This may sound awful…… but the fact that you cried makes me feel SO much better. I watch you because I feel isolated in motherhood at times. I cried this morning over something “normal” my toddler did, but it made me question myself as a mother. Thank you for sharing this with us. ♥️

I know we don’t know each other at all but just the fact that you are there for your kid and loving them and doing whatever you possibly can to keep them safe and loved you are doing an amazing job as a mother and your kids will get to the point in life where they come to you and say thank you so much for not giving up on me mom I can’t tell you how many talks I’ve had with my parents about being sorry about things I’ve done and the stress I’ve had them go through

You did the right thing with Riley! You gave her love, comfort, time, and space to try to calm down. You held the boundary and then gave consequences! Honestly I would have cried too. Even though tantrums are normal and healthy for kids, it’s still hard to go through as the parent too. Deep breaths mama! There will be more moments like that but you will get through them!

I’m so glad that you opened up and shared that story about Riley as moms we have all had those hard moments. My 3 and half year old had a tantrum at soccer a few months ago and my husband and I had the same reaction of what do we do. But we did the same thing and took him home, explained to him why, and he went to timeout. Every situation is different and every kid is so different but there’s no wrong way to parent it’s just in that moment making a choice and knowing that you made the decision you thought was best at that time.

Aww 😢 I’m so sorry you had that moment with Riley and her tantrum, I feel for you. You did the right thing, no matter how you handled that situation, it would have been right. Kids will have their emotional breakdowns sometimes and we just have to do what we have to do. ❤️

That experience with Riley was so hard. It's not just you. I don't know a single parent, including me, who hasn't gone through that at least once. I taught kids for 13 years and the number of parents who would come to me and say I don't understand, every time it's time to leave its a huge fight to get here, then once they're here they love it. What do we do? Essentially you do the exact formula you did. You give the kid a heads up that it's almost time to leave and do xyz, have them clean up or help clean up what they were doing (helps them understand that activity is done, especially kids under about 7), take them to do the thing, remind them the other activity will still be there when you get home again, give them several opportunities to make the choice themselves to go in, (and especially little kids that probably means finding ways to make that offer less hard, like you saying you'd go in with her and watch her) and if the meltdown continues, take them out of public eye, let them get their emotions out, and then talk to them when they're calm again about why their behavior wasn't ok and what expressing those feelings better could have looked like. *shrugs* you did it all right. ESPECIALLY the part where you and Joe both talked to her together once she was calm about why her actions weren't OK. A lot of parents forget the calm conversation afterwards part and it's the most important if you want to make meaningful change. And telling her no to her extra requests that night and reminding her her behavior that day didn't earn the fun extras is important too. It helps build the brain connection that some things are earned bonuses and not things they're entitled to because they exist. Mine had his biggest meltdown at the dermatologist. He was tired before we went because he refused to take his nap, so I knew it wasn't going to be an easy visit. But I brought a toy car, some books and had his show pulled up on my phone to help him get through this. It didn't matter. He wanted nothing to do with it. And the office was running behind schedule so we had a long wait before it was even our turn. And I had to get blood drawn that day too. The crying and trying to pull me out the door started before we even got called back. The dr and I were almost screaming at each other to be heard over him. He decided to grab my arm and yank on me over and over the entire time we trying to get the blood drawn, and would not stop, so we had to reschedule that for the next week. They were taking my blood pressure (I was on a strong medication and these tests were to make sure my body was handling it ok), and my normal blood pressure is pretty low. At this point my child had been increasingly getting louder and more hysterical for almost an hour and a half, and my blood pressure was in the danger level. The Dr and the nurses actually had to get together and debate whether I needed to come off the medicine or was my child fully responsible for that high pressure. And then, when we were getting out the door, he ran BACK in the waiting room and shoved several chairs over. This is so different than he'd ever acted before. And I was exhausted, in pain, fed up, embarrassed and upset because now it was actually time to leave NOW I can't get him out the door?!?! I apologized profusely and had to carry him out kicking and screaming like an absolute maniac all the way to the car. Everyone I passed did that judgemental stare. Then I had to physically restrain him to buckle him in his car seat! He passed out not even a MINUTE into the drive back home. Face covered in tears and snot. I promptly cried too. Sometimes these things happen. In my case I couldn't reschedule the appointment because he couldn't handle it that day. We had to stick it out. It was miserable. We know his triggers snd we do our best not to push him past his limits. Being super tired is his biggest one. He had a similar melt down in the grocery store a couple times. We checked out with what we had when it started and went home immediately and finished shopping the next day. It's never easy to go through that. But you do what you can. Sometimes that means giving up and going home because their too overwhelmed by their feelings to cope in that moment. Sometimes you have you to stick it out, and you try your best to help them calm down. And sometimes that doesn't work. You did the right thing, and with the right motivations. And sobbing afterwards is completely fine too. 🙂 Edit: another important thing is every new day is a clean slate. You can't make progress with a child by holding onto what they did yesterday and treating them like that the next day. It may mean dealing with those same meltdowns many times in a row. Or every other time. But every day is a clean slate. That's how kids learn the best. Adults too, but man you can royally mess up a child by saying things like "I heard you had a bad attitude last time. We're not going to have that same problem today, ARE WE?

