What I loved about living in Europe (Germany / Netherlands) I being a history buff, visited most of these sites, with several multiple times. I can never get enough of history especiall WWII. I was born 7 years after the war in Europe ended...and loved seeing it all.

My grandmother's cousin went in 3 days after D-Day and lost a leg. I remember talking to him a few times about his time there. He lived a good long life and died maybe 10 years ago. I was proud to call him family!!

Don’t worry about the time you spent there. You came, saw & undoubtedly will be back. My Dad landed on SWORD at H hour in a Sherman Crab flail. The British paratroopers took the Mervile Battery which helped protect the troops but there were still heavy losses. The LCT running parallel to my father’s got hit & taken out. Pegasus Bridge & the aforementioned battery are a must. Thank you for recording this👍🏻

When Churchill said, "we shall fight them on the beaches" it came true, but on the Nazi occupied beaches not Britain's. Just want to say a sadly belated thanks to my neighbour growing up, Neil MacEachern who landed at Juno beach that fateful day. Neil passed away a few years ago, now I realize what a hero the man truly was. Just did not grasp it as a kid. Shame on me, but I know I will see him again one day. Thanks for another great video.

Ray, I don't know if you saw my comment when History Underground was at pretty much the exact point where my great-uncle Carl landed with A-Company, 116 Regiment, 29th Division at Omaha. Next to Gold, which was next to Juno. My great-uncle and your friend/neighbor did what they had to do and we're better people because of it. They came back, yet were casualties and we must never forget that. I was blessed that my Uncle would talk about his experience....to a point. ONLY with my Father and me, and we understood when he "clammed-up". Feel no shame.....your friend knows.

Thank you for everything that you were able to do on this trip without which we wouldn't have seen any of it. Its nearly impossible to imagine looking at the beaches now to understand all that happened at all of them and how terrifying it would have been for both sides.

Was excited at the start of your trip to see if you were going to visit Juno Beach. Hope your next trip would include The Juno Beach Centre, Beny-Sur-Mer Cemetery, Canada House, Pegasus Bridge, and the Merriville Battery Site. You will be impressed to visit Vimy Ridge Monument for the 11000 Canadians who were killed in France and Belgium in WW1 who have no known graves. The monument is so impressive that Hilter ordered his army not to destroy this monument. Lots of WW1 and WW2 Canadian history in France, Belgium, and other countries in Europe. Thanks for all what you're doing. Enjoying your page. Can't help being a proud Canadian.

To know that Sword was closest to Berlin and the British didn't take the casualties American forces took at Omaha, yet took casualties never-the-less.....When you finally go back, I hope I'm able to go with you. THAT would be a great opportunity to expand on the history you've provided in this series. To also remember that General Omar Bradley was sooooo close to pulling back from Omaha.....I salute the British 50th Division at Sword, the Canadian 3rd Division at Juno, the British 3rd Division at Gold, the US 1st and 29th Divisions at Omaha and the US 4th Division at Utah. Always remember and please never forget.

@@TheHistoryUnderground JD, when you see MM after a british empire soldier's name; it means that individual soldier has been mentioned officially in military dispatches. It is the lowest distinction for combat a british empire soldier can receive.

I have to chuckle! Like you we wished the days were longer and the time at each of these hallowed places was longer. I hope to return again but, likely not at my age. My wife arranged the surprise tour for us on my seventieth birthday and going was a once in a life time adventure. I do so appreciate these videos friend. Hi, I'd just like to say what a great find to come upon your channel. Each episode is so well documented. I've completed the Normandy series, but much more to watch! I do need to visit Normandy. My parents live near Slapton Sands. This is in the county of Devon in the UK. Before the D-Day landings, the Allies would use the beaches along the coast to practice the D-Day landings because it was said the settings and conditions were almost identical on the French side. Here is a tiny village called Torcross, where 'Exercise Tiger' was proceeded. The Allies in training got shot in a surprise attack from a U Boat. Here today, since the 1980's, there is an American Sherman Tank that was pulled up from the sea bed close to the deep shore line. If you had a chance my friend, visit here, and all along the coast is deep in WW2, from Dartmouth to Plymouth. I now live in Toronto. Lastly, do you play Axis and Allies? There are some great set ups of ww2. One of them is D-Day which covers the beaches. It's a great game filled with facts, and channelling. I have subbed and liked. Thank you. JazzyJon30.

Great videos we went 2013 to all beaches , pegasus bridge and more on a leger tour . We had a d-day + 5 vet on our coach very humbling experience. At omaha my friend Stuart phoned his dad who had ferried troops there on d-day in a landing craft. Hope to go back soon.

