Actually, bruxing is when they grind their teeth together! When the eyes are trying to escape that's called 'boggling'. They're closely related. The musculature and biology of a rat's head makes their eyes do that automatically when they brux enthusiastically. But if a rat is bruxing more calmly, they don't always boggle!

I’m reading a book series on some out of control AI nanotechnology; and the main guy has a super smart pet rat that is hyper intelligent; they talk about the rat’s behavior and emotions so much in this book, I had to look it up for myself, haha. Pretty decent series so far. You rat lovers would probably enjoy it. I think it’s called Upgrade, the Complete Human, or something like that. Cute little guy.

Before I had my boys and really knew anything about rats I initially thought that boggling was a little freaky, but now having had my little ratties I quickly learned to love their little boggles. They'd always boggle whenever I'd pet them or give them some treats. Even when I'd come home I'd see their little faces peering out from a hammock or their Sputnik and they'd already be boggling. I miss it a lot, but videos like this help ❤
