Tim Curry as Long John Silver in a Muppet version of Treasure Island was one of the best casting ideas in the history of the dramatic arts.
@ryanodonovan94973 жыл бұрын
It's only a shame that his version of Long John Silver wasn't in any of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Him interacting with Johnny Depp and/or Geoffrey Rush would've been more golden than the treasure that pirates typically hunt for.

My favorite line is "Show him you've been practicing!!" Which implies the pirates got together on the ship and rehearsed this song. LOL
@c_king10314 жыл бұрын
Funt Fact! Pirates actually did have performances on their ships; sang songs, acted out plays, and had free form "rap battles". There are still songs you hear along the coasts that originated or are thought to have originated from pirates/sailors (Drunken Sailor from earlier in the film is a good example) so, maybe one of them did write and preform something like this!
@temptedbyasiren4 жыл бұрын
I just learned about the old "rap battle" recently. I believe it was called flyting. Basically back and forth insults that rhyme

"I could've been a lawyer, but I had too much heart". Probably the first lawyer joke ever said in a Disney film, haha!
@Amber4176 жыл бұрын
LynchMobFilms actually the first lawyer joke Disney ever made was in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. When Mr. Toad is accused of stealing a motorcar, his horse Cyril comes to court to testify. When Cyril says Toad got the motorcar the honest way, the prosecutor asks “what is the honest way?” To which Cyril replies “I thought you wouldn’t know that, guv’nor”
@poposterous2364 жыл бұрын
I was expecting "I could've been a lawyer but I didn't have the heart" because that would be a twist on the cliche. As a lawyer joke it wouldn't pass the bar. Lawyer jokes are like lawyers, they're not clever.

Okay, fun fact I’m suddenly realizing- this part of the movie might actually be slightly DARKER than the original book. For one thing in the book Jim goes ashore willingly, whereas in the Muppet film he’s outright kidnapped and taken prisoner. In this version Long John outright threatens to kill Jim (though he it might be more to look strong in front of his crew than any sincere intention to harm him), and tries to force him into joining the pirate crew. In the book Jim is never actually faced with this decision and in fact leaves the pirates very quickly, allowing him to find Ben Gunn.

Professional Pirate lyrics: [LONG JOHN] When I was just a lad looking for my true vocation My father said "Now son, this choice deserves deliberation Though you could be a doctor or perhaps a financier My boy, why not consider a more challenging career?" [PIRATES] Hey ho ho! You'll cruise to foreign shores (HAHAHAH!) And you'll keep your mind and body sound (Sing it lads) By working out of doors (Show em’ you’ve been practicing!) [LONG JOHN] True friendship and adventure are what we can't live without,- [PIRATES] -and when you're a professional pirate- [POLLY] -that's what the job's about [LONG JOHN] (spoken) Upstage, lads. This is my only number (sung) Now take Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish all despise him But to the British, he's a hero and they idolize him It's how you look at buccaneers that makes them bad or good And I see us as members of a noble brotherhood [PIRATES] Hey ho ho! (Oh I love it! ) (Tis poetry in motion!) We're honorable men And before we lose our tempers we will Always count to ten [LONG JOHN] On occasion, there may be someone you have to execute,- [PIRATES] And when you're a professional pirate- [CLUELESS] -you don't have to wear a suit.........what? [MONTY] I could have been a surgeon. I like taking things apart [POLLY] I could have been a lawyer but I just had too much heart [CLUELESS] I could have been in politics 'cause I've always been a big spender [BLACK-EYED PETE] (spoken) And me, I could've been a contender [LONG JOHN] Some say that pirates steal and should be feared and hated I say we're victims of bad press that's all exaggerated We never stab you in the back, we never lie or cheat We're just, in fact, the nicest guy you ever want to meet (spoken) Tell the truth, lad. Do you really think the Captain and the Squire are planning to share the treasure with the likes of us? Can't hear ya. No? And we being the rightful owners, Flint’s own crew, who shed our blood getting it here. Join us lad. Donate your compass to the treasure hunt and get a full share! [LONG JONG and PIRATES] Hey ho ho! It's one for all for one And we'll share and share alike with you And love you like a son We're gentlemen of fortune and that's what we're bound to be And when you're a professional pirate- [LONG JOHN] You'll be honest, brave, and free! The soul of decency! You'll be loyal and fair and on the square But most importantly,- [LONG JONG and PIRATES] -when you're a professional pirate You are always in the best of company!

Treasure island is a classic story that has been done many times. Long John Silver is one of the great characters of literature and the best film portrayal of that character was done by an actor in a movie with puppets. There's something beautiful about that.

Since I was a kid, anytime I think of Long John Silver I see Tim Curry :) He fit the role perfectly like no one else ever could/can! Oh, and Hans Zimmer's composition here is AMAZING, it's no wonder Disney called him back for Pirates of the Caribbean!

Honestly, the title credits for this film is an INSANELY good pirate theme - I wonder if he regretted using it up on a Muppet movie instead of keeping his powder dry for a film like POTC! (probably not, given how insanely good that music is as well - but the thought of it always makes me smile!)

Tim Curry is so good in this movie, because the man is practically a muppet himself.

Jim was right. All the theatrics aside they're nothing but murdering pirates. Long John is trying to convert Jim with greed. All he asks for is for Jim's compass. A symbol for his actual moral compass that belonged to his father. We see the pirates smile and singing while they steal and kill each other. Gonzo and Rizzo later in the scene tag along with Smollet just because Jim is family. They don't need any other motivation. Like Long John said earlier in the movie, "true friends are worth their weight in gold." We see the pirates turn on Long John when they discover the gold has been taken. This is why Long John can't kill Jim. He was the only one who couldn't be corrupted by greed. Jim lives on to journey with his family while Long John presumably dies alone with his gold. Anyway I'm still listening to this banger a decade later.

When asked in an interview if there was ever a "Love that got away," (to paraphrase) that he wished he'd pursued, but failed to, Tim Curry said, "Yes... Miss Piggy."

My husband and I are listening to the excellent Classic Tales podcast by BJ Harrison doing TREASURE ISLAND in seven episodes and it is fabulous! The only equal to BJ's (voice) Captain Hook is Tim Curry. Now we must see the Muppets' movie again. We haven't seen it since we were kids. Can't wait.

When Tim Curry goes, this is my only number.. I like to think that was a little 4th wall humor jab at the movie for only having Tim Curry do one song.

The great thing about this song is that Tim Curry practically is a Muppet - he's plainly having fun with this role, and that makes this song all the more enjoyable =)
