My dad had a terrifying experience with rats when he was a kid. My sister bought a rat when she was an adult, she named her Rosey, she was so sweet and calm. Dad was not a fan but he admitted she was sweet. My sister and niece have had several rats over the years and my dad has actually fallen in love with them! He will actually hold them and when the last one passed he actually cried because he was going to miss them. They are wonderful animals.

My friend's cat needed emotional support after her beloved dog sister, who she'd known all her life, died. So my friend got a dog from the shelter who needed a home and is of the same breed as the original dog, and the cat loves him dearly. She no longer freaks out when her owner has to leave for work and has stopped stress behaviors like grooming patches of herself until she goes bald. Just having him around helps a lot.

Recommending a rat as a pet is a difficult thing. Yes, they're adorable, smart, socially caring and loving but the downside is the short life span you mentioned. In the time of 2-3 years a rat becomes a superb friend and you can feel the love this tiny creature gives you. As a owner of - summed up- 11 rats in my life it was heartbreaking every time when one of my little fellows went to rat heaven. Really, who wants to see a grown up man like me cry like a baby?

It’s so super important to get at LEAST two rats if you have any at all. While rats are lovely and social with humans, they also need a friend of the same species, the same way people do. Since rats are so intelligent, they get bored very easily and need near-constant stimulation. They are high-maintenance animals so IF you get rats for your children, you MUST be their primary caretaker as MOST children don’t understand the depth and complexity of these small animals. Rats will get depressed if not cared for properly, and even commit suicide or kill their cagemates from extreme stress buildup. They’re the best pets I’ve ever had, but they are high maintenance.
@alexis1101
@alexis1101 3 ай бұрын
Additionally, you shouldn’t bathe rats unless they seriously need it. If they smell bad, you need to change their bedding as you’ve waited way too long. That, or it’s possible they have a wound, which you need to check them once a week for changes regardless. If their cage smell doesn’t improve within two to three days, take them to a vet. Sometimes our little friends need help with age, but if they’re young to middle aged, that could be indicative of a physical or even mental health problem. EVERY rat is different, so it is crucial for their health that you get to know them individually. Rats are prey animals, so if they’re physically hurt they will instinctively do their best to hide it, it’s nothing personal.

Rat breeder here. Thank you so much for shining some good light on rats, since they are some of the most amazing pets out there. However, I would recommend getting at least three rats, as science has proven that rats that are alone or living in pairs are extremely stressed (you may not necessarily see it though). Also, they should never be bathed. This is incredibly bad for them. They wash themselves and don't need to be bathed. Also, tiny bandana omg!
@josbud1112

very true. Rats unfortunately are the go to test subject in science, but due to this we have a very thorough understanding of rats and do not need to be bathed and require cage mates. Don't understand how people think differently with an uncountable number of scientific studies out there proving it true.

I like rats but I can't go near them since I've been bitten countless times when I cared for them in an animal park that had them. I know they don't bite when cared for properly but us students that worked there couldn't change their circumstance. But even rats that have had good care have bitten me and the fact I have a long bite list and can't tell when they will bite I am unfortunately scared of them
@josbud1112
@josbud1112 Жыл бұрын
@@Steephsis you can remedy this rather easy. If you take a metal spoon and put a liquid treat on it such as baby food. You then push the spoon through the bars of the cage. They will learn not to bite that way because if they bite a metal spoon it will be unpleasant but not damaging to their teeth. They will correlate the liquid treat with positives and also not to bite it, so you can then proceed with caution when you're comfortable putting some on your finger, and letting them lick it off. If any decide to bite you can make a eep like noise. Just something a little high pitch to let the rat know they hurt you.

As someone who got lucky enough to have rats as a kid specifically because my parents wanted me to learn early on not to be afraid of any rodents, they're probably some of the smartest and most friendly, human oriented animals you'll ever meet. A lot of people see their size and immediately think they'll be intelligent for their size at most, but no, I've had cats all my life and can confidently tell you rats are just as intelligent as cats or dogs, if not more so. They're also insanely personable and love to interact with humans, especially because they can get bored easily and love the mental stimulation we provide. You'll never meet two rats who are the same, but you'll also never meet a bad rat. Seriously, if you're thinking about an apartment pet or something, rather than getting a dog or cat who will be too large for the environment and be stressed out, get a rat with a cage you keep open when home. You'll be just as satisfied, have just as close of a relationship, and will honestly get even more mental stimulation out of a friendship with a rat than with other animals. Serious proof that size doesn't equal brains. I work with horses and while they're smart, on a human intelligence scale, rats run circles around them. Trust me and adopt a couple, and you'll immediately see how brilliant and human-like they are.

