What wonderful opportunities you have available to explore your creative talents. I used to love wildlife photography and still have my 500mm telephoto, but the amount of effort here in the UK far outweighs the return I feel. Birds and animals are far less abundant through over farming and over population and is why many UK wildlife photographers travel so widely. I think given the need to reduce the amount of travel we do for the sake of nature will mean controversial times ahead for UK wildlife photographers.
@GudmannAndGyda3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Simon. We probably live in controversial times but the opportunities in photography are still out there. As you show in some of your videos it´s often a matter of looking for subjects in strange places, sometimes in our backyards - especially when travel is restricted.

Þakka þér fyrir falleg myndbönd. Seeing Einar walking to the pond I realized I know this place. My family and I lived near Grund for some months, 20 years ago, and we went to watch the sun from Grimsey, during the summer solstice. I hope it hasn't got too busy. It was a great quiet place to watch Puffins and other birds. Perhaps I should mention the ferry ride can be a little rough to scare some people away. I came to the video looking for technical advice, but the tone and pace of the video were so pleasant I forgot to pay attention to the details : ) I've watched several other videos to look for other familiar places and enjoy the atmosphere, and get some good advice too. I'm feeling inspired to work hard to capture and elevate the beauty around my home. Bestu kveðjur frá Kanada

The best time depends on the weather and going in June or July. It is fine to go in May, but then the weather can be snow or sun, you never know. The birds are active all the time, but it becomes more tolerable for you as a photographer to stay outside in June or July.

Great shots folks! The mirror affect with ripples is truly inspiring! How many shots do you need to take to get those ones? A lot I bet! Thanks so much for sharing! I do love the island, and Puffins have to be the most fun looking birds, I've loved them since I read a book by Enid Blyton when I was a child. Thanks for the memory! I thought your shots of the Iceland volcano were awesome as well! I hope that you go back and get some more. :) Love and hugs from Dawn Lynn and Larry in Ottawa Canada!

Hello. This was a wonderful video. It seemed like a very enjoyable and relaxing day. I loved watching the tern feeding its young. That was amazing! All your shots were great, but the long exposure ICM was really cool I hope to be able to start attempting that myself one day. @GudmannAndGyda3 жыл бұрын
A ferry goes between Dalvík and Grimsey 5 times a week and also scheduled flights. You will find everything about it in our book Photographing Iceland - A Photo Guide to 100 locations. The best time or bird photography is probably middle of May to end of July. The puffins arrive early April and leave early August.

Great setup, I use fluid head on the tripod as well. Way more stable than the gimbal head.
@GudmannAndGyda3 жыл бұрын
We also use gimbals for very fast action, but overall, the fluid heads offer better performance. Recording video on a gimbal is also difficult.

So glad I’ve found your channel. Obsessed with Iceland for years, still never been, yet. I’ve the D850 too, but just got the 200-500f5.6 for birds etc. If I win the lottery I’d have the 500f4, or do you you think the 300f2.8 with tc is a good alternative?
@GudmannAndGyda3 жыл бұрын
These are all good lenses. We have used the 500 f4 and the 300 f2.8 for many years and most of the time it´s impossible to see a difference in image quality. The only difference is versatility. The 300 can be flexible, with and without the TC´s and the 500 is usable with a 1.7 TC, offering extra 150 mm over the 300mm lens. Most of the time it´s not practical, but it depends on the size of the subject (bird). Today - the 200-500 would be a very good option if you take a lot of videos. It offers more flexibility in photographing and taking videos of wildlife with it´s surroundings. So... it probably comes down to your style of shooting. Today the 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Lens would be a great option.

Are there predatory bird species "working" this island, as well? I have seen, in other places, where Skua and gulls do a lot of predating of eggs and chicks, but wondered if there are raptor species here, as well? Not such a "pretty" photographic subject, but seems to be part of the circle.. Thanks for such a lovely, informative, and calming video. BTW, I made a small "gunsight" of wire for my 600 mm lens, mounted to the flash bracket, which you can use with open eyes...it needs a bit of parallax adjustment for quite close objects, but is great for active birds and animals.
@GudmannAndGyda3 жыл бұрын
There are only few gulls and skuas in Grimsey. They cause panic once in a while, but they are not a big problem for the Arctic Terns.

@GudmannAndGyda3 жыл бұрын
No, the Arctic terns make nests all over the island where the ground is rather flat, most of the time in grass.