Thanks for the video. As a side trip on my first European trip I visited Juno beach. It was quite humbling to say the least. What I didn’t realize until then was that the walk from Ouistreham to Courseulle-sur-Mer (Sword to Juno) was a four hour walk. Well worth it. I recommend the bunker museum as well as the Commando #4 museum at Sword beach.

I’ve truly enjoyed your series on Normandy. Being the son of an American serviceman and a French mother. I visited the area with my French grandfather who had been in the French military and resistance, and unfortunately sent to Dachau for his resistance activities. There appears to be many more memorials, and museums now, and you have peaked my interest in returning there. Even as a young child I was most impressed and horrified at the number of the white crosses at the American cemetery, finding markers from the small town in the US that I lived in. Certainly it is something this country should never forget and should always remain proud of for the sacrifices made for freedom. Especially in these days when another potential World War appears to be possible. The US stood strong then, and will hopefully continue to be the the world’s best hope for preserving freedom.

You did so well with all the vids in the time you had. My friend and I were there for the 75th celebrations last June. Even though we were there for a week we still didn't get to see everything we wanted. The biggest surprise was the massacre site in the town of Graignes. I didn't think many people knew about it - boy I was wrong. The memorial on the anniversary was as stunning as the bagpipe players were on Omaha Beach the day before.

The casemate is WN37 and was the bane of 231st Brigade on Gold beach for example the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment lost almost 200 men and officers either killed or wounded thanks to bunkers and positions including WN37. it was absolute carnage. I'd suggest looking up the Battalion and the brigade as it was 1st hampshires who liberated Arromarches.

I saw an interview with a German Warmach Soldier who was on an MG42 on Utah Beach. He said his defensive location they ran out of ammunition. He just walked out of the bunker and surrendered.

Actually, Ouistreham is actually portrayed by the town of Port en Bessin in the movie. I am a Canadian battlefield guide here in Normandy working for Gold Beach Company, based in Bayeux. Look us up if you're in the area.

I gotta visit the Richard Bong museum. I’m superior Wisconsin. It’s pretty cool. A lot of crazy memorabilia and artifacts. Richard Bong was WW2s top ace and they have his plane and Medal of Honor in the museum

I've been to all the D beaches many times as we visit France annually. Love these videos but on the subject of the landings and logistics the Brita hardly get a mention. There were 2 US, 1 Canadian and 2 UK landing beaches. The naval support was largely from UK, my dad was aboard HMS Black Prince supporting US troops at Utah. There were British signals units in the initial landing waves at Omaha. The Mulberry harbours overwhelming British designed and manufactured. You certainly have enough scope for another visit especially the British glider assault on Pegasus Bridge. Keep up the great work these videos are first class.

A view from the UK. Seeing the casemate on this video that had received direct hits reminds me that some of you may not know there is more to it than just a hit. For those that do not know when an explosive shell hits concrete or stone, depending on the size of the shell and the thickness of the wall, once hit on the outside this can cause splinters of concrete to explode off the wall on the inside injuring or killing soldiers inside. If any of you have hammer drilled through a brick or concrete wall will testify with a crater on the other side. It was one of the major causes of injury in the old wooden ships when hit by cannon balls - splinters. It is a tactic weapons designers have used through time. It even happens in tanks only that comes at you hot as well.

You did a great job.It's amazing just how long in miles the invasion area is .I beleave the Canadians were the only ones that achieved their objection on D-Day. may I recommend the book Sand and Steel by Peter Caddick-Adams.He does an excellent account of each beach on D-DAY.Also Snow and Steel about the Battle of the Bulge.

Yes the Canadians were the only ones on D-Day to reach their objective. The rest of the beaches were pinned down by German resistance until late in the evening

I must admit that on my week visit to Normandy it was hard to fit everything of ww2 interest in. And even as a Brit and ex soldier there is something that is different at Omaha beach than the other beach in my opinion. And that is no disrespect to any other soldier who landed anywhere that day. You must do Pegasus bridge next time. That is very interesting.

If you ever make it to my neck of the woods, I will take you out to see the Adelaide River War Cemetery that I have mentioned before and show some of the military sites and history that we have here in Darwin. Tomorrow is ANZAC Day (Saturday April 25) here in Australia but alas due to the virus there will be no marches or dawn services. May they all live on in our memories and Lest We Forget. I have really enjoyed your series on Normandy and would love to do it myself one day. Maybe when all the madness is done.

