Hi Paul I’ve bought 2 of your books and I really enjoy the practicality of your videos. When you say implement iso9001 is it inferring to pdca cycle and the 7 quality tools or is there anything else in particular. Another question, what are the tools involved in managing/forecasting supply chain. I saw a glimpse of this in one of your videos and I’ve been trying to find it.

Implement ISO9001 what kind of suggestion is that? The exact same type of suggestion I have heard from senior management for years working as a contractor, which is the reason why I work as a contractor. Great context Paul will be buying your 'Drink and Tea and Read the Paper' book shortly.

Hi Paul new subscriber here Have you any idea about How contribute six sigma and statistical process control with data analytics field cuz l wanna reposition my career from in process control specialist to data analytics
@paulallen53212 жыл бұрын
Ahmed - you can certailnly use the principles of SPC on any process data. Run chart histogram, mean and median are all good tools to use in the analaytical field...

Hi Paul, Love the videos thank you very much! One observation/question:- in your example you denote a process in chaos and another in control. You state that the process in chaos contains just random variation. If this is the case, in my opinion that process is in control, you may not like what the output is and therefore you would look at the inputs you alluded to. Perhaps, because you present run charts for good simple reasons the distinction is not clear I.e. the limits are not being used to filter the random from the excessive. My definition of chaos is a process with special causes I.e goes on walkabout. You use the terminology “chaos” to infer that the current process is stable/consistent/in control but doesn’t meet the specifications. Am I correct?

Geraint - you are being technically correct from a text book point of view. I guess I'm trying to be more practical. Chaos in my explanation means I need to control Std Deviation, but a problem with control means I have an issue with the mean. The reason I put it like this is because the technician when he twiddles a dial is usually only in control of the mean and not the std deviation, which is so much harder to effect. So your explanation is totally correct from an SPC text book, as a consultant sometimes you have to abandon the text book to get people to understand and see the value in a tool they don't use...

Hi Paul, thanks for the reply, I totally understand where you are coming from. I guess the only thing you need to watch is that if the process is in control it’s doing the best it can, if that isn’t good enough then it is, as you say,a time consuming effort to effectively squeeze the std deviation. I have found that it’s always better to construct the process behaviour chart so that you can tell definitely if there are signals or not. It’s not always clear from a run chart that there are signals so the uninitiated would act on something they would have classed as an outlier or even out of tolerance. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Hi Geraint - I do something slightly different. I know Wheeler recommends using a control chart very early. Personally I do a cpk analysis with 40 consequtive pieces. That way I remove all the variation and can see the 'natural' process. Also on my problem solving flow diagram 'control' does not mean stable and predictable in the SPC sense. It means you know all your inputs and how to control them. It's practical phrase not a statistical one....control to me is practical, just because a process is stable doen't mean you know what you're doing. It could be luck! My flow diagram says ' do you know all the inputs and how to control them' that is real control on a day to day basis...