@@teeniequeenie8369 I agree. Our rats were never in cages, and they never chewed anything. In Jr. High I adopted a pet rat who lived almost until graduation. Anubis was a good friend who often took naps with me, and would ride on my shoulder whenever I was at home. He lived till he was about six years old; which is unheard of for rats, but as stated in the video, a good breeder will always make sure their pups have good genes. He gave me many years of comfort. I'm glad Benny is holding true to the name of good rodents everywhere.

I worry about people seeing videos like this and thinking they can bring a rat home to play with their dog, or thinking they should be giving their pet rats baths (which actually is not advised). I mean, seeing the dog with the rat is cute, but it really needs a “don’t try this at home” advisory. And that she mentioned getting rats from breeders, but neglected to advise adopting rats from rescues was a bit disappointing, but this isn’t a rat-specialty channel, so I can cut her some slack…

Ok first of all the "oh you are just projecting on your animal, they don't accsually need that" is just an excuse made by people who can and could take better care of their animals and make them happier but decide not to beacose they are either too lazy to ,they don't know how to read animal body language and understand animal social cues and vocalizations(the fact that those things differ from animal to animal dosen't help) or they don't understand the importance of mental-emotional health and how it works(or even belive animals don't have feelings and emotions in general, bad/negative/good/positive) or they don't pay attention to their animals and think that they live in bliss(false lots of animals suffer and have problems all of the time for lots of reasons some are caused by us and some not). Just beacose animals seem more content dosen't mean they are, animals can feel bad, have problems and be traumatized just like us, yeah sure the way we do it is more complex but it dosen't mean we are the only ones "The rats necesity to acompany the dog is in question" well a child dosen't have to sleep with a teddy bear to survive either but it is a preferance of theirs and if you pay attention you can see the dog preffered to be with the rat rather than without it even if the rat dosen't help with the dogs phisical health "Dogs can have a fucking shower and be ok" wrong, they don't enjoy it and they are clearly not neutral about it either, they dislike/hate it, and that is NOT what i would call being "ok" with something at all. Yeah sure the shower isn't going to kill/phisicaly hurt them, but that dosen't make it any more ok for them, as seen by their reaction) Edit: if people joke/hurt themselfs that dosen't mean they would do that to others beacose while outsiders can get mad at you but it's harder for you to get and at yourself, same thing about careing for or mistreating other members of our species vs members of other species, 2 wrongs don't make a right, and animals are like children(vulnerable)in many ways thats why people care about them so much.
@alexandramilos392
@alexandramilos392 Жыл бұрын
Being empathic towards animals dosen't stop people from being empathic towards other humans,(usually somebody who isn't empathic to animals won't be the best at empathy towards other humans either, and stopping from being empathic towards animals isn't going to make them more empathic towards humas, it will just stop them from haveing empathy towards animals and that's it)in fact it can help them learn how to use their empathy in a usefull nice way when they interact with other people, it can go the other way around too, and I woudn't say pets don't need our love/care/empathy as much as other humans, in fact they need even more .I never said the dog got traumatized by the shower, i said that dogs do and can get traumatized by things, that dogs are not ok with showers and they are unpleasent for them at the very least.(it was mentioned the dog in the video got traumatized as a puppy beacose it's nails got cliped the wrong way, im guessing they cut it's paw a little but idk, witch was extremly clear from that part of the video where she tried to clip it's nails,)The rat was supposed to, and got a bath, too and since it helps the dog be more calm(witch is better than if the rat wasn't there beacose it's better to feel more calm and therefore probably act more calm then to not, also again dogs usually don't like the shower and can react badly)in the shower i don't see your problem with the rat being there when the dog was takeing the shower. (Other then the fact that rats skin, from what i know, i might be wrong, is sensitive and can be damadged by soap, but don't quote me on that, im not a rat expert, i do know rats clean themselfs so they don't need a bath, unless they enjoy swiming)

It's definitely true about rats! They are so sweet, so affectionate, SO curious, way too smart, and they love their people with their whole tiny hearts. I've had one pet rat back in my youth, her name was Freya, and she lived an astounding 4 years. She was mostly free-range when I was home, always chilling with me wherever I was. If I decided to change rooms, she'd scurry up to my shoulder and give me a "go ahead" squeak in my ear. She'd even go outside with me! I'd lay out in the yard and read or draw and she'd explore and nibble on things nearby. All I had to do was pat the ground and she'd come bounding over to me. We had such a strong bond. After she passed, it wrecked me, I could never get another pet rat again. They have such short lives and they give you so much during their time with you, and even though I can't handle having another, I will always advocate for them being great pets. Also if you're interested in getting a pet rat(s), please also do your homework! They are pretty low maintenance but require plenty of enrichment, attention, and room to explore. And please be aware that sometimes rats will just develop benign tumors (Freya had 2), but they're usually easy for a vet to remove and the recovery for your little buddy will be quick and there should be no lasting complications.

