Yeesh.... ten minutes to suggest enlarging the exhaust vent holes with a screwdriver to increase flow. For those who value their time, jump to 6:58.

Man I'm slightly hammered at the moment but I know this probably isn't a new video but if you keep that integrity and humbleness that you have in this video there is nothing you cant do or figure out. Shit man I love the video. Not only because of your professionalism but mainly because of your mentality. I've been a mechanic almost all of my life and run my own shop and have been so successful it's almost miserable because I never stop working but I have worked with mechanics that know everything and have done everything but are afraid to pull the next ticket because they have never done the job. Dont let any negative comments bother you. You are a stellar individual and keep on keeping on man.

Great video ! Just picked up a similar craftsman and I think my exhaust is clogged. Isles hood Boggs under load. Took muffler off and it ran a lot better

Interesting stuff. I just bought a new set of bits to port out my saws today, like you, I'm a Husky guy with one Poulan. I'm going to try this instead, also gonna have to notch the adjustment screws because I don't have a fancy screwdriver. Thanks for posting.

The muffler on my 1950 model is different. A nut holds a metal cover onto the muffler. Inside, is 2 small holes. Each of which has an inverted hex head deep inside. You need a long and skinny inverted hex socket to get in there. PITA! I don't have the correct sockets to get the bolts out.

I've got a PP4218A, and saw your video while looking for air cleaner location. Cool idea, will try and subbed.

You can take the screen off of that spark arrestor and it still contains the spark and you wouldn't believe the mount of power just from that

Need to take the piece out that has the screen around it and get rid of it. Here is why you open those holes up but that baffle in there don’t release enough exhaust pressure for that to change anything you’re going after the baffling when you need to go before. So by getting rid of it that’s more or less what you would be doing I work on the small saws every day and larger ones have for the past 30 years but once you go tweaking on the exhaust you’ll have to readjust your carburetor jetsWhich is no big deal at all lots of videos on it that can show you

FYI unless you are removing metal, you're not actually increasing the size of the port, you're just changing the shape. You may be stretching the metal a tiny bit, but the only real way to open those ports is to remove metal from them.

That's not true, in math compare area of a circle vs oval vs rectangle with same perimeters.

The ports he is referencing are basically vents punched out of sheet metal. So stretching them open further does indeed enlarge them.

Here are the honest issues I see. Number 1 unless you port the intake, exhaust and change over ports, you are not gaining anything. You are only making it louder. By this I mean an open exhaust gains you nothing but sound if you are leaving the exhaust port in the head the exact same size. second, Poulans are cheap, not only in price, but the bearings and seals would not handle any more power gain than what it already has. You over rev this tiny thing, and cause an air leak in your main sea where the fuel and air truly go from the intake at first until going through your chnge over ports, you will get an air leak and basically destroy the saw, as a new seal kit is around $50 if you are capable of doing it yourself, on a $100 saw. I am not discouraging anyone, or knocking anyone, just stating a few facts as food for thought.... :-) Enjoy gentlemen

that being said, if a guy has the time, and wants to pull the cylinder head off, port and polish the intake, exhaust, and changeovers, I think you could get a massive power gain! fun project! However, as mentioned above, dont expect it to last long, as the press in seals on these are mild soft rubber, and you will smoke the seals right out of it in short order. But.... would be great practice to hone your craft, learn a few things, and be able to do a better job porting your next, bigger size saw :-)
