Visit my website at www.junglejoel.com - Nephelium lappaceum is commonly known in English as the rambutan. When in season, they arrive by the truckload. Thailand is the largest producer, where it is referred to as "ngo" (เงาะ). Rambutans store well in the refrigerator and are a non-climacteric fruit - that is, they ripen only on the tree.
Because they are often confused with lychees (Litchi chinensis), I draw a comparison between the two in this video.
Please rate and comment, thanks!

I love both lychee and rambutan, just find the fact that parts of the seed tend to stick to the flesh in rambutan and I'm not particularily fond of the woody taste and texture that adds to the innermost bits of flesh and thus I'm more fond of lychee.
@joelp63

+Arthion That's exactly why lychees tend to cost more and are considered more desirable than rambutan, those darn sticky fragile seeds!

The rambutan I bought dried up in the refrigerator within days... worthless for eating. They were delicious the first couple of days, but the ones I peeled later in the week were nearly hollow.

Hello! My name is Emily, and I was just wondering if it's okay to eat the seed of this fruit??? I have heard so many different theories as to whether it can kill you or not. My husband and I were eating some rambutan one day and we decided to each eat a half of one of the seeds, before we had ever heard they were bad for you, and nothing happened. I don't know if we just got lucky or if they are fine to eat. If you can eat them is there a limit? Like no more than five a day or you need to cook them beforehand?? . Thank you!

+Rafal Wosio I've heard some people eat the seeds of the rambutan fruit raw, or toasted - and often crushed. I've never tried eating the seeds myself though.

If you have a US Dollar translation on those prices I'd appreciate it. Both rambutan and lychee are very expensive here in NY, with limited seasons esp the lychee (basically two weeks worth if we're lucky)...would love to know what the cost is where you are, thanks.
