Dave, this is the greatest gift I've received in over a decade, and "EVER" on KZbin, I'm so excited to watch listen and learn from you, the beast master extraordinaire. Edit.. Dave, your theories are indeed repeatable, as true science demands, and this is the most important aspect of your videos... I've personally appreciated learning a little bit about your past interactions with animals, thought truthfully I'm not surprised by that revelation, mate.. in all of your future endeavours I truly wish you all the best, and I also anticipate receiving knowledgeable updates from you, concerning such projects.. PS, I totally agree with your opinion of the 'SPIDER JUSTICE WARRIORS' in that I've also found that most complainers or suggestion casters haven't actually ever kept a spider...

The tarantula's heart is a long, slender tube located along the top of the opisthosoma. The heart is neurogenic as opposed to myogenic, so nerve cells instead of muscle cells initiate and coordinate the heart

Quick Q/A - what is the most dangerous spider you have? - ever been bitten (I was bitten by a Aus red back as a kid- it was like a hot nail being inserted in you) - Do you plan on getting a male Sydney funnel web (the most brutal spider ever) I have one living in a hole in my garden Been told to kill it, but it is going to the milking rooms at Aus Reptile park for anti venom

Dave & Camera Lady I just finished watching your recent Q&A video and simply wanted to comment to compliment the obvious commitment the two of you have maintained and the breadth and depth of content that has resulted as a consequence. I wrote to you one time in the past and mentioned then that I am one of those subscribers who is not personally a hobbyist. I suppose I watch your videos mostly for reasons of general curiosity - however, to the extent that I may glean hints of your personal philosophy of life via some of the videos, it occurs to me you might find my deeper reason for having become a regular viewer to be of interest as well - even though it has nothing to do with spiders, per se. I apologize for its being a cliché, but I can say I am literally a poet-philosopher. I studied philosophy at UC Berkeley and though I never formally studied poetry I have had many poems published, and my first full book of poetry, titled, “It Doesn’t Work Like That” was published in 2016. The connection probably won’t seem that clear at first, but one of the philosophical concepts that drives all of my writing is the pursuit of truth. As anyone might conclude from my making that statement, the past half-decade + (especially for any citizen of the United States) has been a particularly challenging era when it comes to finding people who have a respect for the truth. As it happens, I have found many KZbin channels (all sorts of subjects, from quantum physics to tarantulas) that have helped me survive the age of Donald Trump - and “Dave’s Little Beasties” is a prime example. So, I realize this longish note is hardly more than a personal confession but your wonderful Q&A video left me thinking you might find the deep-down reason for why someone like me, having no interest in any sort of exotic animal husbandry, might develop such a dedicated interest in the subject of keeping and breeding tarantulas. You and Camera Lady do a fantastic and much appreciated job of revealing so many of the normally hidden truths of the world of tarantula spiders.

I didn't know there was going to be a Q & A but, I have a burning question: In the wild (or captivity) - do tarantulas recognise other T's that are the same breed.....for 'romance' or reproduction? I've often wondered by seeing many T's that seem to share physical traits. Also, we've expanded our exotic animal collection with two ball pythons. I know you said maybe in future that you would get reptiles again and I'm hoping to hear your views on ball pythons as pets. I wasn't keen on snakes until my daughter wanted a BP and I fell in love with hers so now, I have my own. They are amazing - so gentle (and extremely inquisitive).....

I accidentally handled my H. gigas when I got her. Tried to get her out of the shipping container, she wouldn’t move, I stayed calm but all of a sudden she bolted out onto my hand. Most stressful 5 minutes of my spider mum life 😅 I was a bit scared of getting bit - however, I still stayed calm and gave her the time until she strolled off to explore her enclosure. Lovely and interesting video ❤

I love jumpers for their inquisitive natures and generally friendly demeanors. My only gripe with them and most "true" spiders is how short their lifespans tend to be. I had a bold jumper for almost 3 years, but most die within a year; if you're buying them, that's not a lot of "return on investment," so to speak. I have a brilliant jumper right now that ballooned right into me when I was fishing. She's so pretty and nice, and I'll be sad when she's gone.
@AfroRyan
@AfroRyan 2 жыл бұрын
I'll also mention that although I never handle my tarantulas, I handle my jumpers everyday. They truly seek out my hand, which admittedly they know they're about to he fed and/or watered, but sometimes they just climb and jump all around my fingers, and often stop to just start grooming themselves and relaxing. I feel like gears are turning inside their little minds a bit more than, say, the average tarantula.

