I was an olive oil chugga-lugga-lugger. When I minimized oil from my cooking routine, it was not a problem. I just use veggie broth. Now, when I eat something processed like a meat sub, I can literally taste the oil. So glad I stopped using oils in my cooking.

I agree about the calorie density problem, but for me and others with any kind of heart disease, the far greater reason for avoiding oil is the devastating effect oil has on the arteries, which whole food sources of fat don't seem to share. Edit: I realize you know this Rip, because your dad taught it to me and you emphasized it in your book too. Just saying for anyone else reading the comments.

0:42 "nutritionally" should be swapped with "calorically." Oils are calorically dense and nutritionally dilute, i.e. the opposite of what we want:)

Thanks for sharing this. Blue zone areas in the Mediterranean also use Olive oil very freely. They live well and long. I do wonder about some modern diet trends that may be based on science but are not time tested. Science does not have all the answers.

What about peer reviewed research that shows high-polyphenol rich olive oil to be beneficial for artery function and possibly triggering anti-aging pathways. Not saying to bath in it but it would seem, in the context of a whole food diet, that perhaps moderate use of this oil may be cardio-protective? Or am I missing something?

It's ok in reasonable amounts. Unless your overweight, then I wouldn't consume something with that high of calories. @@lostboi3974 Thanks SO much for saying this. I’m 15 pounds underweight, allergic to nuts and seeds, and can’t eat whole avocado. But I can tolerate a small amount of avocado oil & sunflower oil. And cacao butter. Otherwise I have almost zero fat in my diet which is really unhealthy. If I cut out oils I’m really in trouble. Without fat your body can’t utilize certain vitamins. So thanks very much for this. I’m already so stressed for what I can and can’t eat.

i wrote on someone's vegan wall, i am too lazy to try to stomp all of the oils out of olives, in order to fry something or use it in a recipe. Sadly, someone else repied, "just buy it in the store." serving size of olives..5... [and there's nutritional value in 5 olives] over 5 servings of olive for one tbls of oil, with no nutritional value, except heart clogging empty calories. on the spot, the person did not understand, what machinery has done to damage our health... machinery path to Big Pharma programming syntax errors.

Inaccuracies abound in this. E.g. Plants provide the precursors to EPA and DHA and only the possibility of a trace amount of either... exceptionally inefficient access to an important nutrient. Carbs add to visceral fat, not a reasonable amount of a nutritious oil having a good Omega 3:6 rato. This conversation is way bigger than this short video.

Olive Oil has been used liberally around the Med for millenia, including in the "Blue Zone" areas. Likewise, sesame oil in the Far East, particularly in China. They're not "water frying" their stir fries in their woks, over there! 😉 I've just (mostly) given up eating animal sources of fat and am totally off dairy, but I would struggle to give up drizzling Olive Oil over my steamed veg and salad. I much prefer Dan Buettner's more moderate approach to the subject.

What if you are 10-15 pounds underweight and allergic to nuts and coconut and avocados? That’s me. I eat cacao butter and small amounts of avocado oil. I really do get ill eating whole avocados. It’s more of a sensitivity but am able to eat a little oil. Other than these I have virtually no fat. Then what do I do? I have histamine intolerance (so olives probably won’t work if you know about histamine intolerance) and am vegan.

There is pain and inflammation in my back that I have been fighting with an almost entirely whole food plant-based diet (except for high dose Omega 3 fish oil) for a long time now, and it kept getting worse. Lately, I went back to coconut oil based stir fries with ketogenic levels of fats from olives, avocados, nuts and seeds, as well as olive oil on raw salads, and I couldn’t believe how much pain it took away! Last night I also went back to baked Atlantic salmon fillet baked with rosemary, garlic powder, pink salt, and rosemary--along with a hummus (with fats in it like tahini, and sunflower, I think) wrap, and a coconut oil-based stir fry of shiitake, onion, garlic, spinach, cabbage, eggplant, and broccoli with curry powder and garlic powder on it, and I felt great today with no pain in my back and gut! I don’t know what I am fighting, but no question, coconut oil and coconut fats, flakes, milk, MCT oil, etc. and salmon with everything I mentioned above, absolutely just doused my pain and inflammation. Go figure. Having said all that, I also feel my arteries constricting post-meal such that the numbness and tingling increases in my toes, and my legs start to feel stiff-suggesting a narrowing of the arteries, which was really bad 4 years ago to the point of my barely being able to walk in March-April 2017! I did Wahls paleo plus keto because they thought I might have MS! Turns out it wasn’t MS. But Wahls and healthy foods, instead of Domino’s pizza night, burgers, eggs most mornings, etc., etc., turned it around. All I am saying is I need fats-even coconut oil fats. I still try to stick to whole food fats like whole olives and avocado, but going ketogenic again truly doused the pain... What can I do to maximize arterial function while eating keto/low carb? ...That is the question!
