It's so crazy that our buy-in at Southbridge Towers Apartments co-ops in lower Manhattan was $1300 in 1974, and our 1-bedroom rent was $350/mo. Our 2-bedroom was $450. Those same units are now priced at just under a mill.
@mohuyakhan2 ай бұрын
wow that almost sounds unbelievable!! that's why if you have a grandparent or relative that passes down those apartments to you now, you're basically set for life. wish those prices were still available now 😢

getting catfished by apartments is sooooo real. the current place i live in - i pretty much got catfished by the pictures i saw online. i have 3 other roommates and they are the ones who saw it in person and decided to rent it, and i could not visit it beforehand. so i ended up having the worst room with a window facing another building’s wall and i literally get zero sunlight in the daytime and have to keep the lights turned on all day. it’s hella depressing and i absolutely hate it here. 😖 i can’t wait for the lease to end so i can move out! and thank you so much for all the wonderful tips

Love to see the different places and prices. Don't worry girl, the places that rejected you aren't that cute and you definitely most likely got the place that was meant for you and your journey. All that is for you will have the doors open. Love the first apartment! Super cute and love the staircase.

Still in the middle of the video, watching at 13:40 mark -- if it's not mentioned already, no landlord/management can charge first/last/security fee. As of June 2019, they can only charge a maximum of the first month's rent and the security deposit. Even the security deposit can't be more than the monthly rent.

Thank you so much for giving a real breakdown on what it’s like to rent in NYC. This was VERY helpful! I really appreciate this. Please keep giving us more real NYC living experiences. I’m an average earner so this was a more realistic take on living there

@ellemay97402 ай бұрын
@@mohuyakhan Yes, a part 2 sounds great! You mentioned seeing a lot of places that didn’t make it into the first video-maybe include those? Also, how did you budget for your move? I’ve heard about costs like first month, last month, security deposit, and broker’s fees (I think that's unique to NYC)-are there any other expenses to consider? What was your timeline from applying to approval, and how far in advance would you recommend starting the search? And most definitely a tour of your new beautiful apartment! CONGRATS by the way on your new place! 🥳🎉

Loved this video. Great tips! 'No Broker's Fee' absolutely does not mean there is something wrong with the building, area, etc. Many native NY'ers do not pay Broker's fees. I don't know any who do. An apartment that is listed for $3500 will cost somewhere between $10,500 and $13,700 to move into with a standard 1-month (or 13% of the annual rent) broker's fee. This money can better be spent on Iced Coffees! Enjoy your new space!

Hi, Mohuya. Astoria has been a desirable area ever since I heard about it a long time ago. It appears it continues this reputation in Queens. Obviously there is cost assciated with nicer things in life. As your business grows and your income as well you will eventually be able to move into these better apartments and more scenic and more socally active areas.

This is the first time I've seen you on KZbin and I really enjoyed the way you walked us through your process of apartment hunting! One thing I did want to say though, through half of the video you had your cup & straw blocking your mouth and hearing impaired people depend on being able to lip-read/speech-read (the auto-captions block the visuals and often are incorrect anyway). Just a tip for being accessible to a wide audience 😊 Can't wait to see part 2!!

The catfishing is so real 🤣 When I was moving 2 years ago I looked at so many apartments that were more dark than the photos showed. A big one for me was natural light as a must. The apartment I landed in ended up being a gem but they did require a 700+ credit score as one of the criteria and were more leaning to a family/long term tenant which was perfect for us. TIP: If you can bunch viewing in one area it is a great way to save you some time, especially if you have to travel to the area. The google maps is also a tip I would give as well. There are many times I like an apartment on a listing but once I google mapped the area realized it would not work for me.

This took me back during my own hunt for an apartment in Queens. I got scammed out of a good faith deposit in FH/RP, saw a small closet masquerading as a studio in Elmhurst and an unfinished space in Sunnyside gardens before landing my current space in Woodside/Astoria (been here 2+ years).

can you make a video on like moving to new york. here in FL I can’t do apartment tours. I would like to be giving some kind of guide to know how that process would go when having to do that all online.
@Movieman19652 ай бұрын
Mohuya, what is the final monthly rent for your new apartment? I ask because I'm looking for my daughter (21 yo). Currently we rent AirBnBs near the music studio. But that's $4K per month for 6 month stays. I know rent is lower over in Queens and Brooklyn.

I live in Astoria not super far from Astoria park, so love seeing how much you like the neighbirhood. A few tips for this neighborhood: if you have a car, really look into the parking situation because parking is hard in most of Astoria; come by an hour before your appointment to go to some nearby restaurants and walk around to see how everything resonates; and see how far you are from one of the main streets (Ditmars, Steinway, etc.) because that's where a lot of the best restaurants/activity is. Also, just generally if you want to stay in your apartment longer, factor in your ability to afford the place with what the rental increase might be. You can get a sense by asking, but also checking the listing price history on StreetEasy. It’s such a great neighborhood, so if you can leave yourself some money to enjoy it on the weekends.

Oh wow, an apartment right next to the train, so you don't even need a metrocard, you just jump on from your balcony!!! Seriously, that would be a nightmare! Being nearby the subway is way different from seeing it outside your window. EEK! I'm a native NYer and gotta say most of these places, their requirements and rates are awful its such a turn off. You had a great attitude about it - as an entrepreneur I'm wondering if you tell them that you work for a company and pay yourself on a payroll or as a sole proprietor

Jah & Jahes love. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, my favorite place in New York City. I feel that my dream place to live is to buy an old factory, school, or warehouse and turn it into a loft living and workspace. I think that you should consider looking into renting or buying a loft because it is an open space that fuels your creative energy. I would love to buy one of your dresses someday soon. (I hope and pray that they are suitable for vegans and ecologically conscious consumers like me). i keep seeing apartment hunting guides that claim to be affordable and realistic but they usually aren't. $3,500.00 is too high. the average salary in NY is under $70,000.00. Income should be 3x the rent... with that in consideration, the average person can afford $1,800.00/month. minimum wage in NY is $16/hour, so min. wage full time workers can afford ~$850.00/month.

I paid close to $1800 just for a studio apartment and it wasn't even in Manhattan, so this video shows a similar range for what apartments are like on a lower-mid end