This has to be the most ethology-affirming grooming I have ever seen. Never mind accepting the e.s. rat for a moment --just the fact that the groomer and the owner agreed that Sully didn't need to have EVERYTHING done at his first appointment, that's huge. I've read a lot of grooming customer reviews, and sure there's the odd complaint about a groomer giving the dog a ridiculous haircut or whatever, but the most common complaint is that some of the services were left undone or only partly done. And those complaints tend to paint the groomer as either lazy or too scared of dogs. Well, if the dog is literally trying to BITE because it is THAT opposed to whatever is happening, that should tell you something about the amount of stress its' feeling! Not only should a person earning relatively low wages for a specialized job not have to risk a trip to the e.r., the dog should not be made to endure something terrifying through brute force! That will just make it even harder the next time, and the next, and before you know it, you'll find yourself settling for having a filthy shaggy dog all the time, because the alternative is too much of a nightmare. Unfortunately, some groomers fold under the pressure of demanding clients and do whatever services they demand, whatever restraint is necessary, and that is so sad.

I will die for benny Also, just have to say, as a person that worked at rodent rescue And fostered dozens of rats for years - even tho rats are wonderful with kids - please don't buy a rat as a pet for a child below 10. Domestic rats are very fragile and kids can not know their strength. 80% of all discarded rats at my rescue that had permanently disabling injuries were victims of cruel or just not carefull children

Really do not agree with this. I'm someone who grew up constantly around animals and who was a very sensitive, over-gentle, empathetic child. It's not children, it's personality, plus parenting. I knew about death, knew how easy it was to hurt things, knew exactly what the consequences would be if I was careless from a very young age. A lot of people want to keep their kids innocent from those consequences or don't focus much on delicacy, and that's the problem here, along with low general exposure to animals that aren't treated like toys and decoration. It should be on a case by case basis. Rats taught me so much about death (from their short but meaningful lifespans) and intimacy with their sweetness and intelligence and I doubt I would've had such a rich childhood without them-- I love and was around all sorts of animals, but none left such a huge impact on me or relieved as much loneliness as rats. In general, I'd say pets should not be seen as a coming of age right, but a highly specific living entity that should match your child's needs as much as possible, not just be thrown at them because that's what you do, get a puppy or hamster or kitten, just Because It's Normal or out of envy for peers that have them. Mind you, even bigger animals get abused and abandoned and if they don't come out of it with injuries they'll come out of it with trauma that they have to live longer with in comparison to the rats.

this is correct: rats are very social animals, unlike most other rodents (that are kept as pets) who tend to be solitary. I think that all of the naturally more social animals tend to respond well to human interaction when kept as pets.

2:31 rat lifespan in captivity can DRASTICALLY be lengthened by giving them proper care. And for rats, that means recognizing that they are highly intelligent, highly social, highly curious beings. If they are not given challenges, puzzles, mazes, etc they will get bored and depressed. Same if they don’t have companions in other rats. Also,they NEED to be able to run around. This is why you must train a rat to be able to be out of a cage. They can easily be trained to. My brother would literally take his rat exploring in the woods and for long walks. He’d do his thing, then always come back when ready/called and climb up onto my brother’s shoulder. But you must also protect them from predators during these times, ans this could also look like letting them explore outside in a (truly) rat safe enclosure with an top to it. Just be advised no rat enclosure or cage is ever truly rat safe as they are little houdinis and also with outside enclosures they can dig etc, so must be watched every second they are outdoors. You must be right there with them at all times. They also really love to swim, and bathe in water, but also dusty sand/soil. They like to roll around in it, but again.. health hazards lol. Make sure they aren’t inhaling small dust all the time. Overall, they make incredible pets when you actually bond with them. And it takes work. It takes training. This is an animal that will be a companion. They need to build trust with you. I highly suggest anyone who hates rats actually meet one that is captive. It’ll change your entire perspective of them. You will be incapable of seeing them how you saw prior.
