A Quick Look at Doom Alpha Builds and an Inspired Mod

I've been replaying Doom with the Doom Delta mod that restores some cut ideas and content. It's a neat little mod so I thought I'd make this little video to showcase both the mod and the alpha's.

Of course! That was my thought as well. Doom's mods are almost endless. It'll be a nice alternate content stream for the channel along with the usual HL stuff.

Following Wolfenstein 3D’s success, id thought of making a licensed shooter game based on the Aliens franchise, and negotiations were even made with 20th Century Fox. However, id wanted more creative freedom, so eventually they scrapped the plan in favor of an original game. That game was DOOM.

The Doom Alphas remind me a bit of a prototype for what Doom 3 would eventually become. Alongside the 'Doom Bible' design document, it seems the game was intended to go for a very different vibe than the finished game, but one a little closer to Doom 3 at least conceptually. This 'story driven' Doom would have been fun to see fully implemented, but I guess if it had, we wouldn't have had the Doom we have today - nor, probably, the entire First Person Shooter genre it inspired.

And of course, Half Life. With the NPCs and implied more ponderous atmosphere/exploration aspect, the Doom Alphas bear more than a little in common with Half Life conceptually.

I think it has something to do with the rendering you use in GZDoom. Again Im not sure but if you change it to OpenGL, the distortion wont happen.

people are talking in the comments about how "Doom Alpha was gritty!" but coming from someone who's read through the Doom Bible, it was also supposed to be cheesy as all hell, like really cheesy. i honestly feel like, at least on this front, the released builds of Doom are an upgrade on the Doom presented in the Doom Bible.
