alot, even in the past bottleneck wasnt a big deal its was just lowering the potential FPS now it makes the game unplayable... This is a very interesting build! I am curious about using the internal PCIe slot for Oculink for an eGPU instead of trying to graft on an internal GPU. Would that be an option? Perhaps have a very small PC power supply where you create the output for the existing PC as well as enough for the e-GPU and any PCIe power it wanted? I generally would agree with the ARC cards for value here although this might also let you run the A2000 at full speed. I'm looking at all these kinds of builds thinking of putting together a "Steam machine" for fun, but want the cost and effort to be minimal. So older CPUs, RAM, and GPUs are generally adequate but I'd really like it all wrapped up in an old Dell/Lenovo/whoever SFF case.

Very interesting! and a very clean modification. The A2000 is definitely pushing it, the single slot T1000 50W isn't actually that slow and pretty comparable to a GTX1650 laptop GPU, weirdly it also comes in 8GB model. I have seen some single slot modifications of the A2000 that apparently work quite well, with a shunt mod you could permanently lower the wattage to 50W as well but of course modifying an A2000 is probably not something many want to do :)

Just a few weeks ago, I decided to buy a 1lt Mini PC of this type. I chose a Refurbished HP Elitedesk 705 G5 with Ryzen 5 Pro 3400g at 65w. After 3 days the SSD I came with died and I had to buy another one, not to mention that as a precaution I also changed the RAM for a pair in Dual Channel in addition to changing the Thermal Paste for an Artic one. Fortunately, restoring the system was easy thanks to the HP Bios, which curiously is also its Achilles heel by not having any advanced configuration for either OC or UV. I highlight the latter due to temperature issues since it does heat up somewhat when the TDP exceeds 50w. I have been doing tests and removing the Cover, lowering the temperature by about 7-9°C which gives me a slight margin to handle a little more than 55w TDP and, therefore, a little more FPS. In performance, except for temperature, it is equal to the Stock R5 3400g Desktop, and Vega 11 still works for play in HD +30fps... Honestly, for the price I paid in total, which was about 240dlls with everything and the emergency extras, I consider myself well served. Thanks to your video I made the decision to cancel my project of installing an NVME egpu and it would be better keep playing at 30s HD and save up for a Mini ITX computer with a LP GCard. I am worried about investing more in the Elitedesk and not getting all the potential out of it (or other piece crash...) But your project looks awesome and i hope you can improve the performance very soon. Greetings... Thanks for the information and explanation...

Nice mini PC to bad is held back by the CPU limited wattage; because of this up grading it won't do much because of that limitation, it would be awesome if some how the UFFI Bios can be patch so it can be adjusted.

Maybe adding a secondary power input for the 12v rail for the pcie bridge (bypass the onboard supply) and have the option to crank the A2000!

One thing about the HP mini PC. If it's the AMD version, the CPU is one of a very few that use thermal paste instead of solder under the IHS. All you have to do is carefully cut the rubber adhesive and warm the IHS up a bit to delid it. I used some PTM7950 phase change pad on both sides of the IHS (using it as a shim, as the HP heatsink won't reach without it.) and it gets extremely cool and quiet.

The NEC version in off-white (it's not quite beige, not quite white) looks better than the Lenovo. Shame it's already hard to find low-watt GPUs for this as-is, let alone in off-white. Edit: You may get better GPU performance out of a T1000 8gb instead, as the performance loss with the watt limit being so tight means some CUDA cores aren't behaving themselves.

I also have that NEC computer and i have added a nvidia P620.. I love you 3D printed case extension. But just an idea. If you make it look like a mini IBM 5150, XT or AT... It would be really cool. Since the proportions after the extension is not too far off, the cream/beige color of the NEC is pretty close too. Thanks for the video

great video i have the lenovo 920x tiny, wich have 2 nvme m.2 ports in the back and the pcie gpu card slot,, im gona get somenthing like the radeon rx 6400 LP or nvidia quadro p1000 LP. But im thinking in use some egpu adaptor to use a more powerfull card externally, do you know is the usbc ports in the lenovo tiny pc support tunderbolt 3? or the usbc expancion installed inthe back can be used for external gpu adapters, nice video

I have a m720q. I had the P1000 and upgraded it to a T1000. Similar performance to a 1650. You can also look at a T600. Also if u install a gpu make sure u download and install throttlestop and disable bd protocol. Otherwise bios limits cpu to 800mhz due to extra power required for gpu. Disabling it removes that limit. Also I don't think it supports Tb3. It's a usb3 port.

For the model in this video, the USB-c isn’t thunderbolt, just USB 3 interface. I’m not sure about the ThinkStation version. BTW I manage to make it performs as it should in my latest video. Check it out. You don’t need an external chunky card.

Lenovo M920x and P330 models would possibly come with dual NVMe slots and Quadro GPUs. Also you can have 65w processors if you get the copper heatsink that also has VRM thermal pads. I would highly recommend the 90w power supply. Or with GPU the 135w, 170w or 230w (Legion laptops or P series workstations came with these)

This may sound crazy but hear me out. RTX 4060 low profile exists. Yes, it draws 50% more power than the A2000 BUT it's much more powerful than the A2000, close to double the performance. If you manage to undervolt it enough it should still deliver better performance that the undervolted A2000. 4060 is also half the price of a A2000 at least where I live.

4060 Low profile requires a power connector. The new RTX 3050 6GB doesn't. So that may be a better alternative.

Charming that you gave a new life to it. I have recently bought Dell Wyse Dx0D (5020) to run home server. For gaming modern games - I dont think thats the use case, rather emulators or pihole, home storage, which wouldn't require the additional GPU. Maybe PS3 games? For modern gaming nah, laptop or Steam Deck.

I can’t say for sure, but it looks the m910q doesn’t have the connector even the board has the available area. It might be a cut-down version of m920q. You might find a blank space where the slot should be.
