To be fair I think you did brilliant for your first marathon. Great time. It was harder for us supporting getting across London with all the runners closing roads. Took me 2 hours to get out of grenwich. Your sporting ability will get you through alot of challenges in your future. (Ironman is calling you)

Congrats, Alex. Now that it's obvious you can run well and evidence points that you can also swim well, triathlon is calling your name!

Firstly, hats off to the time for a first timer and also the continued efforts for little bleeders!! Because of your nutrition video and GCN's high carb challenge. I decided to dabble and see if it works, can confirm that after a sample size of 1 ride... I think I can see the benefit. I normally had about 70-90g, so upped to 100-120g per hour and the energy levels throughout the ride were consistent (Mum can testify to that). I wasn't ridiculously hungry when I got home, but the main benefit from this ride at least was that I felt great Sunday morning. So thanks to you and GCN for putting me onto this!!!!

Great effort. I think a general point regarding fuelling and hydration is that what is available varies massively between different events, so it pays to research that in advance. Also definitely going to try to practice taking on as many carbs as possible in training ahead of my next Marathon.

That's a really great effort to be fair. Would be interesting to see you run some of the shorter races 5k/10k hard, but if you returned to cycling and never ran again you still deserve a lot of respect for finishing a marathon.

Solid run as expected. Paced perfectly. I want to do a marathon one day, most likely only one, but still do it

I was going to carry 6 gels for my marathon but instead took 8 with me after your last vid, also had a few bottles of 'carb laden fluid' on the way, and i felt great until the end! I think youve got a point on nutrition in running, certainly for midpackers.

As a runner of >35 years, brought up on the "old school" 'train your body to run without food' philosophy, I really appreciate your experience on the carb intake front. I think we runners have been underfueled for so long. Something to work on for my next marathon. If you're after another marathon with a great atmosphere, have a go at Brighton - I'd say the atmosphere is better even than London.

Fantastic run Alex. As you liked the atmosphere during the road race then you would love a trail race! 👍

I've been anxiously awaiting this video. I've recently started adding more nutrition on my rides and wondered how this carb lead would translate to long distance runs. Thanks for sharing the experience.

I think you did great. Your fuelling was also good. Too many runners use too little and think that they are going to be able to recruit enough energy when it is easier to fuel.

Well done, it was my umm... 8th marathon and by far the busiest and noisiest, even compared to Paris. My nutrition was 90g carbs/hr in chews until 2 hours, then I had a caffeine gel and then I felt that was enough. Water I always just use the ones provided and that's usually fine. I got a PB, but I only think I'd do it again if I was going slower, maybe to pace someone else, and take it all in a bit more.

Katherine Switzer said it "If you are losing faith in Human Nature. Go out and watch a Marathon" (Switzer was the first Woman to run a Marathon - Boston 1967) Did my first London the same day. Significantly slower than yourself so well done on a mega result! If I've learnt one thing from London its that I need more carbs per hour (probably averaged around 45g / hour. All from a well know "hydrogel" manufacturer. All gels, no liquids) And probably inevitably hit the wall around Canary Wharf. Which I couldn't understand really, as put me on my bike, with 3 or 4 bidons and a selection of energy bars and I can do 112 miles without falling apart. I completely agree that the on course "carb options" are not sufficient for the rest of us. I can drink from the cups but there was only 4 Lucozade sport station on the whole course. And they weren't spaced very well IMO. Something for others to consider. Saying all that, I enjoyed the event. Crowd support, even in the torrential rain showers was amazing! I can see why it's always so damn hard to get in to! Though if you could all NOT enter the ballot that might increase my chances!

Sugar is key! The reason I can run so fast on such little training is my diet choices. I did a 16:44 at West Beach Parkrun last week. Ive only ran 70km total this year and 93km last year.

That's a fantastic effort, well done Alex - can I ask, did you do any strengthening exercises in the build-up? Glutes, pelvis stability etc? Joints can really suffer over longer distances can't they, as you mentioned, and from a "sedentary" low impact sport we're particularly prone. Thanks.

as somebody who suffer from poops even on 30 min runs: cut the fiber. no fiber intake for 2-3 takes prior race. eat only rice, ricecrackers etc, to whatever you need kcal wise. you'll be fine for raceday. i can do 8 hour events without pooping. on daily life, always shitty runs.

That’s the downside with big races, miles walked to the start and from the finish. At least you get support from the crowds you don’t in a small one.
