The news reels were used then, like trailers are used today. Special Forces, AKA Green Berets are the Army special warfare operators, along with Rangers, Detachment Delta, AKA Delta Force. MARSOC would be the Marine equivalent to Army Special Forces, as would SEAL for the Navy and Combat Controllers and Pararescue for the Air Force. Even though they are separate branches, they often work together. It is not uncommon for SEALs, SF and Delta to have a Combat Controllers assigned to them and they do operations together. The Purple Heart is the oldest US military award and one of the oldest still active military awards in the world. It is awarded for being wounded in a combat action and you can get it awarded multiple times for injuries sustained through multiple combat actions. Staff Sergeant Albert Ireland, USMC, was awarded NINE separate purple hearts. And yeah the Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest US military award, it is so revered that an officer will salute an enlisted CMH winner.
@Snipergoat12 ай бұрын
Most of those groups that you listed did not exist in WWII. Back then airborne troops were still experimental and the predecessor to the SEALs where called frogmen and they pretty much stuck to swimming to a beach then sneaking in to blow some things up and buggering off. This was usually done to clear the way before an assault. They would sometimes leave little signs for the Marines, who prided themselves on being the first to set foot on enemy held shores. They would storm a beach only to find a little sign that said something like "Welcome to Iwo Jima Marines signed, UDT12" Yeah the various branches have always enjoyed tweaking each other noses.

My father was doing applying and training for his Green Beret entrance exam during the late 90's, but retired early to be present for my birth not so much by his own choice but because my mother was basically demanding that he retired so he could raise me instead of being away on deployment and possibly dying. The year after I was born 9/11 happened and many of my father's friends from the Army deployed some of which did go SF.