Really love the way you treat your spiders, it helps an arachnophobe like me to learn more about them when they're shown and cared for so calmly and with so much respect. I'm a snake keeper myself so I have a great deal of appreciation for those who promote learning about exotic animals instead of unnecessary dramatics to spook the "civilians". Did you notice, that your balfouri on the lower shelf in the back just moulted out on camera? Nice little extra content. Btw, from what I know, Tarantulas have actually a real heart, its located in the middle the upper front part of their abdomen, right behind the cephalothorax.

Speaking as someone who doesn't keep spiders - I adore and look forward to your videos. It's actually because of watching you, I have a much different reaction when I see garden spiders. Last week when I went downstairs into my basement, I went to turn on the light. There was a thin web across the light switch and two small spiders moving about. I looked at it and said "Oh, it's a nursery web - I'll leave you alone" (clearly we don't go downstairs that much, and I figured the little ones would eventually find their way out). My other thought was to collect the web with a paint brush, and paper towel to move the smaller spiders outside. Thank you for all you do! Much love to you and the Camera Lady! 😁

Thank you Dave (and Camera Lady) for this video! You've answered a lot of the questions I've had for you, and questions from others that I didn't know I wanted to ask! I've had a bit of Arachnophobia from the time I was little, but nothing debilitating. They always just made my skin crawl. Though I have always known that they do provide a service of killing a lot of the bugs that can be harmful to humans. I have always harbored an equal fascination about spiders, and the ultimate question that Arachnophobes eventually come to... 'what about the largest of spiders'? Back in the days of cable TV, I became obsessed with documentaries on tarantulas. Since then, I've come across channels like yours, primarily focused on tarantulas. You have diminished a lot of my fears, and even created something of an affinity, or at very least, a greater respect for tarantulas. I still don't have any real interest in becoming an owner, but it's still extremely interesting to watch. Thanks for all that you do.
@CaroleEvans93436

I got over my fear by watching Dave and getting a few slings - and then three juveniles. You soon get over your fear when you watch how comical they can be. I can sit for hours watching them dig, like little bulldozers and they flatten the substrate out using their bums. The moulting process is also magical as you don't realise how much they can grow after each moult. I talk to them all (nine of them) and my husband and grown up children laugh at me constantly as they know how I used to completely freak out at the sight of a house spider!

@@CaroleEvans93436 There are Arachnophobia classes, where people are so entrenched in their fears that they can't even hold a printed piece of paper with a spider silhouette! I've never been remotely close to that level. I could manage being an owner, and I "might" be able to convince my wife to be ok with it, but I think it would take more attention than I'd want (and need) to give to them. So, I live vicariously through Dave. 😊

I honestly could listen to you all day long. You are so insightful. I live in the UK and I live in a large village. There's an absolute abundance of wildlife if you look for it and sometimes if you don't!! I used to get woodlice in my flat but there's Cellular spiders that moved into my flat because there's food. I let them stay with me and I don't have pests. All I see are the bodies. I've read so much about them and I've read online that they are cannibalistic but I completely disagree. I've watched them so much that I know if one moves home, which they do quite regularly, I can notice if I see it again which one it is (mostly). I've seen them living side by side and none of them eat any of the others. Nature is so fascinating, the Cellular spiders in my home don't often live on the ceilings because they are eating food that is found on the floor mostly. This means they have learnt to adapt because most of them live on ceilings normally. The only time they go to the ceilings is to carry their egg sack to a high up place where the female guards them until the tiny dark dots disperse.

Dave, I have two questions that should have been asked but were not. 1. How do you maintain and keep all of your specimens organized? I follow your recommendations and use front glass labels, but there is so much more that needs to be accounted for. Purchase origin, arrival date, price, size, sex, bred date, sac date, extraction date, and so much more. Do you pen and ink all that documentation, or do you have super memory? 2. This is a point, not so much a question. When you were answering the venom question, the actual physical size of the spider is a very considerable factor. 😃😃😃😃

A lot of the information I carry in my head 😂 I know every spider in my room and can remember what I last did with it , the only things I write down are moult dates and pairing dates , egg sac dates , and yes the size of a spider can make a difference on the amount of venom given but doesn't make ant difference on the toxicity of the venom 👍
@calliew311
@calliew311 2 жыл бұрын
That seems weird, since baby rattlesnakes actually can't control their venom and when they bite, it can be way more dangerous since it's not one bite or shot of venom it can be several all at once. At least that's what we were told when 2 classmates in 6th grade got bitten by the rattlesnake on a field trip. I live in northern Nevada, so I think that's a Western Diamondback.

