The discussion started by Sekisensei, then continued by Matt, Skalla, and now LLA is delightful. Wholesome af. "Game recognize game" kind of thing :)

OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS NEW TREND SO MUCH First Seki-sensei looks like a giddy child on Christmas as he explores a new weapon, now everybody in the HEMA community is responding so wholesomely and respectfully! I can't wait for Seki-sensei to respond to all these videos. Good riddance to the days of toxic "debates" over whether the longsword or katana is better. More of this!

Thanks for braving the cold to give us this lesson. To us non-fencers the dynamic use of grip on the longsword is sometimes overlooked I think. Perhaps moreso even than on asymmetric blades. Great addition to the conversation!

This very thing about edge aligment is what I have been commenting in both the original Seki sensei video and in Matt Easton response, just that you have done far better than I ever could. Longswords truly shines when playing with the binds, changing the indexation of the blade and back edge cuts.

A swords is a sword, and armour is armour. A armoured Samurai is squaring to another armoured fighter, and 90% of there kit is the same as the others. The shocking thing is that both the late Sengoku period and the later the Dutch Revolt are reading the same play book, there both concurrent modern wars useing the same technology. An educated man in both country's would proudly show you his globe an point out there other. Trade links made the katana in a painting by a Dutch master all but an essential items for the 17ths century noble man wishing to show his trading net work. Rembrandt's The Blinding of Samson has a Kris for and centre.

I love how the whole hema community is responding to seki-sensei! Just one thing though, the guy's name is Shogo, 'o' at the end, you seem to have a typo in there.

several years ago i visited cortona, a city in italy, and at the second floor of the museo dell'accademia et-rusca there was a perfectly finished rapier 1,5 m long, forged in layers, as damascus steel, katanas and jians are forged, and that weapon had a concave equlateral triangular shape in cross section, with three sharp cutting edges. the sword is probably stil exhibited there, one floor over the gino severini exhibition.

One of the things that surprised me about Seki Sensei's video is that he never mentioned that the longsword is double-edged. Perhaps because their mock-sword wasn't metal so it wasn't easily noticeable? Or maybe he just didn't have the experience to think of how to use the reverse-edge? The reverse-bladed katana video that he put out clearly had him thinking about ways to strike with the back of a katana, but it doesn't seem like it occurred to him with the longsword.

reverse edge cuts are simply too weak to register a good cut with. They're only useful to trigger modern hema rules of first blood

@@ZETA14.88absolutely incorrect - they’re referenced multiple times as effective blows across a wide variety of sources & time periods. No idea where you got the idea they’re only used in HEMA as a points thing?

I really hope this doesn't come off badly, as I'm only saying this to maybe be helpful and bring awareness, but, are you aware that, just with what's in this video, you've effectively doxxed yourself? I feel like I shouldn't say that, but at the same time, you might not realise and wish you had
