John krasinski (director)said that the native planet of the creatures had no solar system(sun)... over millennia they evolved in the dark,then their planet exploded, because of their inpenetrable skin most of them survived the explosion & travelled on the planet's fragments, eventually making their way to earth, hence why they arrived on meteor fragments.
