A real challenge | Pioneer AXD7660 remote repair

Repairing a Pioneer AXD7660 receiver remote control with circuit board damage. This is one of the more challenging repairs I have done, and required the use of 0.1mm enameled wire and a lot of patience.

Nice job.👍👍👍 I got an old Nintendo controller working on a fast job, many years ago, by super gluing alfoil to the pads. The owner tried it and then dropped the other controller in, even though it still worked, because the increased performance difference was quite noticeable.

yeah these pads usually do the same, seems to "lighten" the keys up quite a bit.

I have the same remote, and the volume buttons stopped working as well. I opened the remote, cleaned with a Q tip and isopropanol, and used tiny pieces of conductive copper tape to cover the black carbon fiber ovals on the volume buttons (I didn't have carbon fiber tabs on hand). It's working great!

A couple of tips, never use anything metal to split the case open, always use plastic, there's plenty of tools you can buy online for this exact purpose, you can wash everything except the PCB in Windex over the sink, I use an old tooth brush for this purpose, use IPA at least 99% and a cotton tip to clean the contacts on the PCB and rather than using conductive pads, you can use a grey lead pencil to colour in the pads on the rubber sheet and also the PCB.

The reason I got to the metal spudger is the plastic ones broke. Valid points, I'm aware of all of them. grey lead doesn't work over the top of circuit board enamel. when a remote has been chewed by a dog like this, it's well beyond the pencil fix -which is usually temporary for the most part.

Two days ago I cleaned my lx-cs57 avr’s remote… hooleee it was dirty inside! I bought the system from a friend and he is fond of chips and beer! 😂 Hardest part was to open it and closing it back up because the middle round selector has to be seated in a specific way. The volume and other buttons are generally very hard to make contact, but I attribute that to bad designing by Pioneer.

Very helpful video. I was having the same problem on the same remote (no volume). Luckily, my board wasn't damaged, like that one. However, I didn't have any carbon pads, so I cut some out of an old remote and glued them in. Worked out great, on the first try.

Not saying you did, but are you sure you didn't damage that board yourself when you were trying to open it before removing the screw? It made a horrible crunching noise when you were trying to open the clips on that side. that being said, this helped me open mine - I'd actually removed the screws but didn't know about the clips, so thanks. I saw the grease on the board volume contact so just cleaned them with some meths. Works perfectly now

Yes the same thought crossed my mind in the years since posting this, bit the cracks did correlate with the teeth marks from the dog chew marks. I was informed that worse crunching sounds came out of it at the time of damage. So it could be hard to know.

@@TheAussieRepairGuy Not really hard to know! You show the IR led working before disassembly - if the board was already cracked, the LED woldn't work :)

@@ljalvs when cracked the led still worked, just not on all buttons, which was the original complaint. Spoke to the owner after filming, it had been dog chewed, but I agree neglecting that screw likely didn't help matters.

If you are testing any IR remote, they can be seen on most cameras yes.

hi mate, i have a kenwood decoder/audio video control system and my remote is identical. i am also having problems with my up volume button and I am having trouble getting the clips to open plus i have already removed the screw in the battery compartment, what would be a good tip for me to open it up without damaging it?

If you are having trouble with the clips, you might be trying to pry up the wrong side of the shells. Its a bit of a skill. But these ones as you saw from the video are challenging to get open. Don't rush, take your time, and be gentle. Start half way down one side.

I just took my remote apart, same pioneer remote. Volume buttons weren't working good. Cleaned the board and buttons w a qtip. Then closed it back up. Now it doesn't work at all. What's happening?

it may need time to properly dry out before reassembling but I'd check to see if any tracks are broken or the carbon coating on the circuit tracks was not scrubbed off. The LED on the board has steel legs, these are easy to stress and can snap without being obvious.

@@kvnmcn With a bit of "gentle persuasion" aka bending, they can usually be put back, but be careful not to mess up the circuit board when doing it

Hi everyone I'm using a pioneer vsx 2016av-s amplifier which I bought as a second hand it didn't come with the remote so I bought a second hand pioneer axd7690 I believed it would've worked but it didn't...could the remote be damaged or just isnt compatible...suggested remote for the amplifier was AXD7619 but they just look similar to the one I have but it isn't working....help me guys

I'm not sure I can be much help and I'm not an expert on these amplifiers specifically. I do know that they changed the code strapping of each remote drastically between models. I'm not sure what else I can do for you.

Hi, I have this one, and I have an issue wanting to play sound from a device connected to the "audio" input (red +white), but can't figure out how to click on the remote control to switch to that. It only switches between BD, DVD, CD, SAT/CBL, GAME, TV, Tuner. Not sure what more to do. Can you help?

Not really, as I was only handed the remote to fix, not the complete unit. Off memory, these have lots of inputs, each one has a marking on the back to indicate which mode they are associated with. Also I think there's a "phono" mode as well.

And because we also had a HDMI tho the other dvd input, no sounds was from this one. But I found a button on the remote that changes between these two, so the problem was solved. I have a Philips remote with tv, disc, tuner, aux functions, but some bottons work on some functions but not with other, when i have it on disc the ir light turns on when pressing all buttons, but with tv, tuner, aux the arrows and ok buttons dont work, wondering if thats normal.

There was a hidden screw in this one, under the label, and another in the battery bay.

I was at it again tonight. This time I washed everything with warm water and dishwashing liquid. I used cotton tips to surgically dry every little nook. Volume control - fixed On/ off button - fixed Mad scratches and cuts almost cutting my skin from trying to pry open the remote - fixed (I used my nail filer and buffer) Thanks so much for this video

Yeah they certainly cheaped out on the PCB thickness. Would have expected that pioneer would spend an extra dollar on the PCB considering what the gear is worth.