13:40 For the cake pops, add a small amount of coconut oil (melted if the solid kind) to the white chocolate to keep it smooth for longer before it eventually sets.

My one year is very smart and very strong willed and she started throwing tantrums mostly in public. It’s hard but you did the right thing. What I do is try my hardest to diffuse the tantrum before it starts. Once it starts there’s not much you can do except for to let it blow over and get out of the public place. I don’t do discipline or try to reason with her until it’s over. The way it was explained to me is there’s the thinking brain and emotional brain and once the tantrum starts the your child has to get through and get over with your help.

In my opinion you did the right thing with Riley ❤️ I know it was hard and confusing but you took her from dance where she caused the scene and put her in time out to show her that she doesn’t get to go do what she wanted when she gets back home so that shows her acting that way will not get her what she wants when mom says no not right now and you also explained to her why all that happened.

Be gentle on yourself. You were trying to teach her to follow through with commitments, and she usually has a good time, so your judgment was appropriate. Extra kudos especially for not letting her do the cake pops once you got home, or you would have rewarded the fit. Good on you too for understanding that what she felt was age appropriate. Sometimes that helps me not be frustrated with my little ones (same age). Even though it doesn't change how we should handle it, empathy for their perspective can help us feel positive feelings for them quickly once they get control of themselves.

I took my 2-year-old for 12 sessions of toddler-mommy dance class and she cried and made a scene in about 11 of those sessions! Had me pick her up and jump around with the other toddlers every single time until I was sweating and hyperventilating (she is tall and pretty heavy). When we finally got in the car after each session, she wanted to go back to the class. The key to survival is to know it’s just a short phase in their and our life and not to be embarrassed in public because all toddlers have meltdowns and all moms know how it is! ❤️

I won't ever forget the day we did NOT go to swim lessons. One child decided to not put on their shoes... it was hard, but no one got swim lessons that day. And no "privileges" a real learning day. Children really will be wild hooligans if we never set expectations. That's how we grow up into adults. 😉

I think there’s many ways to deal with that situation with Riley. I think you did great Kayla ! You gave her many options and opportunities to calm her self down and when she didn’t you stuck to it. Being that she loves dance class I think she’ll think twice next time because she won’t want to miss out. Also you didn’t allow her to make the cake pops that day and shows her screaming & crying isn’t going to make her get her way! So all in all I think you did great. And I feel you, when my kids are extra difficulties just cry sometimes !!

Oh man, been there, done that with the tantrums. My son could put other kids to shame with the length of the tantrums. He has HFA, and was very frustrated at not being able to communicate with me. He loved his swimming lessons, and if I was distracted putting his wet clothes back in the bag, he’d take off running, fully dressed, and go back in the pool. I chased him, 8 1/2 months pregnant, while people just stared. I carried this screaming kicking toddler to the car. Got him in the car seat, I rolled down the car windows, sat down on the curb and burst into tears. It gets better, trust me. Riley is a little CEO in the making!

Food coloring can make the chocolate get hard. There is a certain food coloring that will work with it. I think oil based? Also, the bigger the cake pop, the more likely it'll fall off the stick since it is heavier ;)

Hey momma ! Whenever we made cake pops I actually did not put them on the stick until after they were iced . After icing then I put them in the fridge for awhile and then added the sticks! My son is the same age as Jackson, born December 12th 2019 and he really throws tantrums in public. 🥴 it is hard to know what is best to do, but I would have done the same as you. It is hard to reason with a 2 year old when they are having a tantrum so we usually have to leave. I hate to always give him his way, because that I feel will make him worse. He will just tantrum when he wants something. Thank you for sharing!!

