Info about Leela Zero:
en.wikipedia.o...
...
Leela Zero is a free and open-source computer Go software released on 25 October 2017. It is developed by Belgian programmer Gian-Carlo Pascutto,[1][2][3] the author of chess engine Sjeng and Go engine Leela.[4][5]
Leela Zero's algorithm is based on DeepMind's 2017 paper about AlphaGo Zero.[3][6] Unlike the original Leela, which has a lot of human knowledge and heuristics programmed into it, Leela Zero only knows the basic rules and nothing more.[7]
Leela Zero is trained by a distributed effort, which is coordinated at the Leela Zero website. Members of the community provide computing resources by running the client, which generates self-play games and submits them to the server. The self-play games are used to train newer networks. Generally, over 500 clients have connected to the server to contribute resources.[7] The community has provided high quality code contributions as well.[7]
Leela Zero finished third at the BerryGenomics Cup World AI Go Tournament in Fuzhou, Fujian, China on 28 April 2018.[8]
Info about Alphazero:
en.wikipedia.o...
AlphaZero is a computer program developed by the Alphabet-owned AI research company DeepMind, which uses an approach similar to AlphaGo Zero's to master not just Go, but also chess and shogi. On December 5, 2017 the DeepMind team released a preprint introducing AlphaZero, which, within 24 hours, achieved a superhuman level of play in these three games by defeating world-champion programs, Stockfish, elmo, and the 3-day version of AlphaGo Zero, in each case making use of custom tensor processing units (TPUs) that the Google programs were optimized to make use of.[1] AlphaZero was trained solely via "self-play" using 5,000 first-generation TPUs to generate the games and 64 second-generation TPUs to train the neural networks, all in parallel, with no access to opening books or endgame tables. After just four hours of training, DeepMind estimated AlphaZero was playing at a higher Elo rating than Stockfish; after 9 hours of training, the algorithm decisively defeated Stockfish 8 in a time-controlled 100-game tournament (28 wins, 0 losses, and 72 draws).[1][2][3] The trained algorithm played on a single machine with four TPUs.
...
Relation to AlphaGo Zero
Further information: AlphaGo Zero
AlphaZero (AZ) is a more generalized variant of the AlphaGo Zero (AGZ) algorithm, and is able to play shogi and chess as well as Go. Differences between AZ and AGZ include:[1]
AZ has hard-coded rules for setting search hyperparameters.
The neural network is now updated continually.
Go (unlike Chess) is symmetric under certain reflections and rotations; AlphaGo Zero was programmed to take advantage of these symmetries. AlphaZero is not.
Chess can end in a draw unlike Go; therefore AlphaZero can take into account the possibility of a drawn game.
AlphaZero vs. Stockfish and elmo

Komodo seems to have undergone vast improvements - everytime I’ve seen it play before, it’s lost. Ingenious play: by both sides, I have to add, because I like Stockfish’s counterattacking style - as opposed to most machines when in trouble. Most of the latter simply make defeatist, feeble defensive moves, and even an amateur can sense they’re going to get squeezed and crushed.

Awesome analysis! Watching from North Miami Florida originally from Bogotá. Question. Is Alpha Zero making a comeback & how would it rate vs todays great Stockfish?
@quag443
@quag443 4 жыл бұрын
In the AlphaZero roundtable (around the 43 minute mark) the DeepMind crew said it would probably lose to the latest Stockfish & Leela and acknowledged it was not for competitive sparring matches - so probably no comeback. Latest Stockfish should be close to 200 elo points higher in blitz.

BTW, KC, I know it probably doesn't seem very related to chess at first glance (or maybe even second glance), but do you have any thoughts on the newest breakthrough in machine learning, known as GPT3? Myself, I've avoided reading up on it simply because I know it would lead me down a time-consuming rabbit-hole of avid reading and researching, and I don't quite have the time for it right now. Just wondering what your first impressions might be. Cheers!

After Bf3 forcing queen to move , I guess Qxf3?! gxf3 and h3?! and black giving birth to a new queen seems unstoppable so this variation also needs to be checked if I am missing any quick refutation by white here

amazing game.in the opening, komodo consider 9. 0-0-0 = 0.89 and stockfish consider 9 ... Nfd7 = 1.43, we will see the next game with the same opening reversed. thanks for your analysis

Rh3 to g3 led to Stockfish being unable to castle king side which led to a fatal disconnect of black pieces in the middle game. Incredible game.

Stockfish up to this point was undefeated, a streak of 46 games with no defeat in this tourney. Then Komodo broke the streak. Furthermore, Stockfish & Komodo drew the reverse-color game to this one, so it was a "genuine" defeat. Nevertheless Stockfish remains the tournament leader with a monster score of (at present) 13 wins & 1 loss. Stockfish's "NNUE" neural net was billed as giving it over 100 extra Elo points. I do not know if that is true, but it certainly is looking pretty damn strong and this is its only loss so far. I really don't feel I understand this game, despite KC's explanation, but I might speculate that in this particular game stockfish's NNUE actually hurt it. Maybe the whole combination was all about winning material. Komodo's non-neural net evaluator is faster than Stockfish's neural net and understands material perfectly. Also there was some pretty unlikely-looking stuff that made combination work for Komodo. Stockfish's neural net may have decided "that's unlikely, so I'm not investigating that line" while meanwhile Komodo investigated, found out it worked to win material, hence found the win Stockfish overlooked. In other words, being wise due to neural net knowledge that stuff is "unlikely" may pay off on average, but in games where the unlikely-to-work stuff actually *does* work, that "wisdom" actually hurts you!

Sorry, I was wrong: Stockfish did win the return game vs Komodo. Actually in a pretty similar sacrifical way, only a good deal cleaner and less complicated the way Stockfish did it. TCEC's "H2H" option will tell you that stuff accurately.

12:35 Always play knight a4 whenever possible!! That's what I learned here. Watchout. EZ game chess. Just look at all the moves and choose the best one. Try to checkmate the Queen if possible. Always a good thing. deep. That's just like this 1 time I went to a Trump rally and learned a thing or 2 about wisdom.
