The principle of kindness, and the celebration of its triumphs in a kinder society than the ones most of us in the west live in, makes these books oases of hope and faith humanity. They are not escapist. They are inspiring. Because they are possible. Like many hundreds of thousands of other readers, I feel a strong gratitude to Alexander McCall Smith.

How delightful! He is the most positive and prolific author I know.

I was first introduced to the #1 Ladies Detective Agency by my brother-in-law's wife who gave me a stack of books, which included the first 3 in that series. She recommended them but I wasn't interested in Africa or female detectives there and couldn't imagine what kind of stories they'd be. I finally broke down and started reading the first book and I was really surprised how much I liked it. From the first book, I went on to read all the series, in order and have enjoyed the characters and the stories so much.

Such a lovely man. I don’t believe an author can portray such goodness without being a person of integrity.

I want to believe that but at least along actors I know it's not true. Used to be a Robert DeNiro fan

@@highpointsights I think our culture has it all wrong. Many people idolize actors and take to heart their opinions on topics for which they have no real education. I think of actors who sell products and ideas about healthcare that have no basis on evidence. The biblical word hypocrite meant actor or a person who wears a mask. At the least, I think it’s a mistake to idolize a human being, at its wosrt, its dangerous. Donald Trump might be an example. In the case of Alexander McCall Smith, however, I’ve read several of his books, all fiction to be sure, but I think his philosophy is fairly evident. His heroines embody compassion, loyalty, honesty, shrewdness without cynicism and responsibility.

I think we do get a fair idea of AMcS's character through his stories; basically decent, mixed with the frailties of human nature and a proper instinct of goodness.

These books are making me fall in love with Botswana, and I never thought I'd ever want to travel to Africa. Now, I really want to visit Gabarone someday.

Alexander is my favourite author and has been since I came across one of his earlier books. After reading it I had to find all the books in the series and then all the other series.....and this thirst continues with utter delight. Thank you for giving me so much pleasure and insight into the wonderful world of people, thoughts, places, animals and environments. Not to forget compassion, truth, justice and understanding.

His interview in Toronto was very engaging. He’s usually very funny in interviews. This one is the most serious one I’ve seen.

I love Mr. McCall's book. The Botswana ones and the ones about the woman detective in Edinburgh.

Yes, the 44 Scotland Street novels are just lovely. The mixture of erudition and sweetness is reminiscent of P.G Wodehouse in some ways. They leave one with a warm glow - and a desire for more.

Don't think Mma Ramotswe would like to travel to Scotland or US. She still has some slight animosity from independence from Britain, and she has a poor impression of American attitudes in general 😊 though she might like to visit Clovis Anderson.
