The name of the archway isn’t Micklegate, it’s Mickiegate Bar. Micklegate is the name of the street you were standing on when you talked about it. Lots of streets in York’s old town are called “somethinggate” derived from the Old Norse “gata”, meaning a street. There are lots of streets with this format in, for example, Copenhagen. FridasGata for instance.

The star inn was used as a makeshift field hospital to treat injured soldiers from the battle of marston moor During the English civil war. 1645 . York is an amazing city full of history.

Spent some time at the Golden Fleece a few years back. Good food and ale. I met a girl who worked there who had had a strange experience.

I asked the bartender if he'd seen anything strange, and he said no, but one of the girls working there had. He brought her out, and she said she hadn't actually seen anything, but one night when she was washing dishes, somebody was whispering in her ear. When she turned to look who, there was nobody there. In the week I had in York, I had dinner there about three times, usually sat by the skeleton at the bar.

Weren't any doormen on when we visited, just the one lady on the bar who was lovely. Can't really speak for anyone else that works there :(
