I think because of awkwardness. I personally met a blind person once - my whole body functions normally- and I was trying so hard that to be normal that I eventually messed up and started literally talking about things he couldn’t do like sports but I didn’t even realise till the end of the convo. Some of us are terrible at it even though we have good intentions . But I hoped he had given Millie time to talk as well! He straight up acted like she was barely there
@susannamills92516 жыл бұрын
Not to be picky, but to add on to everyone requesting captions (which is also hugely important) the interviewer was kind of rude to Millie in the beginning by asking Noah questions about her and how difficult it was to deal with her deafness before even addressing her directly. Am I the only one who thought that was a bit off?

theres plenty! people just dont care enough to seek them out. Switched at Birth had an amazing deaf cast including marlee matlin, the Deaf West production of Spring Awakening got transferred to broadway for the few month time slot that was available and had an amazing half deaf cast (also including marlee). Big Hollywood just doesnt care enough to cast people who deserve to be casted and have lived certain experiences and normal people graze over things that may have something to do with a deaf person because they dont want to have to change the way they watch things.

For the people confused by the comment: The captions would be for the viewers that can't hear. They had an interpreter so the interviewer could understand the actress and the actress could understand everyone else. Lisa is pointing out that they are interviewing a deaf actress, but deaf people can't watch this because they didn't make it accessible. This video is basically just for hearing people. Deaf people who know sign language will be able to understand what she is saying, but not the rest of the interview.

I want to take my daughter to watch this movie. She is 11. Anything inappropriate in this film? I know it is rated PG-13 but is it simply for the monsters, language, or sexual scenes?
@moonstruck5626 жыл бұрын
headbounce22 there r no sexual scenes in this movie, I don't even remember any bad language. I think PG-13 is more for the horror parts which were little disturbing but not too much, like it's nothing gore-ish. I'm very conscious of what I let my 13 yr old watch and I found this appropriate for her age, especially knowing where babies come from. Honestly I found the previews (before the movie started) of the upcoming movies waaay worse and inappropriate than the "a quiet place" itself. Hope u guys enjoy :)

@zvign75546 жыл бұрын
Kawthar Bakhach the same way you can with your voice. It's a language. I know that you mean well, but what you said can come off kind of rudely. Deaf people have had to fight for their languages and there is a long history of hearing people attacking and invalidating them and treating them as inferior.
@fairytitania33006 жыл бұрын
Because it’s a completely separate language, the grammar is different. Interpreters are amazing people and have to work really hard not only to see the signing, but to translate it to English as the deaf person is signing. Which is why they’re a sentence or two behind the signer.
@the_competent_gamer94546 жыл бұрын
z vign it comes off as ignorant, not rude. Stop getting so pissy, the person obviously means well
@chloeclaires14676 жыл бұрын
Kawthar Bakhach of course she can express everything through sign, its her language, speech is not the only way to express yourself, ASL is a language like any other with its own grammer and history and beauty, the way you said it is kinda offensive, but i understand if you didnt know, i suggest you look more into deaf culture it will be worth it, just remember language is not just a communication device it is a way to express who YOU are, THATS what ASL is

Captions for the actual Interview, starting at first question: Interviewer to Noah: "Noah I'll start with you. Working with Millie. The entire cast had to learn sign language to communicate with her for the film. Tell me what it was like working with her." Noah: "well she's quite stupid and she kinda bullies me a lot *laughs* No, no, it was really great working with Millie cause when I first came on the set, I saw her and she looked like an amazing person and I was like "I really wanna be friends with her", you know, so I kind of - out of the friendship - I got sign language, because obviously, she's deaf and I'm not so I had to learn how to communicate with her, and that was really great cause it bonded our friendship even closer. And I think having someone, you know, because we are both from different countries, in the same hotel, it's new to us, so just having someone there to help out and be there for you when you're sad or something *shrugs* I dunno, it was really cool." Interviewer: "Well, you're both magnificent in the film. And Millie, we have some of your fans here. Deaf, or any teenagers around the world - you've inspired so many. What is it like for you to inspire so many, what is it like for you to inspire so many young kids?" Millie: "Well, I feel it's a real honour because all my life I didn't have someone to look up to as a mentor - a deaf role model - so I feel like, you know, that's really important for me; to be a deaf role model. Not just for deaf people, but for all disabled people, and for letting Hollywood know we can be anything: we can be included in more films, we can be an airplane pilot, we can do anything we want to do - and I think that's an important message." Interviewer: "Do you feel some pressure, being a role model?" Millie: "Of course, yes, but I have so many people behind me, supporting me, so I think I'm gonna be okay." Interviewer: "Well, I learned a sign which is this *signs 'ready'*, you seem to be ready to be a role model. Um, Noah, your co-star John Krasinski was recommended to you by George Clooney who also directed you. Now, give me a difference between the two as a director or being on set with them." Noah: "Well, they are really different and both amazing. I mean, honestly, but that high level, you know, what you think or dream about them being really lovely - they are - and what you expect them to be, they are, and yeah, it was great to work with George. And then for George to mention me to John - two highly respected directors/actors - and to get me to get into John's movie, it was really really phenomenal." Interviewer: "Well we're excited for it to open, it opens on theatres on Friday, it's called a Quiet Place-" Noah: "Don't go if you get scared *grins*" Interviewer: "I'm already scared, but uh, you know, we're really excited about it."

Ok the only thing is I wish as someone who is learning and knows some sign. The people on camera should have shown the girls body in her sign space it was difficult to see the signs and it doesn’t seem like they are being very accommodating to deaf people, even though there is a person translating to English
