🔬About Me 🔬
I'm a booktuber and science writer/communicator with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, which means I'm on KZbin to either talk about books or science (or both). okidokiboki is my own personal channel to talk about books and whatever other stuff I'm in the mood for (it's also where I do nonfiction book club with Nicole from sweeneysays). But I also work on other science KZbin shows and podcasts. including Crash Course: Organic Chemistry, Journey to the Microcosmos, and the Tiny Matters podcast. I love hearing about Booknetfest, it sounds like such a fun event! I remember being subscribed to Sam and Marines when the first one was announced, and wishing so badly I could go. Still haven't been able to attend (living in Ireland has it's downsides lol) but hoping it continues for years because it just sounds wonderful

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on Yellowface when you're done because I was very underwhelmed by it and have a lot of feelings. I don't want to tarnish your reading of it though if you aren't finished with it. I had fun while reading it but it has not held up to any scrutiny in my mind. Also welcome home!!

thank you❤️ and yes, i'm super curious how yellowface is going to go for me too. i had a mixed experience with poppy war, and based on the yellowface reviews i've seen, i sort of expect to have the same issues...but in a way that i hope actually helps clarify why her writing does and doesn't work for me at the same time?? i have no idea, we'll see!

Yellowface goes into those publishing details A Lot and for me, it's exactly what made it work so well. On the other hand I'm a writer and have been following the industry for 3+ years so I know exactly what the protagonist means when she describes e.g. signing with a small press or having her editor get fired suddenly. That is what makes her human for me and balances out all of her self absorbed petty bullshit lol. For me it's a book about how the publishing industry fosters envy, loneliness, and fierce competition between writers, and then enables the worst traits of people that it takes in. Idk how interesting it is for people that aren't in the industry though so I'm curious to hear your thoughts once you finish it!