Great video, great questions and great answers, thank you both for entertaining and educating us. Dave, I love your attitude to the "patreon" question, too many people see KZbin as a business, it's refreshing to hear your response to the question. I'd definitely buy some merchandise for myself and kids, I'd love some T shirts and hoodies, keep up the great work👍🏻👍🏻❤️

Yay, I loved this Q&A it was really interesting to hear about how you started out, the world is my oyster I cannot wait for a proper tarantula, seeing you say that jumping spiders are boring, it was like an arrow thrusting straight into my beating heart, I will let you off on this occasion! I am very excited about being a Patreon , I have Sam from Bug realms, Gar Arachnotube, and the rest are dogs that are mistreated in another EU country, so I have a space on my page just for you Camera ladyI love this channel, during COVID, I was in hospital with covid and your channel was a breath of air, the nurses and doctors would stand behind me to watch these incredible videos, they were speechless, they went from ooh to OMG these tarantulas are beautiful! When a break was needed but they couldn’t leave the ward they would sit in my wheelchair and watch your videos! Much love to you both . ❤️❤️❤️🕷🕸🕸🕷

I like that you present these spiders from a scientific view. I am interested in how they live and the breeding. The stages of their life and that you don’t put bows on them or a dinner jacket. I would imagine that they would be terrified if you picked them up so i am glad that you don’t do that. You show us what they thrive on and give us information that we cannot find anywhere else. Bravo to you sir and thank you for a fantastic channel.

Such a great video, explaining a lot of things about the hobby, and cool background story 👍 I had a real laugh, at 26:00 Camera Lady having listed several names, from people who asked, if Dave's ever been bitten. Getting ready to answer it looked like, and then the "good lord, there's more" expression 😂 I'm glad something truly good came out of the lockdown, and big thanks to Camera Lady, for delivering the final motivational push 😁 It's also good to know, someone is looking after you Dave, so you hopefully won't burn out, for all the good you do for us viewers 😊 But you do seem well aware, if there's a balance 😀 100% agree, it's very therapeutic seeing Spiders at their best, disarming the fear, but never the respect 😊

I just wanted to say thank you for answering the question about moving your spider from enclosure to enclosure. Mine just molted from it's last sling body into a small juvie. His enclosure is fine for him (or her), but I want to move him, but felt bad about "destroying" his house. I never thought about it the way you said it, that in the wild they may have to move houses all the time due to their burrows getting destroyed. He/She is an T Albopilosus, named Hairy, and I think I'll move him to a new more suitable enclosure for a juvenile.

Just watched your Q&A vid and it was as interesting and entertaining as the actual spider “documentaries” you produce. I am 70 years old and have only just learned about the beauty and fascination of spiders mostly thru your videos. I truly doubt I will ever keep a tarantula but I have really enjoyed your introduction to their world. Thank you for sharing it with me. It has greatly enriched my life the last 9 months. I look forward to further insights into the tarantula perspective. 1:42:12

Your calm knowledge is comforting. The knowledge is new to me. In my home years ago, there was a large wolf spider who came out. Stood watch. It returned over several years. It was a sort of companion. Wouldn't kill it or let any other of my family. Never knew there were so many tarantulas. You are like me. Your favorite anything. spider , flower, song is the one you are working with at that moment.

You have been a great help to my husband. He's learned a lot. He is now in the process of building a table like the one you have, as a D.Diamantimensis sling bolted and jumped to the floor(Thankfully spotted it a few hours later going for a wander across the floor). He is also wondering what type of enclosures you use, the one with the sliding lids? Patreon is fine if the content creater gives something in return, i.e videos specifically for them or the occasional Live for them. They could maybe get earlier access to merch.

But Dave, you are giving us something! It’s knowledge!! I didn’t know anything about spiders except to be afraid of them (because of what happened to me when I was much younger). The knowledge you have given each of us is like a professor in the front of our classroom. If people wish to donate maybe you can look like it that way. Your knowledge about spiders is amazing!! Wow Dave that was awesome! Thank you so much for doing what you and camera lady do!! I have a few questions for you if you have time or if you want to answer on the next q/a is how old is too old to breed a female, how many time’s can you breed that same female, and how often can you breed a female? I’m asking cause I want to do some breeding of my own and I want to do it safely
@daveslittlebeasties
@daveslittlebeasties 2 жыл бұрын
Once a female is mature she will breed between each moult , once she moults she can start again , the average tarantular lives for 12 years ? , there are many other factors to think about not all will produce viable sacs every time ? temps , food , humidity theres so much more to breeding ❤️👍
