Buttons have gone and they will stay gone. Simply because you save on the cost of the button, the cable to it and onto the ever more complicated wiring loom. Looms are made by hand and is one of the most expensive bits of any car. Less buttons means a cheaper loom. In this case, the appalling alternate software implementation that also dogged VW's EV offerings seems to have made their way into the rest of the line up. Lane keep assist has to be enabled by default by EU legislation - but the USA version might have this disabled?

This was BMW’s era of absolute perfection. The styling and handling haven’t been replicated since. You say “inspires confidence”, and that’s an understatement… I had a 2001 325xi wagon, and it was so stable in turns at speed that I shredded sidewalls on Nokians (twice). If a curve sign said 35mph, I knew I could do almost 70. No complicated infotainment, no flash, analog gauges, no touch screens, no iDrive, a bump shift that actually worked, direct analog steering, a responsive slant six, and timeless styling… I should’ve never have sold it.