Hopefully me and my son will travel from the USA to France in September 2021 if the virus is under control. We want to see all the D Day Beaches. Is 3 days enough time to visit and see them in pretty good detail? We also want to see Pegasus Bridge, American and German Cemeteries and the best museum while we are there. We are open to suggestions as to the museum we should see. And, what kind of camera are you using for these videos? It works very well. Great videos btw. Very informative.

I started at Bayeux (wonderful in the Summer!) and then spent a few days at the US sector, later quickly checking Juno and the British sea sectors pls Merville and Pegasus Bridge.. Really regret not seeing much of the inland of the British sector like I did on the US side (St Lo) Oh, the Polish museum at Mont Ormel was REALLY good too. Damn, I need to go back ASAP.. ^^

Walking D-day -You are correct. The text that I was using as a reference was misleading on that point and had Love listed with Gold Beach. I’ve also found some that say that Juno only consisted of Mike and Nan. Regardless, I’ll make a clarification in the description. Thanks.

The History Underground :Pinning down the absolute truth on D-day is an impossible task. John Steele probably wasn’t up the tower at St Mere Eglise. Den Brotheridge was probably shot by his comrades. Authors copy mistakes from other authors, official reports are often incomplete or doctored, and veterans often don’t remember too clearly what they did or make shit up.

It's a sad fact (and I really hate to say it) that in almost every American documentary, you will find virtually no mention - and even less footage - of British/Canadian troops in any action anwhere during WW2. It's almost as if to say "Oh, the British....yeh, they were there too!" You'll see the Ami's in the UK, training, relaxing, cavorting with the women, boarding trropships and lots of battle action, but rarely, if ever, any British troops. D-Day footage is always about Omaha and Utah, US Paratroopers, et seq. As a consequence, many Americans seem to be unaware that the Brits had more troops, tanks and heavy weapons (artillery etc) on the D-Day beaches than Americans. The Royal Navy had the greater number of ships and firepower than The US, although the US had far greater numbers of landing craft. Nevertheless, the Brits get no coverage from American films and documentary. The general impression gained is that it was America that won the war. Even when it comes to the Pacific, there's never a single mention that the British Navy were there in force - albeit in a mainly support role. So now, in this collection of videos, some recognition is given - but again, so little as to be "Yeah...the Brits were there too, and here's a glimpse to prove it!" It's one thing to have a national sense of pride, but unfortunate that it's to the exclusion of all others who also paid a heavy price for freedom. Thank you for re-addressing the balance a little!

To your point, at least you can take solace in knowing that our friends, the Russians, may have actually “won the war” or significantly reduced the length of the war by inflicting 80% of the casualties suffered by the Germans. Yet, there is rarely a mention of their role in media beyond Stalingrad. That doesn’t mean the Ameri or British didn’t greatly contribute to Germany’s defeat. It was truly a team effort by the Allies in almost every respect.

@@livingadreamlife1428 You've moved away entirely from my point. No-one was talking about Russia , or indeed any other areas in the greater scope of the war. This video was about "The D-Day Landings" - mainly 60 miles of beach assaulted by British, Canadian and Americans, plus a small unit of French troops. It happens to be one of the very, very few videos on the subject, where Allied troops OTHER THAN AMERICANS - were given any recognition, yet provided more troops, heavy weaponry and ships than the Americans. It's always about the American involvements at Omaha and Utah. So my comment was centred on the point that this video did actually give some recognition. Had the video been about Russia or anywhere else, it would have been a different matter, therefore the point you make has absolutely no bearing, much less a parallel in the topic.

Awesome videos loved every part of it (you got yourself a new subber) however, take this critic as a way to improve your videos... for example as someone who knows about ww2 this was pleasant to watch, this cannot be said for the people who are still learning about d-day or ww2 in a whole. Adding critical information before and in the actual video could be somewhat easier to understand for all the newcomers such as dates, strategic positions, the strength of both sides... the sole reason why this beach is so important and so on. Even adding images for comparison. Lastly please make a Carentan video.

Yeah, that's why I admit in the video that I didn't give them their proper due but intend to return one day and do it right. I was just severely limited by time unfortunately. I do have a few other videos that focus solely on the British positions.

Shame he didn’t respect the British and Canadian beaches as he should of, he is usually very good, it took the allies to work together to win the war, so lets hope he does them credit later

typically american, thinking or knowing for sure that the second world war is all about d-day...i can tell you there is more than just d-day. I bet you don't even know about Operation Market Garden and where Hell's Highway is.