I dont like exercising either, I only like dancing, maybe zumba or like aerobics type of exercise and it gets you moving and its fun! Buuuut- that being said, between work, housework, kids… I mean if we cant finish cup of coffee in peace in the morning and finish it in the night?! Who are we kidding…. Your a great mom don’t doubt your discipline! My son is VERY strong willed too my suggestion would be to get a like chores chart for her and one one the things is having good behavior for that day and my som was also in soccer ans we had a day like that and I made him sit on the bleachers with me and we watched about 15mins and then he said he wanted to participate so I let him Go and play the rest of soccer. It’s so easy to doubt ourselves as moms but we are doing a great job we are raising strong willed children who are going to great things in this world 😆

And I have to keep my house tidy or my brain hurts haha. I think the fact that you provided a consequence for Riley is important. There are a million ways to discipline and parent but the one thing that's the same for all the 'methods' is you need consistency. If you want them to clean up after themselves make them do it every.single.time. If you want them to speak respectfully keep asking them to try again with respect until they do. etc etc. Parenting is like exercise, if it were easy we'd all be awesome at it haha.

i think removing her was good, she wasnt necessarily "bad" for feeling what she felt, it was just hard not being able to do something she really was excited about. try to not take it personal, help her identify what shes feeling, and then ask her do you need a few minutes to cool down or i know its hard to not be able to work on the cake pops right now , you must feel so sad, what can you do to feel better ? these are all suggestions, it works with my kids, most of the time they want their feelings ackowledged

Mine always seem to meltdown at Publix grocery store. They fight over the wheel carts (even though they both have one but they're not the same). My just turned 4 year old had the biggest meltdown about the lady not giving her enough stickers for all her friends. I was getting so flustered that I put 6 things in my cart without paying for it! Love these vlogs, I think parenting will always be trial and error you can't really go wrong. I question myself lately often. My daughter has barely been anywhere and she has been having tantrums at home she is 21 months and I am dreading the day I have to handle one in public but hey we handle it and learn from it y ya. Nothing more your doing your absolute best and you love your babies so anything you do is always for their best interest. Once our newborn is a little older and we start doing more outings let's hope I can handle it the way you did as well. I already cried twice for speaking to her firmly for hitting me and having a tantrum imagine lol

It’s the food coloring it makes the chocolate hard. Next time once you make the cake balls dip the stick in chocolate and put it in the cake and put it in the freezer together. This way it will hold.

Podcast suggestions! Beloved and Blessed by Kimberly Hahn is a great Catholic woman/mother/wife podcast. I find I really like to focus in on hers because it's super meaningful and good stuff, as opposed to just having it on in the background. So good for car rides if you don't have other distractions. Homemaking Foundations - Not Catholic, but seems more non-denominational view on being a wife and mother. Her podcast has been around for about 5 years now so there is a TON of content and I like to have it on as more background and will tune in to really focus when something catches my attention. But a good balance of daily life grind advise for being a mom of littles (she had two sets of twin boys in two years, so she gets it!) along with staying God focused and growing in your faith.

I’m a cashier and I understand when kids get bored at the grocery store and they want to leave or they can’t pay because their parents bought alcohol and I always ask the parents if I can help and I only really ask if I can tell they are about to lose their mind and I make the grocery’s a game or there’s a computer behind me and I let them guess how much the grocery’s are going to cost I always make the grocery game a matching game I ask them to look for all the stuff that goes in the fridge first and then pantry and then cleaning and usually that helps them me and the parents and the customers behind them

Hey Kayla, you should check out Sydney Cummings on KZbin for at home workouts. ☺️ I think when you add food coloring to the melted chocolate it needs to be oil based.

Double boiler (water in a pot on the bottom) is the only way to melt chocolate. Every other way you burn it.

So I don't like exercising either, and have no time for gym! (I work full time, have a side business, and a 15-month old.) I really like Zumba, but obviously with COVID and baby, it doesn't make sense for me. Even looking for different videos is annoying. SO, I tried jump ropes. Bingo. You can jump rope for like 10 minutes, and it'll get you huffing and puffing. You can do it in your living room 😂 and don't have to go anywhere!!

It’s not your fault melting wafers don’t work well. Use the Ghirardelli “melting chocolate” not the chocolate chips. You can get better deals at Sam’s for them. I do a lot of dipped chocolate stuff and have tried a lot but they all suck.

Maybe Riley needs to be in preschool, get her out more an get energy out with others her age. That’s what we’re struggling with our 3 year old, hopefully we’ll be able to get him in august 2022/2023. Gets them to be with others an that experience.
