This movie came so close to the conversations I have in my own head too it’s actually kind of bewildering. The thing about the thoughts of the other characters around Jake still being audible and sometimes mixed up and confused makes sense since I often think about what others are thinking. Definitely got me crying and hoping that there is kindness in the world, or if not that it’s within us. Jake is a lovely person that I can relate to. The direction of this movie snd the acting was spot on. Portrayed depression so well for me. Definitely rewatching this again.

I think psychological films like this can be "chilling" and "spine tingling" until you realise that all the film's devices are being used to convey deep psychological narratives, then it becomes a pure work of art, the chills and fear-factor just transform into the shear ecstasy of bearing witness to genius film-making. More of this please Netflix.

Absolutely FACT. It took me to the second viewing to appreciate it in this way. Admittedly it took months for me to watch it a second time because the first time I felt so uncomfortable and unearthed by it, but now watching it again I was able to sit back and appreciate the cinematic devices used that made me feel so uncomfortable the first time. Meeee toooo! It kind of reminds me of old memories when you were younger, during winter like those long car rides and everything kind of warm and soft and safe, like in its own little cocoon vortex of time, when the future and adulthood was so far away and you had all the time in the world for talking and talking. Now Time seems to have speeded up so profoundly and the years are flying by and life is just continual day after day trying to stay on top of the tasks and problems that keep flying in and you’re just getting more and more behind no matter how hard you try! So I just push it all to the side and go lie down and drift off dreaming of those soft warm cozy days I can’t pin down but sifting somewhere in my mind like flour..

@@michelleallen3288 and “we always have the choice to end it whenever we want”, which is basically the gist of the book, has always been the one thing that’s kept me calm for most of my life hh, so I guess that’s another thing about it that makes the film so comforting for me. and for the most part it captured the vibe of the book exceptionally well too, and creatively so, since it’s basically just an old man’s flying/jumping thoughts before he decides to end it, which is hard to shoot, let alone making it interesting, so really don’t think kaufman deserved the hate for this one hh

This book was incredible. It's a short read I finished it in a couple of days. I bought it because on the back it says you'll be afraid but you won't know why. The entire books crawls under your skin and makes you so uneasy and by the ending you realize your clenching your jaw; but still you don't know why. The phone ringing the lemonade the snow the school all of it makes you so overwhelmed and without answers. This movie if it's anything like the book is going to hurt a lot of feelings, I can't wait.

Jamie Dailey depending on age it just gets more somber and melancholic. For the ones in their 20-40s I can see it playing out as a horror movie for them especially. For the older ones, they start progressing towards senility and are prolly already done with pondering over the same questions repeatedly. They perhaps know everything’s a trap, there are no answers and one can live or survive anyhow. Ultimately nothing really matters.

Toni Collette probably won’t be Oscar worthy in it. Unless Kaufman did some serious work to the original story, her role is not very big. At best she’s a supporting character in one act of the film

K C yeah but when you finish the story Toni Collette’s character is the last thing you’ll be thinking about. Plus the film is most certainly not academy friendly, it’s looking at an adapted screenplay nomination at best (out of respect more than passion) and nothing more

I read about how Charlie was so frustrated after the cool reception to Anomalisa he was thinking about never doing another film. And his own brutally honest introduction to the Being John Malkovich screenplay book revealed a writer who wrestled with crushing depression even back in the 90s. Even when he was writing some of the best films of all time. As someone who knows depression myself, I can imagine that the idea of "ending things" might be something he's contemplated more than once. I'm glad you keep going, Charlie. You're brilliant and we love you.

Jake and Lucy are like the representation of two different people that are constantly having internal discourse in my head. Jake me is the one with low self steem, self pitying and hopeless while Lucy me is the one with logical reasoning which always reminds me that I shouldn't doubt myself and gives me reasons why I shouldn't. Sadly, the Jake is like 80% of me and I listen to it like 80% of the time. And with the way I push people away and not having any interest making new friends in my late 20s, I have a feeling that I'd be sad and alone and depressed like the old Jake when I grow old.

Just finished watching the movie and I have to say I disagree. I'd say It's a cautionary tale about isolating yourself from others. That to be afraid of sharing your traumas and thoughts with others is to be ensnared by them in a vicious cycle until not even your wildest fantasies of what might be or what could have been aren't enough to keep that voice in your head going "I'm thinking about ending things.". The reason this movie seems to shine a light on the pathetic human existence and how insignificant everything seems is because we're seeing it from the perspective of someone who is slowly losing all hope and the will to live. There's a lot to unpack as to why he won't open up to others. Was it his disfunctional upbringing, was it some sort of behavorial or mental issue that left him feeling isolated and forever judged and ultimately jaded, was it something he did in his past he can't forgive himself for(or something he continues to do that he won't seek help for.) or was it the sum total of all of these things? When you want to live a fulfilling life with others but all you do is share it with figments of your imagination and live it vicariously through the words and actions of others (all the references to movies, musicals, poems, short stories, philosphy etc.) life is eventually going to seem very empty and bleak.
