A problem with the backhoe, 1968 case backhoe 580ck

We have ran into a problem with our Case backhoe, we think its the clutch but a mechanic is telling us that it might be the transmission. Trying to figure out how we can get this fixed so we can keep using it on our property.

I've been pretty lucky with this backhoe, everything that has gone out or needed fixing has been relatively inexpensive to fix. That being said, it seems like every other time I use it there is something small that needs attention. lol Thanks for watching. :)

Some older cars had a hydromatic trans and a clutch pedal. Some Case tractors had a shuttle shift trans could have linkage bent or adjustment problems.

I have this same machine but the one I have has the shuttle shift. If its a shuttle it will have the lever on the left side of the steering wheel to shift from forward to reverse. Have you got it fixed yet?

Watched your video. KC Missouri here. Learned something about the Case transmission systems. My question. If a person were going to invest in a machine, which would be more utilitarian a rubber tire back hoe (like yours) or a skid steer? Thanks and good luck on repairs. The cost quoted you for straightup cylinder repair seems very reasonable (btw).

Thank you. As far as a piece of equipment goes it really depends on what you will be using it for and how often you will be using it. On a large piece of land with lots of trees I would say a backhoe but land with few trees probably a skid steer. Skid steers have lots of attachments you can buy or rent but backhoes can remove stumps with ease. For me, if I could have 2 pieces of equipment they would be a mini excavator with a blade and a nice tractor with a bucket on the front and a 3 point on the back. :)

i betcha right on being clutch. it would make a trans act funny and not work properly.

Fingers crossed it's just a clutch. That's the cheapest solution to the problem. I'm interested in this other type of transmission this mechanic is talking about, I have never seen a transmission with a stick shift and a clutch pedal and without a clutch. almost doesn't make sense. Would be nice to understand what he was talking about though. :)

@@KoalityofLife yeah considering we can look up a replacement clutch and pressure place for it. lol. it prob is pressure plate not releasing all tension so it keeps spinning which makes hard to get in out gears and or grinding. or slipping.

@@KoalityofLife i think their is a filter for the trans. cut it open see how much metal is in there. lil flakes prob wont matter but chunks or slivers would let know something is wrong internal. but i bet that machine has had a life. but i my self dont see a trans being totally wiped unless was abused.

I'm looking into it more now. Need to get a manual for it and start learning how to service it myself, something I should have done when I first got it. I really hate paying someone else to fix stuff for me. lol
