Great tutorial! Question, when I tried to paint black over the subjects to erase the sky pattern it was literal black markings ... how do I avoid this ?

Thanks, Audrey! Great question.That means your image thumbnail is selected instead of the layer mask. In your layers panel, click your layer mask to select it and then give the painting another try and it should work. Can you do this on multiple photos? How could I maybe add the sky I just did to a photo that is a tad different but still needs the same editing done to it?

Great question, Kelsi! So yes, you can definitely repeat these steps on multiple photos. You can also use your Move tool to drag your Sky layer with the layer mask over to another photo. You'll most likely need to tweak the layer mask a bit to suit the new photo, but it can definitely help speed up the application process when you're working with multiple photos that need similar editing.

When the instructions are quickly given such as "you can always grab a soft brush." where is this located and what is the setting so this brush. It seems effortless when you are doing in but sadly in a parallel universe what happens on my screen is completely different.

Hi Julian, so sorry for any confusion! "Grabbing a soft brush" means selecting your Brush tool from your tools panel, and then setting the Hardness of the brush to 0 (this ensures the edges of that brush are soft and subtle when painting on your image). To adjust the Hardness: after selecting the Brush Tool, click the downward pointing arrow next to the Brush Icon at the top of your screen, and you'll find the Brush 'Hardness' setting just below the Brush 'Size' setting. Hi Sarah, I'm not sure I'm understanding fully what you mean. Are you talking about being able to go to File > Place to find your photo? Great question, Mike! I've found that the closer you zoom in and the smaller of a brush you use, the more precision you'll get when masking.

My skies are rarely white and multiply mode will not work correctly for this method if you have a blue sky or a sky with other clouds in it.

That's true. This method works best for applying skies where the original sky is overblown or overcast. Sky replacements, however, require a bit of extra work. For sky replacements, you can first brighten or paint with white over your current sky in order for Multiply blend mode to work best. Or, you can keep the sky overlay in Normal blend mode instead of Multiply, so that the new sky covers the current one.
