Exciting news. Can’t wait to see the interview with Jeff Shaara. I just finished gods and generals. Love seeing the puppies. My Trudy is rearranging my bed covers while I am trying to watch your video. My chihuahuas that passed February a year ago one of which was always cold too. Great books as you always have. The civil war magazine looks really interesting. I am gonna check into it. I love reading about the wives.

I'm enjoying Athelstan by Tom Holland, a quick read. Looking forward to Barbara Tuchman's Notes from China, which is also a small book, more comfortable to deal with sometimes.

I am reading a Korda book right now. With Wings Like Eagles I will look for the book you recommended.

I'm reading Vagabond this month as part of a London Mayoral Election read. Alongside London-The Biography by Peter Ackroyd, London: A History in Verse edited by Mark Ford and some others. There's some excellent sounding books there. The Florence Nightingale one doesn't seem to have a UK publication date at this point, but I could be wrong. The Korda book I've put on my Remembrance Reads list. I've been focusing November on WW1 reading for the last four years and this - and the Medicine and the Great War - books are slotted in for that.

Peg, I love your content and your sense of humor. Lord help me, I have a blanket dog too. 😂 Butland!!!!🤣 I was a kid during the Cuban missile crisis and remember the tension and anxiety. Good luck with your interview with Jeff Shaara!

Love hearing about the books you have read and are currently reading!

Hey Peg! Been out of the book loop lately as I’ve focused most of my reading through the Bible (5th time since 1/1/23) …. Goal is 4 this year too. Also my love of books satisfied with my new hobby of Bookbinding & Bible Rebinding which is taking up most of my spare time. Did find a Scottish author , Peter May, and his “The Blackhouse” that I’m enjoying. But my reading goal is hurting as I had a goal of 120 and I’m sitting at 7.

Ben!! So great to hear from you again, friend! I am in awe of your Bible-reading discipline. Can you send some of that my way? I really need to re-prioritize a bit more...I love my book channel, but God comes first!!! I've just taken on a lot of review work lately, and my heart clamors for time to study and soak in the Word. It sounds like you've found a delightful balance...120 books is as nothing compared to 7 books and a life of peace and crafting contentment. Bookbinding sounds like such a soothing hobby. Maybe you could try filming some of your work?

Your thoughts on Reconstruction reflect mine on post WW2. I've been reading about the whole denazification process and I keep thinking it reminds me of Reconstruction. Hindsight right?!!

Florence Nightingale. I’ve been curious for some time about her. I once heard someone comparing her to Margaret Thatcher. And what I heard she wasn’t better at keeping people alive in her hospital than others. So I’m really curious if this view is correct or not.

Her efforts to vastly improve sanitation saved more lives than more people can count, I'm sure. She did have a prickly side, but my opinion is she was a force for good for her patients rather than not.

@@TheHistoryShelf A bit late, but I have to come back to this post. I remembered that I saw this man in a Dutch documentary make this statement. So maybe it's a Dutch male thing. We have Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer who was a very important figure in the 80-year war we had with the Spanish. She led the revolt against the Spaniards in Haarlem. Although she was older than Joan of Arc you can say she was the Dutch Joan of Arc. Now the French adore Joan of Arc and are very proud of her. But what do we do? We've made Kenau's name a swearword. Before I knew who she was, I knew that the name Kenau was someone who was very unpleasant. I wish we stop doing that thing. Having to have kind female heroes. No, we can't have the ones that have the same qualities as male heroes.

I sure haven't...and looking it up, I see it's kind of hard to find. Looks good, though!
