I strongly suspect people think they don't like scones in the US because they're the default stale-ass "see we have food" option at coffee shops, a good fresh scone is light and moist and flaky incredibly good but because they will stay technically edible way past when they're any good they get subjected to that cruel disservice. If a scone is hard or crumbly it's too late for that scone.
