Around 1:33:03 - Police utilize snipers for counter terror units, SWAT, etc. They are specialized officers to take down hostage takers, etc. Yes, originally, they were trained by the military because snipers were only in the military at first. Same with the bearcat which police SWAT uses, its an armored car to help with dangerous suspects (barricaded, etc).

30-06 just means it's a 30 caliber round adopted in year 1906. 30 caliber is basically 0.30 inches around. So it's a bullet a little less than a third of an inch around that they started using in 1906. And an "8 power scope" just means that at it's maximum zoom, objects appear 8 times larger than with the naked eyes. So just basically you can see 8 times further than if you were just looking with nothing. Hope this helps.

@@Ender-bg2hxI mean it’s not all that different in bullet diameter than a .308, which can still penetrate Level III plates with enough rounds on target. A .30-06 would likely have the same effect on target, given the slight increase in bullet weight and casing length roughly make up for each other.

Hes not wrong about the military getting rid of great units during peace times. The unit I was in during my time in the Army was created to be a long range reconnaissance patrol unit. Shut down after WWII. Brought back for Vientam, closed it down and then I was one of the first 10 soldiers to come and help stand it up again in 2010. We got to meet 2 WWII vets that where in the unit back then and that was so cool to meet them and show them what we are working with now.

The US Military in particular had a really nasty habit of liquidating the military almost entirely right after a conflict ended, this had catastrophic repercussions when a new conflict would start. I think it was after WW2 where we finally started to change that idiotic decision. Invicta has a cool video related to this topic. "How Did the US Navy Get So Powerful? - Evolution from the 13 Colonies to WWII" is the title of the video.

A Shooter's Log (Sniper) keeps the details of each shot. Distance, Angle, Wind, Atmospheric Conditions, Scope Adjustments etc. Its how you refine your long range shooting. Not that ut matters, but seat belts (per your comment) were not required in vehicles until 1968. My '66 F100 came without them.

This "us not getting any medals in shooting" thing needs to stop. The thing the US didn't get medals in was for AIR RIFLES. US got the gold in skeet shooting AND silver, Silver in Rifle three positions, and silver in team skeet shooting. We don't care about air rifles, and air pistols.

@@MrJlee93 It's just really weird that the us doesn't do well in them since it's really not much different than shooting a real gun for how you do it there's just less recoil and a lot of people in the us end up starting out with like an air powered pellet gun. Like an airgun doesn't feel that much different to shoot than like a .22 especially a .22 short so it would seem like it would transfer over other bigger rifles better

I'm sure I'm not the first to answer, but I'm gonna because I love talking about it. When it comes to rifle calibers, it really doesn't get more American than .30-06. The name of the round is in reference to it's caliber, .30 (or 30/100ths of an inch) and the year it was introduced (1906). It served as the standard US military rifle cartridge for both World Wars and in Korea. In the 1950's and 60's, most militaries began transitioning to smaller cartridges such as the 5.56mm so that weapons would be more controllable on full automatic and soldiers would be able to carry a lot more ammo. This rendered full power cartridges such as .30-06 largely obsolete for military use. The .30-06 continued to be popular as a hunting cartridge. As far as hunting cartidges go, there's better ones for specific characteristics such as range, stability, kinetic energy etc., however .30-06 is a great "jack of all trades" round that has solid performance in just about every category you look at.

Fun fact the guys they send to scout sniper platoon that haven't finished the course and aren't quote "snipers" yet are PIGs or Professionally Instructed Gunmen. When they officially become "snipers," they are given a HOGs tooth, which is a 7.62x51mm round, because the most common round used out of the M40 rifle. They then known as a HOG (Hunter Of Gunmen)

00:22 No no, Chris Kyle "American Sniper" is a legend and an American hero for sure, and has a record for most CONFIRMED kills in the army I believe or mabey over all. He's ONE of the best snipers of all time for sure. But Carlos "white feather" Hathcock jr. is THE sniper. The greatest of all time. He had about as many CONFIRMED kills as Chris Kyle did even though they put extra stipulations on him and his team that no other soldier ever had to follow for a kill to be considered "confirmed". By any other standard in military history for confirming kills, Carlos would have had hundreds, well more than 300. He was the BEST shot, MOST dedicated to perfecting his craft, making shots so insane that people refuse to believe they happened no matter how credible the witnesses, did most of his wildest work with trash hunting rifles and shity ammo the military through together for them as an after thought, oh and one other kind of important factor, he did all these things already planting him as the g.o.a.t., but he did it all BEFOR snipers were even a thing. Jim Land literally BUILT the first sniper school program based on Carlos and under Carlos'instruction, and this FIRST attempt at a sniper program would become the most revered sniper school in the U.S. military, after 59 years it has barely changed at all and in the world today all top tier sniper programs in the WORLD at minimum have been formed with major influences from this man. As I said befor, Carlos Hathcock is THE sniper. And the father of modern sniping.

The police thing; he’s saying that sniping went from a Matine thing to being taught in the other branches of the military, and also trickled down into law enforcement. Obviously not as strictly trained as military snipers, but some get trained as snipers for more accurate, precise shooting

Honestly, the scope shot must've been the most insane shot he took, but I guarantee that killing Apache was the most satisfying shot. I mean, think about it. Cobra only killed one guy. He shot at John Burke as well, but he only killed one guy from the camp. Apache took multiple people, civilians mostly, even tho they probably weren't actually helping the US forces, and tortured them to death for all the marines to hear. Not only that, but Carlos's moral code is literally "I go into the danger so others don't have to" and that's being completely bypassed by some heartless witch? If i were him, I'd be angry too. Hell, I might've punched Jim Lan for the rifle to take the shot when they were wrestling for the gun

Idk if anybody has already said this in the comments but I'm pretty sure Carlos was saying that his kill shot on Apache was his best shot and not the shot that went through the scope, is because that Apache kill shot was extremely personal to him since she tortured and killed a fellow Marine

Plenty of villages left in the US, unincorporated too. The US is gigantic...and the majority of the populace lives on the coasts. There's vast, vast expanses of middle America that are straight up wilderness. Hell, there's even vast expanses of wilderness in highly populated States, look at Texas for example.

Bro I live 20 min from Houston in a village called Crosby that just got bumped up to town ship. No police of our own only Harris county. No mayor no city road workers. It has its ups and downs but honestly mostly ups. We also have Barrett station down the road. There’s cove east of us a ways too. All volunteer firemen and ems.. I liked it. Now I’m in a ‘city’ just east of Houston and I hate this place lol the city messes up more than it fixes. We can do less to our house here. We have less freedom of travel here. I miss my village lol

I imagine you live in a city. A huge amount of us live in the country. We all grew up with guns. Hunting. We all know our weapons. We usually get our first oellet gun at 4. Then we get a .22. By 8-10, we are hunting deer, rabbit, pheasant, hogs... We shoot our dads pistols along the way. By the time we are about 18. Most of us can and have shot about every gun around. We probably own 10 guns by then. We travel a couple times a year to go elk hunting, bear ... At the same time weve been getting real good at bow hunting. So, we take this very seriously. A shot at a buck at 600 yards is frequent. So speak for yourself when you say Americans don't know about guns, chief
