Welcome back! I've seen those swirls in my colonies, but haven't ever figured out what they are. What's bad about them?

​@@SteveTAGamerI had a game when playing as the New Ark where there was I think two research sites and a deep rare metal deposit in the swirls, so I set up my first colony there and trying to keep it pristine (I imagine the New Ark would see these as sacred in some way). Furthermore, I did the St. Elmo's Fire mystery which had some of the sinkholes come out of the swirls, which only added to it.
