I’ve owned 14 Alfa’s in the past 35 years. They’re such gorgeous cars, even their 4 door family sedans. The sound of the engines, the driving experience, it was all mind blowing. The quality depended on the model and year, but the biggest enemy of any Italian car was RUST. I never drove mine in winter, or on rainy days. As long as you don’t mind the dedication of ownership, they’re incredible cars.

yeah, if someone over here in Europe had been told that they could get 40k USD for their GTV6 or even 50k they would told you to get off the mushrooms. 50-55k is not GTV6 prices, that is borderline Montreal prices. though 6's and specially the flathood "2.0"s have had an extreme increase in prices on the last 12 years. an nice rust-free but not spot-free "AR116"-type GTV2.0 like mine today would set you back at least 100k here so 10k USD since ratio now is 10:1 and a fully restored GTV6 would be twice that, and a 20k GTV6 would be a very hard sale and mostly take a very long time. my 84 GTV2.0 i bought in 2003 for 25k NOK and prices was flat since late 90's to 2010 (that would been around 4100 USD at that time with a ratio of 6:1)

I owned an Alfa GTV 6 just like that back in the 90's. I sold it because I needed more room in the driveway and I'm an idiot. The real genius of this car was that it wasn't particularly fast but through aroma, sound and motion it convinced you that it was. I remember a hot August day in Toronto when I was going through an uphill left then right curve on Bayview Avenue howling along, downshifting and feeling like Senna when a taxi passed me in the outside lane!

The 2.5 V6 is a tiny 152 cubic inch normally aspirated engine producing slightly more than 1hp per cubic inch. That was a very respectable feat of engineering for it’s day and pretty darn good even now. During a time when analog emission controls were choking the horsepower and drivability out of most engines the Busso V6 was exceptional. Magazines of the day rated the GTV6 as good a performer as any sports car in its price range. Today a minivan is quicker. Then again a 350cid Corvette in the 80s had a wheezing 170HP and today would get blown into the weeds by a Toyota Camry. Time marches on.

@@jwrarmstrong - It’s easier for a 65yr old geezer like me as long as my memory holds out. 🥴 Compared to what came before and the decades after, horsepower and drivability of cars built during the 80s was generally pretty awful. Cold starting and hesitation issues abounded. Compression ratios dropped and there were miles of rubber hoses under the hood. Most so called muscle cars sounded like vacuum cleaners and catalytic converters made exhaust smell like rotten eggs. There were scant few cars that drove well. The GTV6 was one of the few that didn’t suffer drivability issues. It did have reliability issues but those have all been documented and sorted out by now.

My dad leased a new '84 GTV6 back in the day. I drove it a bunch and it displayed none of what you describe. The steering was "Delectable", still one of the best I ever experienced and it was easy / just light enough once you got the car going above about 3 mph. The handling balance was on point, easy to throttle steer and without much initial understeer, assuming you know what you're doing. The clutch was absolutely fine.

I own a GTV6 that’s every bit as nice as the one depicted here. I bought it for $20K 6 years ago. People thought I was nuts for paying so much. I’ve noticed some people love to pick them apart like they’re junk. I find those accusations to be way off base. The GTV6’s quirks are no worse than those on multimillion dollar Ferraris. Their handling is sublime. The clutch take up isn’t odd at all and works fine. Their exhaust note is a symphony. The positive attraction it gets from young and old onlookers is heartwarming.

These "Alfa" jacking points could be found also on Fiats from the 60s till 80s, and in FSOs till 2002. In early Fiat and FSO version you could lift two wheels with one jack, but the downside was if corrosion was involved, the jack would rip a part of the floor off and the car would fall on the ground. This was a real weakspot of those cars. It's also interesting how Alfa has a skidplate. Many Italian cars had very low sitting oil sumps that could be easily destroyed if the car went off the road or did a little jump. When license production of Fiat cars started in communist Poland in 1968, commie prime minister took one of the first cars for a spin over factory test track, sent the car airborne (there was a section of ramps that were supposed to be driven slower over to detect any issues with bodywork stiffness or interior fitting). Landing he crashed oil sump and was so pissed off he halted production until the weakspot issue is solved. From this point onwards all cars would get skidplates made of two steel profiles that allowed safe off-road driving and was used by police during chases, as these allowed factory cars to safely drive down stairs eg. in parks when necessary.

Valid question. To minimize bolster wear one places their rear on the middle of the bottom cushion and then rotates ones legs into the car. As opposed to legs first and then dragging across the bolster. Same thing when you get out- swing legs out, lean forward, stand up without dragging across the bolster. The key is making that first approach land you in the middle of the seat between the bolsters not sitting on the edge and sliding into the seat. I know....crazy OCD stuff ;)

A real expert wouldn’t require a paint gauge to distinguish between original factory and repaired/repainted panels, and he certainly wouldn’t confuse microns with millimetres. I was rolling on the floor when he straight faced made the comment that the Alfa’s fender paint was around 25 mils thick! :))))))))
@colincomer45662 жыл бұрын
Hi! As mentioned below to another viewer unfamiliar with how paint is measured in mils: "...in the U.S. the thickness of paint is expressed in mils as noted (not “millimeters” as that would be really thick!) One mil equals 1/1000 of inch just fyi. The rest of the world expresses coating thickness in microns (1 micron = 1 millionth of a meter and 25.4 microns = .001” inch or 1 mil)." As for being able to distinguish paintwork without a gauge, yes, after 37 years of doing body and paint, as well as inspecting thousands of paint jobs, yes it is true I don't require a paint meter either. But for the magical world of the Internet and our viewers it is the best way to illustrate things the camera can not convey here on KZbin. Hope this helps explain mils vs millimeters etc as well. Thanks for watching.
